greenlick

Was out there throwing topwaters this evening. Lake is up to normal & a little less clear than before. Few people out & with all of the talk about frogs I decided to throw one. Got a few small bass, nothing of size. A few more people showed up at dusk, but it started to flash lightening as I left,so I would assume they will be getting wet again. Detour is still in effect.  sam

I always enjoy reading your outing reports from greenlick. I dont fish it much at all anymore but have very fond memories of fishing for carp and bass there when i was a kid.

Green lick has been really productive since the rain has the water level up. The only down side is that the fish have all been tiny. I'm not sure what happened, but I haven't gotten 1 fish over 7lb.

I've only fished there a couple times. Went there looking for carp for the first time a few weeks ago. Finding them was probably too easy, because as soon as I set up a kid and his buddy pulled up and got out with bow fishing gear and spooked all the fish walking right up to the shore right by my rods in bright clothes. they "didn't see any" (there were dozens) and left within minutes. The real shame of it was that I saw quite a few active feeding fish very near shore, I hAD 2 bait rods out and was rigging up my fly rod as those guys pulled up. A few eventually came back into casting range but were still to wary. Didn't see any big ones either.

Bow fishing trash killed off all the big ones where I used to fish. I guess they must be trashing green lick now too. Those kind of people make me sick. Killing for the sake of killing is just so redneck.

I haven't been out there yet this year. Someone told me they put 20,000 Walleye fingerlings in there. If so I'm glad they started up again. I hardly ever fish from shore but looking in to trying it out. That ramp is just too shallow.

I hope that's correct RE: Walleye fingerlings. In years past they put 10,000 in and, for whatever reason, last year put in 9,900. There's deep enough water to allow for moderate survival rates if they keep the water level up (last year was brutal). It would be nice to have a local place to catch numbers. Those rides to Pymie get expensive by the end of June!

I don't think that 100 fingerlings would make a lot of difference in the population considering the low survival rate of fingerlings. Although the lake is certainly deep enough,it is relatively small compared to good eye lakes. The better eye fishermen are & have been catching their share ,but as far as numbers go,I doubt that it will ever be known as a numbers destination. Too many guys reach for the ruler as soon as they take the fish out of the net, then wonder where all of the fish went.IMO   Last year I threw back a 17" eye & almost caused a guy that was watching me bring it in to have a heart attack. He asked me if I knew how good they tasted, I told him that they are more fun to me to catch than to eat & that now he has a chance to catch it also.  sam

I throw everything back. Haven't kept a fish unless badly hurt...bleeding or whatever in years. I do keep gills, suckers and drum for cat bait though. Circle hooks seem to have been doing pretty well for me as far as hook mortality. Even for Walleyes, I don't need to fish to survive. County market has all the fish I need.

Hats off to all the "better eye fishermen" and the C&R guys! A smaller lake with sufficient depth and plenty of forage would create a good numbers destination if the stocking doubled. Pretty difficult to dispute that.....unless you're looking to claim "better eye fishermen" status.

Please notice that I did NOT claim that status! I am stating an obvious fact that a Good fisherman will generaly catch more than a average fisherman,be it at Greenlick or Lake Arthur or Erie or anywhere else. Sorry if I hurt your feelings. Also they have been stocking Greenlick with eyes for a long time & it has never been known as a numbers lake as far as I know, but I do know of guys(not myself) that catch eyes pretty regularly. Good luck getting them to brag about it on here. Some guys put too much importance on filling their cooler IMO I am not condemning anyone that brings some fish home to eat, only the Greedy ones that don't use common sense & don't understand that someone else would like to catch some also & that a small lake can be hurt by overharvesting. Ask anyone that has been fishing these small local lakes like Green Lick, Acme Dam, Bridgeport how the fishing now compares to what it was before the Internet & higher fishing pressure in the past.   sam

So putting more fish in would allow more fish to be caught?  Thanks for bringing us up to speed.

