Word is out for sure and fishing has been good. What a great early shot we've had. Its been a while since we've had such a good august shot. As most know it can be hit or miss and there's never a guarantee but its pretty solid for sure...
What a good forum this is with the group of guys that bs here and share various fishing adventures. Finally just decided to start a new account after struggling to sign back in but have followed for the past two months periodically. Thanks to twobob for sharing some of my pics. What a great spring and summer its been... keep on keeping on!!!
Welcome back Andy! That was a great picture of you and your son on the DSC site, that'll be a great memory to share in the future. Seeing those pictures and reading the reports is really making it hard to not make a early run,but I know as soon as I get there the Salmon will all go back to the lake and shoot me the fin.So I'll use my head and wait a bit

Right now theres Fish in the river, fish in the estuary , fish in the mouth and thousands of fish around 200 ft. Out on the lake... its sure gonna be big when it comes. Tight lines boys

Well I had an unexpected day off on Mon. Had to be home by 1 but that gave me more time fishing than driving (that is my cardinal rule) so an early morning drive was in order. Got there and got first water in my second choice but first pick. Great pocket for moving fish. After about a half hoir of not seeing or feeling anything I was joined by a guy who drove up from PA for the day. Time to move. Wandered down and as I was about to cross to get to the good side I spotted 3 or for coho. They were spooky as they could be partly I think because of the ultra low water but also because of the guys in the riffle jumping up on the rocks to get a good look and then lifting away. All in all a nice day. All I got was wet feet.

Yes welcome back DB. I myself am frantically trying to get my wood cut and get stuff buttoned up for winter so I can relax. I may take a trip up this weekend or after work but I have been hearing the perch are starting to pile up soooooooo..........

Clint that could be a good idea. Drove through town today a few hours ago and saw no one fishing. Drove back through a half hour ago and saw quite a few people fishing above the bridge. 2 kids were standing at the head of the new stairs with two nice ones on a stringer.... I guess you can say its salmon season once you see that. Its definitely luck or hard work for getting them in the river this time of year. Its all in whats worth it to the individual.

Twobob, its always good to get out. Think of it this way, its only mid august and you already knocked off some of the rust.
Fichy, great to hear from you. A suicide run could be worth it but try to include early morning and evening in possible.

I look at it as mid Aug? What could you expect. I saw fish moving up so the opportunity was there I just didn't grab it. If I had a full day I woyld have gone to a spot thatt had some shadows till late morning (my first choice but the one I didn't take, It would have been below the lifters (at least the ones I saw) and maybe the fish would have been holding better. I got what I paid for and happy with it. I love the river. Should also mention that of the 20 or so fish I saw half were coho. They were the only ones that slowed down ,the kings were just blowing by, and I didn't prepare for coho fishing even if they weren't terrified. New 10ft ECHO will take some getting used to. First 4 piece rod I've ever used. Seemed a bit clunky and stiff at first, but I had a feeling with it before I left. Tuna I don't expect to go thru a box of 50 #2 hooks anytime soon.

Is there a big difference in the flies you guys use for cohos compared to kings? Is it just size or pattern also? I'm going to be in the area all next week for the first time and would like to give it a go.

Mote , I primarily fish the lower end only for salmon. I find any thing bright works well in broken water tail outs for both Chinook and coho. Red always seems to stand out for coho thinking back. The farther up river you go the more presentable your fly will have to be as they are spooked, finnicky and basically not eating at all... good luck. Others will chime in with more advice.

No Dime but with the short fighting butt I used it that way for longer casts. Yes I have some flies that seem to work for kings and some that work better for coho. Oh yes and many that don't catch anything at all.

yekes maybe its just me. My friend MS fished close to where I was on Wed and said he had about 50 chances to present to fish. Not just blowing thru but stopping and holding briefly. Hooked up with 5. Guess I have to learn this game again, again. I knew after taking a couple decades off I would have a learning curve to climb, but every year? Maybe I'd be better off waiting for rustfaces.

Bill is doing well. Been spanking walleyes in Oneida. First trip for salmon was Wed. Yep all the difference in the world. Bill said there was very little "fishing" going on when he was there also but the fish were holding for him. Suxs that the upstream lodgers eventually found this water on low water last year. Easy picking for a person with a twitchy wrist and no conscience.

Db, while I agree the presentation to a salmon can be better , I don't think the fishing is any different a few 100 yards or so. They move hold- move hold until they hit their digging destination . So it seems.
Steelhead , absolutely . It can be night or day :)
Who is bill ? A steelhead is a grateful head ?

Tuna gotta somewhat disagree... I've seen fish run a mile or so of river and hold... seen em go back down to estuary and then run again the next day. Not only cbinooks...coho too... Even have caught fish a day later with my fly in its mouth from the day before... Then there's different water types that hold fish longer. While the water above and below will produce 1's and 2's stragglers through shallower flats(unless its a donkey Kong run)... its definitely complex and all subjective to an individual who holds the rod

One more quick question guys. Is there anywhere down near the mouth that you can shore fish or wade and cast spoons or other hardware? Maybe a pier or something?

Tuna some water holds fish better than other as you know. Agood spot is a good spot but being in the right place to get the correct drift is helpful also. In the case of my trip, I was stuck on the wrong side of the river to get the best presentation but the real problem with placement was that there was a bunch of snaggers working below me stirring the fish up so they never really stopped in what is usually a place they do. They just kept moving. Had I fished below them I might have done better, but Bill (metalslayer) had told me the area had filled in during the flood and I decided to fish down river checking it out so was getting preused fish to fish to.

Sorry I had misunderstood an Email I got from MS. It seems he was fishing much lower on the river than I thought. Beechs with seasons passes definately have an advantage at this time.

I used to hear about guys smelting at the mouth, but I am unsure of public access. There is a small pier by the mouth of Grindstone Creek, access from Selkirk Shores State Park, and when they are staging it sometimes produces, also a good spot to sand spike for Chrome and Browns. Check the regs , but I think you are OK using spoons Downstream of the Route 3 bridge in Port Ontario, definitely more water opens up if you have a small boat or canoe. But plunking and casting hardware are definitely less fun than drifting eggs or flies. L13
