Kooser Lake Pike

I have never been to Kooser Lake but I've been reading some old posts about it being a decent place to catch pike.  I work somewhat close to there and I'm thinking about checking it out.  Do you need a trout stamp to fish there?  Also, any tips on good possible locations would be awesome.  Thanks.

I caught my very first pike there the 2nd week after trout opener about 6/7 years ago, but as of late the past few times I stopped I don't even see any swimming around like I use to.  And I would say you don't need a trout stamp to fish the LAKE only but there's always a chance to catch trout so I'd say it's a smart idea to have a trout stamp.   But, I really don't know how the population of pike in the lake is anymore.  It's kinda like the population of Tiger Musky in Donegal.  I've seen 1 dead carcass in the past 6/7 years at Donegal but never any recent photos.

Thanks for the reply.  I'm going to stop out there for a bit this afternoon.  We'll see how it goes.

I saw one about 12" there almost 2 years ago. Chased a spinner I was throwing for trout. I only ever fished there the one time though, that's all I got.

I caught two there this past spring on trout magnets. Both small hammer handles, but pike nonetheless

I believe it's a stocked lake, so yes, you'd need the stamp.

Cold is correct. It is a stocked lake. I used to catch pike after crossing the dam and fishing along the stretch of water on the peninsula facing towards Route 31. I never saw them in the backwater area of the peninsula.

Forgot to clarify, the pike were hammer handles, but still a load of fun as they offered diversity. It's funny how people there will say " I never knew they were in here".

Back when i used to fish for trout i fished kooser pretty often. I remember there were about 2 or 3 years where i would ocassionally catch a pike while fishing for trout with fatheads. No big ones, all averaging around 12". I had heard they removed all the pike since then but i guess thats not true. I say leave em in there and let em grow. Id rather catch pike over trout anyday.

I caught a 24" back in 05 the 2nd week after trout opened.  I haven't seen anything but a carp here or there and few tiny sunfish etc and some trout.  I have herd that there was an issue with a high nitrogen content in the water or something to that affect which is one of the reasons for the really bad snot, so that may be a reason the pike were removed.  But as I said I always herd there were some nice ones in there as there were nice musky in Donegal but have never seen a recent picture of a musky from Donegal...

Well I guess you guys are luckier than I am. I have caught my share of trout out of there. I caught a very small bluegill a couple years back. Never seen anything else.

If you want to catch pike, go up the road to Laurel Hill Lake.

I was just there today and saw the same pike twice in the shallows. Both times it spooked out to deeper water. It came back after the first time, but not the second. It was about 30 inches.

I've heard this before, and fished LH lake many many times...never once caught, or seen someone else catch...or even saw, for that matter...a pike.

Not saying they're not in there...but it's by no means a common catch.

I saw a 36" pike caught just above the iron bridge above the boy scout camp and hear about them all the time below the dam. There used to be a bait shop on Trent Road that had all kinds of pictures on the wall of pike caught in the creek.

I imagine they'd have a field day on freshly stocked pelletheads in the spring and fall.  Maybe I'll have to start targetting them a bit more when fishing at LH, creek or lake.

Was at Kooser a few days ago trout fishing and caught one healthy 22" pike and spotted several others.  I'm guessing a few of them were close to 30".
