KPD-STILL GREAT
I'm always interested in anything remotely connected with Keystone Power Dam. I've been going there for over 20 yrs. Through yrs. of trial and error I've unlocked a few secrets. It is a little silly to imagine that there isn't an abundance of fish in this lake. The yrs. when the fishing was so much better are still here. The tactics on this lake seem to change weekly. These fish adapt, change, and GROW!!! Why would the panfish population ever suffer from the predators given the astounding amount of rainbow smelt and emerald shiners(yes, emerald shiners) stocked for yrs. for forage? Add to that the buffet of winter trout that are thrown in occasionally by the fc for musky fodder and these fish don't need to search for food, they are surrrounded by it. If you doubt this, pull up on the "island" at night, drop a crappie light overboard, wait for a few baitfish to show, then turn it off and listen. The surface will ripple with the school all around you. My apologies for being wordy. This lake is my passion.

i'm glad to hear that someone is having some success - I gave up on the lake about 5 years ago after numerous skunk jobs. what species are you having success with? the bass density is pretty good but everything else has seems to have disappeared according to my experience. would love to hear that you're catching some jumbo perch and slab crappies. any luck with walleye? "Why would the panfish population ever suffer from the predators given the astounding amount of rainbow smelt and emerald shiners"the largest impact on panfish is the huge level fluctuations that can totally devastate a year's spawning. and, when the level gets so low that there are no weeds in the lake, all panfish become exposed to predators. and, the baitfish you mention are deep dwellers and are not readily available to the bass population (the number one predator in the lake) during the summer months so the bass (and the amish) nail the gills, perch and crappie in the shallower warmer water. phish

Thanks phish! I hadn't thought about the level fluctuation. Good point. Bass are familiar with the emeralds, I think. I catch alot around the stumps and deep trees with a small olive X-rap. Thanks for the fix topdog. You seem like a great guy.

I'm a bit confused being from the west side of the Burgh ...... looking at the map, are you talking about Keystone Lake (west of Kittaning) or Keystone State Park (by New Alexandria)? Thanks in advance.

It would be east of Kittaning near Atwood PA. Keystone Power Dam is a completely different lake then Keystone State Park in New Alex

please report back if "the perch begin in November" - and please report back any slab crappie sightings. I may have to head back to keystone next year - it will be 6 years since I've hit that lake - hopefully things have are improving. that's a very nice walleye - have you got any smaller ones? that is what I've found changed the most concerning walleye in keystone. you'll only catch one infrequently but it's usually large. years ago I would go thru 100 nightcrawlers a day catching walleye shorts and a few legals - especially between the sunken island and the opposite shore in around 15 ft of water. there's been none to be had there for many many years - at least for me. this all seems to have occurred a number of years after the "big bass" designation came into effect in 1991. nice size bass like the one in your photo are definitely available - but I think the perch, crappie and walleye have suffered because of it (and maybe also due to some major harvesting by the constant barrage of amish fishermen). there is apparently no natural walleye reproduction and walleye fry and fingerlings are stocked - which I think just become bass fodder. phish

Thanks BlueLagoon Can you give me a suggestion as to where to shore fish for crappie (no boat) that's easy access (at Keystone Power Dam)? I quit bushwacking a few years ago. An afterthought .... Can't the people that name these lakes be a bit more creative? Two lakes with the same name in the same area of the state? Take Pymatuning. Now that's a name. Forgot what the Indian translation is.

Tough shore access, but research the old KPD threads in the upper right hand corner. There should be some spots people have mentioned before. I wish I could help I've only fished the lake a half dozen times from a boat and most times I was trolling for walleye or hitting shorelines for bass. I'd like to try for crappie and perch at some point this fall.

you can shore fish from various places along rt 210 - you'll see various pull offs along the road - and also near the boat launches. along the 210 side the water gets deep fast so look for deadfalls and fish along side of them. HOWEVER - without a boat/canoe you are seriously restricted. the best spots are middle of the lake weedlines. the lake was named for/by the keystone mine-mouth coal power station that built it and uses the water for the cooling towers. phish
