11/9/13

Took a drive because everything looked good.   Stopped at 2 different places.   I was amazed to see a few kings splashing around and fished behind them.   The water as great.  I had the whole stretch below the parking area to myself.  Hooked into something and it turned out to be a male king.   I worked that whole stretch 4 times with several different flies with no steel.    Hit another spot and again the water was good, but no takers.  At this place I saw several fish hooked and brought in (and taken out on a rope), but again nothing for me.   I should have picked this one because on my way there I saw fish being put in coolers at several parking areas from low to high.   Well better luck next time.

If I  fair hooked a king I'd be happy. Sounds like you had some drifts in front of trout, just not in the cards, today. Like you said, next time.
I spent the day building stuff  in a milking parlor so I still smell of eau de
bovine. If I went fishing, probably would  have skunk adding to the fragrance. The farmer told me how yesterday some local  nimrod he gave hunting permission to, glanced a broadhead off one of his beefers. Is it just me, or is it beyond stupid to let loose with cows behind your shot? He was told to drag his azz and never be seen again.  Considering I have permission to hunt hundreds of   acres of prime  deer habitat just down the road, and am even  strongly  encouraged to do so, I wonder why I spend this time of year agonizing over driving hours  to fish. I'm sure your animals have more considerate and smarter people hunting  around them, Clint.  In my friends defense- he's too nice a guy to turn down polite requests.    Thanks for the report. I hope you get to go up and get a shot at the lowered water.

The good honest report. Thanks Clint
Coolers are the demise of steel but at least 1 limit has helped. IMO. Been many , many years but I think I'm ready myself to put 1 in the cooler for some surf and tenderloins next week at deer camp.

We slow smoked the lake salmon we caught in the fall at deer camp and gotta say, it was good..
What's wrong with me killing such fish ,, lol

Charlie the fish was hooked in the mouth and not on the uptake .     The thing was pretty beat up.   It fought like an old boot.  Hook or crook I do not know,  I am skeptical because of how beat up it was.  It was not spawned out though.    Will they still hit when they are at or close to Zombie land

Noting like the good clean smell of eau de bovine.   It is actually one of the smells that bring me back to childhood.  Dad coming home smelling like the barn

Rich I was thinking of keeping one too.   Had the chance last time , but did not feel like carrying it out.

    Very nice Clint.
I spent the last couple of days in the woods in Otsego County, nada.  It snowed most of the day yesterday dropping a couple of inches if not more.  The snow coupled with the biting wind made for a chilly day afield.  The rut is in full swing but no paramours in the area I hunted.  Did see a flock of thirteen turkey this morning but nothing close enough to bring to the table.  I'll bow hunt the rest of this week and then the smoke pole comes out next Saturday.  Its venison or tag soup, hopefully not the latter.

2 nice reports from my game lands. Nice to hear a " couple " inches in Otsego co. Gotta believe my camp neighbors dusting is our couple inches. I'm on the top of the world out there, always looking down. Can't wait till Friday for a walkin in the woods and the weekend drags out.

I'm also pretty stoked that the up op coming days off will allow for a walk in the water as well. Hope a few at that.
Keeping a steelhead for me would have to be all about time and place. A nice chromer about 6 -10 lbs would be sweet this thurs for the grill sat night with tenderloins. The week after maybe not so much. Time and place.

The zombie kings. Yup , dragging a log is a good description. I refer to walleye kinda the same but they do taste better. Do they hit , bite. Yea they do , I think.. Mostly outta repetition IMO. They just zombie out on anything that floats by, get caught and do it again. Do thy strike? Ah not so much. Are they eAsy to hook or foul ? Yup, intentional or not. It's always nice to roll past them hoping for chrome .

Maybe I will see some of you cats in the near future on the water , if not .. Ice is nice :)

    Clint,

It was my experience that the males and hens both hit great when they were fresh, then turned off pretty much for a while, and that as the males got longer into the spawning process, they started to get aggressive again, and could be a real PITA when you were looking to catch steel.  Should be very interesting up there for the next couple of days with this big drop in discharge.  And next weekend a lot of the river should be empty with Southern Tier gun opening up.

    Thanks for the report.
