SMOLTS
What do you think the impact would be,if any ,if the creeks, say elk,walnut,16,20-you name it or maybe the lower part of the creek, were closed for fishing from when the smolts were stocked till end of april,

Have read several times - can't remember exactly where or else I'd provide links - that basically the smolts "tell" them when it's time to be stocked. Size and age are the determining factors, not when it's convenient for fishermen. shmoe some how i seem to catch smolts year round
There is some natural reproduction on the Erie tribs. Not much. There is at least one hole on one trib that I fish that has smolts year in and year out every fall. Not a lot, but some.

When I am fishing a hole in a said stream, If I am catching many smolts. Then I move on to a different spot or at least change my drift pattern to at least slow down the amount of smolt that I am hooking. When I do catch them, I am as careful as possible when dehooking and carefull in the release. Try to harm as little as possible. They are the beginning of our great fishery.
It's your fish story,so tell it any way you want!!!

OH ya, Also don't set the hook as hard this time of year. There is no need for it.

If you find you can't avoid smolts by moving, debarbing your hooks is a good idea. I also try to never even remove them from the water, or even grab the fish.. Just grab the the leader close to the fishes mouth and pop the hook out with hemos.

It is a Domino effect - Linesville Hatchery hatches and raises the SH fry - but come March they have to get geared up for walleye production. Fairview & Tionesta hatcheries has to make room for the SH fry - So they have to stock the smolts - ready or not. So it is pretty hectic for a couple of weeks getting the smolts out and re arranging the raceways for the Steel head fry that are commin from Linesville and Tionesta. The ice conditions on Lake Pymie dictate when the whole process gets started! Early ice-out, then the earlier the smolts get stocked by Fairview and Tionesta.

Use big barbs, set the hook like you're starting a chainsaw, and if it's a smolt, catch it in mid air.
