Erie Smallmouth

Went out last weekend in Sandusky to try a different area of Erie (usually fish PA). Had a really rough time only managed 2 smallies and a sore back from the waves. Has anyone fished there for smallmouth? I'm heading back the end of September and trying to just find some general areas that normally produce that time of year.
