trolling for eyes/ line weight

hey guys, I'm new to this. I went out trolling for eyes for the first time. was great.
I'm gonna get set up good for next year. What line weight is recommended to use on some line counting trolling rods?
 Thanks in advance

15-20lb braid on the dipsy rods... zero stretch allows for your dipsys to trip more easily. For the lead-core, go with 50 foot of 12-20lb flouro as your leader.  I would rig most rods with 5 color (save money) and if you hear of 7 and 10 color being best, just add 3-4 ounce weights where your lead meets your backing.  For lead-core backing, use braid! Braid is much easier to cut through your rubber bands attached to your clips... Especially if you plan on running 4-5 rods per board and have your lines way* out there. And for rigger rods, shouldn't matter.... 12-20lb flouro or mono should work.  Hope this helps! Every person has there own preferences, but this is what I would use.

30 pound Power Pro and 15-20# fluorocarbon leader for dipsy rods. Lead core rods off boards have been the ticket the last couple of years. Rigger rods, mono with a fluorocarbon leader.

Curiosity killed the cat, but for awhile I was a suspect.

    thanks for the help.
What do you mean when you talk about 5 color and/or 7 and 10 color?
when I went out I just used my catfish rods with 4 oz. banana shaped sinkers with 8 foot of leader with some diving plugs. This worked out ok but I would like to get better prepared for next year. I have been going out a lot for perch. Now I would like to learn much more about the walleyes. THANKS

The 5-color, 7-color, and 10 color are referring to lead core line.  A full spool of leadcore line comes pre-rigged in  300ft spools.  This 300 feet of leadcore line is color coded and marked in 30ft increments; Therefore a full core (300ft)  = 10 colors.  Each color represents 30 feet (10yds) of line.

Guys will commonly take a full core (10 colors) and spilt it into half-giving you 5 colors a piece.  Some will divide it up further or piece it together so they have 6 colors, 7 colors, etc...

A rough rule of thumb is that each color (30ft) will give you approximately 5ft of added depth.  Therefore when guys run a 5-color setup they will gain 25 ft of depth, plus any additional depth from the lure...

Leadcore is the new 'It' thing.  Guys caught plenty of fish other ways until the new thing in PA became leadcore.  Yes it does catch fish, but you go a few miles into ohio and guys are hammering fish just as good on steel line, tru trips, and inline weights.  Its all about getting your bait in the zone.

Big game in 14lb is a good cheap go to mono for trolling.  This year I tried a line called Sunline.  It is the diameter of 10lb so it will match up with all of the dive curves made with 10lb line, but it has a 16lb break strength.  The thinner diameter is more prone to break due to cuts in the line, so you need change once or twice a season.  I think blood run came out with a similar product this year.

For braid any 30lb braid will do.

The most important thing to do is calibrate all of your reels!! Go into a large field and make sure they are all calibrated +- a few feet at 200' out. If your reel is half full or too full your linecounter is useless!

leadcore can be pricey.... but if you are already spending a lot of money in gas, fishing license, lodging, boat repairs, lures, etc.... then spend a few extra bucks to really put more fish in the boat. Its super easy to fish with and catches prolly 70% of our walleye compared to dispys and riggers.

btw. I have a few dipsy and rigger rods that i'd be interested in selling.  They are all rigged with something different b/c I have been using them for musky trolling. 2 Rigger reels are TR 100-G, 2 rigger rods are 8' 2" Okuma classic pros. And I have 4 dipsy rods/reels. Reels are Okuma Magda pro 30DX, and rods are 9' shimano TDR 1903 aeroglas.