Alternately: given sufficient habitat, an environment where everyone practiced C&R all the time would be a "good numbers destination" for everyone who came to fish, even without any stocking at all, once a population was established.

    Pretty difficult to dispute that.

Yes, more fish in means more caught. That's the message, genius! I really didn't think it would be that difficult of a concept. Should you feel motivated, you can lobby the PA FBC to impose a slot limit or raise the minimum size, or make it a C&R only fishery. Anglers would just love that, well maybe the "better eye fishermen" wouldn't mind. AS IT STANDS, the FACT is that more stocked means more available. The original message to which I responded said 20,000 were stocked, that would be a 100% increase from years past. All things equal, that means twice as many available. You continue to throw 'em back and thump your chest about it, you and all the "better eye fishermen". So consider yourself up to speed, now...if that's even possible.

Woa !! We need to slow this down!! Simple statement about what I heard turned into a Pi*##*ng match. Not my intentions!!! I have seen people bluegill fishing at a local lake catch nice Pike. Does that make them established Pike fishermen???? Well maybe in their eyes. Like anything else sometimes it's just being in the right place at the right time. So let's just hope the 20,000 number turns out to be true...that's all.

You were the one that acted like you were letting us in on a big secret, not me.

Honestly, I have no interest in doing so.  I don't fish for food, and rarely keep more than 3 fish in a given year, so I couldn't care less about slot limits.  Honestly, I don't even know how they work, since they don't concern me.

If it were made C&R only, it'd make the fishing much more challenging, and cheaper for the state too, though the instant gratification anglers would likely get somewhat justifiably angry over that. As for me, as I said, I don't fish for food, and while I don't claim to be any sort of expert, I do okay catching fish, and I'd appreciate a more challenging destination like that to match my skills against more educated fish.  I'm confident that, in time, I'd do okay on such a body of water.  Clearly not everyone has that assurance.  (And that's okay!)

AS IT STANDS, the FACT is that more stocked means more available.

Who argued that point?  That's like saying water is wet.  No need for all caps.

The original message to which I responded said 20,000 were stocked, that would be a 100% increase from years past. All things equal, that means twice as many available.

Your math skills are formidable.  Comprehension less so.

You continue to throw 'em back and thump your chest about it, you and all the "better eye fishermen".

Where in my post did I "thump my chest"?  Where did I say I was a "better eye fisherman"?  All I said was that if nobody kept fish, there would be more overall catching available.  Regardless of how many are stocked in the first place, if each fish is caught once, thrown back, and caught even just one more time, you've doubled the amount of catching from the same amount of fish stocked.

I think you have a bit of an inferiority complex judging by how defensive and quick to anger you are.

Toolbags never pass up an opportunity to measure urination. Apparently they never pass up an opportunity to take up an entire page with replies either. Anyone who feels the need to occupy 12 inches of screen space is compensating for something!!! I'd wager they fish with a 13 foot rod as well. Ever hear the one about the guy who used a thimble and a rubber band......? I hope I don't need to buy a big screen to read the next reply that is oh so full of wit (or a similar sounding word)! Keep flexing your 'net muscles, Toolbag!

Was at the lake again yesterday evening throwing topwaters Perfect for throwing but no one told the Bass. I got 2 legal size, but expected more.Very small gills Or Crappie were cruising the top with an occasional attack from something,I am guessing bass had me looking for more action. I am surprised that the lake is receding from last weeks level already. 2 guys launched a pontoon boat while I was there & almost didn't get it off of the trailer. Very few people out again. I might have not got many fish, but I did manage to get a nice sized bag of trash again.   sam

I have a hard time getting a 16'er in and out of there yet alone a pontoon. I have to get out there soon, I miss it. Drove by the other day and it looked like a pigpen. I don't know if the pavilion parties leave that mess or just ignorance. Thanks for doing your part Sam and the rest of ours!!!
