It is a great idea. I've met some people that took their kids there. There's a similar piece of water coming into the Cumberland River in Kentucky. Oddly, in the conservative south, there seems to be many more handicap fishing platforms and places where kids fish without adult competition. I can think of a number of well known small trout rivers in Tenn. and N.C. that have them and prohibit adults and the non-handicapped. They are stocked with some nice trout a few times a year Kind of blows up the theory that conservatives in the south are callous and selfish. Greedy humans come in all forms. I've thought about where one might go besides the estuary ramp on the SR, or if a kids area would be good. Due to the variability of season, and more importantly, water level; it would be difficult. In my experience, if someone is fishing with a kid, they get extra room and help if needed. Andy could speak to that, I just know what has happened around me. I know when I fished the Paradise Pool in the middle of Oct. , there was a kid with his Dad that hooked up a few times and everyone reeled up and watched, even me that was WAY below the action. If that fish had run down and crossed me, I would have felt like an idiot. If there was anything I could have done to help, I would have done it. Even snaggers and litter chuckers will help kids. We don't want them to be the example to follow, though!!!!!!!!!

For the most part you're absolutely right fichy. But my opinion is semi biased as I look for areas that are wider open with my kids and hesitate from taking the rod out of the truck in busy season. In peak season we fished dsr twice with my son and it was usually for an hour or so good. Had one guy jump in our spot while fighting a fish. He left before we even came back from fighting it from my snarlish growl I gave him from about 30 yards up stream. The new wall in town is great for kids. Had my son and daughter out on Sunday there. They both took turns floating a bobber. Everyone fishing stayed away. One guy accidentally casted over my sons line and immediately apologized and walked upstream... so yes, for the most part everyone on the river is great to kids. But a kids/handicapped zone would be a great thing for the river.

Handicapped areas came up here a couple of years ago. We kicked around our preferences and some kinda settled in on Unemployment as a nice place for one- right next to a parking lot with decent fish numbers most all the time. There are also mostly enough fishermen there that someone with a net may well be willing to help out from time to time when needed.( happens there regularly now from what I have seen) We also discussed the boat landing by the A bridge down river. Took the liberty at that time to call the State about the possibility and got a polite no. As I recall when reporting back on the forum the excuse was they preferred mostly ponds as opposed to moving waters for such places. Kinda understand their position although don't wholly agree with it. Those needing a special place dont always come alone and the 'moving waters' concept does not always apply IMHO. Think exclusive kid zones may follow suite with the handicapped although there is no special 'cost' involved- that may be a positive in a nice idea. Of course the P to P places or any privatly owned bank with no State fishing lease could do it in a small area as a public service quite easily - don't hold your breath.

Agree -often felt like the Pied Piper on the lake across the street in Winter. Neighborhood kids sometimes came out to 'help' lol. Feel a bit like a spoil sport but that place posted with the kids fishing appears to be a dreaded Pay to Play for kids. Too much of THAT on the Sr already. Just an occasional 'kids only' on a pool here and there or even a nice portion of some larger pools would be quite nice.

personally I don't see the benefit of a kids only area on the Ontario tribs.. for the most part of what I've experienced it's a "mans" game, no disrespect to women & children, just a term.. I don't think enough parents would take their children to make a designated area beneficial.. While I see a few do, they are few and far between.. Even if such are was there I still think very, very few folks traveling to fish there would bring their kids along on a trip just to fish the kiddie pool..

While not really thinking a section of the river would be good , overall I just thought is was a great idea. They could almost do a kids only area above the LFZ for a stretch. Never really walked up there, but I am sure there is good water.

Having just come back from 2 days of 1500+ runoff, the Salmon River in anything but low flows is no place for kids. Actually had this discussion with Metal Slayer today, and he posited that in such dangerous flow conditions, you would have to keep your eyes and be close to the kid the whole time, so you really can't fish. And one short lapse, and you could be into tragedy. I'm with HT' this is basically an adult game, you start them on this fishing on low water if you live around there, and as older teens if you're traveling. And I really don't see any need for special areas on these waters for kids. If you want a handicap platform, go for it, we've got one on Irondequoit Creek in one of the prime holes, and I don't ever think I've seen a handicapped person fish from it. Just don't start trying to impose $100 fines when everyone else is on it so it isn't totally wasted. L13

Seen wheelchairs on it and MOST of the time people showed some respect. A couple other times guys crowded them or pushed in front of the platform destroying any chance the challenged fisher had. Very little benifit in the end.

have to disagree with the old teens standard. In season 91 / 92 I was 11 years old and my father probaBly brought me up at least 25 times. All the way into April. He even managed to cross my brother and I in easier areas of the dsr up to 1 gate. Now granted my brother and I were skilled trout fishers by the ages seven or eight and already TyIng our own flies For some time. We knew all of our own knots and entanglements were a thing of the past at that point. so lucky I can see what you are saying somewhat as you do not want to bring a completely green young fisherman to this river without any prior River experience. it also comes down to how much experience the parent figure haS as well.
