Weather/Ice for Saturday

Was curious if anyone would be willing to fill me in on the current "conditions" of the streams.  Namely Walnut and Elk mainly the mouth area of both creeks.  Looking to head up tomorrow despite the foreasted snow possibility.  My main concern is the amount of Ice on the creeks near the mouths and possibly the basin at walnut, I'll have a "new" person with me and don't want to make the 2.5hr trip up if the conditions are very unfavorable.  I know it's to be cold/snowy but meh that doesn't bother myself or my girlfriend and friend, it's the floating ice and how much "open" water there is at the mouths.

Thanks

If I were fishing tomorrow I would want to be fishing faster water in a creek gorge, not in the open with slow water that freezes with no wind barriers. The temps won't get above 28, and probably more like in the teens with the windshield.
There is already some ice forming on elk and walnut, so my guess is that it's going to spread by tomorrow.
I'm sure a local will chime in. But I hope your girlfriend and new steelheader friend are ready for some intense conditions!
The fish will sometimes hold right under those ice ledges, so drifting close to the edges works for hooking em. Landin em is another matter!

Both mouths are open but in have a thin layer of slush on them if the water is slow then its got a top on it. Basin has a ice but not thick enough to stand on yet imo. Best bet is to do what fisher376 advised find an area that is protected by the wind with some degree of moving water

Looking kinda bleak right about now my buddy backed out due to fear of the conditions which I don't truly 100% blame him and I'm sure that my girlfriend will follow his and I'll be totally fine with it.  I'm hoping to get up there after the first of the year then and have some more fun.  I want to get the new GoPro some action!  lol  Who know's maybe I'll wake up and still end up taking the 2.5hr ride and just enjoy the snow and maybe bare the weather to fish the channel/bay.

it is thick enough at the moment to fish on but Thurs thru Sunday will be pushing low 40s. Would be sketchy to me. Better fishing the creeks if they don't blow out with rain/melt off mix.

latest weather I saw:
Friday - 40 with showers
Saturday - 40 with showers
Sunday - 52 with rain......

good luck, any Ice most likely wont be safe and the rain with over a foot of snow melting will certainly have the creeks blown out.

It is almost a guaranteed blowout. But I'm coming up Friday anyway. Maybe I'll catch one, or maybe just a cold. But between work and having 4 kids, I need to get ahhhttaa da hahhs!
Maniliketofish-you are the epitome of all that is bad about a discussion board. You've probably changed screen names 3 times because u get kicked off. But u come back because u can't control yourself. And this post is a week old, so there really wasn't a need for anyone to give the guy further advice on a trip that was planned for last week. But again, u just couldn't resist! Sorry that not everyone is as brilliant and independent as you are.
Yes, of course learning to read gauges is advised. One shouldn't expect to be spoon fed forever. But as you surely know, iced over streams can throw the gauges off big time. Accurate readings are sometimes hard to come by this time of year with ice flows. Absolutely nothing wrong with asking folks who see the streams everyday what it's like.
So...is it worth the trip yinz? ;)

No point in trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

fisherofmen376- no, tinker bell. Same screen name as always - nice try. As yes, I too am sorry everyone isn't as smart and brilliant and independent as me - because if they were, they wouldn't ask such moronic questions as,  "Is it worth coming up?" or  "What are stream conditions like?"

And as I said, conditions change HOURLY so any advice that isn't given an  hour before you are to be there is worthless. Sorry to burst your bubble.

People have to understand Erie is a crap shoot - I've been fishing there for 42 years.  Some days are gonna stink and other will be great. YOU NEED TO PUT YOUR TIME IN. Now, put down the juice box, turn off SpongeBob and get out there.

It's amazing that you're at least 42 years of age and still act like punk A$ $. Fisherofmen376 is absolutely correct " you are the epitome of all that is bad about a discussion board"

Hey Mags, keep asking. I am at, on, or over the creeks every day. With the ice, the gauge may be off on its reading.  A lot of things affect the the conditions, not just snow melt but rate of melt. Not just rainfall, but location of rainfall, etc. Ice coming down the creek can make a jam pretty quick too. So, if you have a question ask.

I'm going up on Sunday. Hoping for the best.... Curious how the clarity looks on the streams. I suspect Sunday will be high risk high reward. If the rivers clear and levels are on their way down, perfect. If they keep rising and dark as chocolate...
