Lake Somerset
Hi - I'm kinda new on here. Spend some time reading at work, but not really posting. I was wondering if anyone had any news about Lake Somerset this summer ? I did some searching and learned it was lowered a considerable amount last year. I was just curious as to what the condition of the lake was. Just picked up a new canoe and me and buddy found it on the PA Fish Comm website and were gonna give it a shot till we read that it was having problems with the dam. If anybody has a heads up, thanks ! Mike

I haven't fished it for a month or so but during the spring we were catching decent size crappies when the weather would co-operate. I can't get my boat launched there since the lake is lowered. There were a lot of dead walleye along the shoreline after the walleye spawn so I'm assuming the walleye fishing would still be OK if I could get the boat out. The bullhead and channel cat fishing should also be good still. Don't bass fish or carp fish so can't help with that.

Can you get a canoe in ? I was primarily interested in the bass fishing. Possibly some channels too. Just looking for a different place to hit in my summer rounds. Probably an hour drive for me, may 1:15, was wondering if it would be worth the drive up to spend an afternoon and evening on floating around.

I don't think there would be any problem launching a canoe as there is still a launch there. They did do some work to deepen the launch if your boat is on a trailer. You need to bear to the left of launch roadway when facing the lake. It drops off pretty quick and was all mud the last time I was there. Whatever you do don't get the tow vehicle's wheels off the dry land. They basically dug a deeper hole that may go out 10 to 15 feet from shore before rising up again real quick I believe.

Hey thanks Davef. I haul my canoe on the back of my pickup. So I can basically drag it just about anywhere. I just didn't want to have to drag it a long way with the hernia I have ha ha. Heading to surgery July 15 so I'm trying to do as much fishing as I can. Might go check this place out. Thanks again for help guys. Mike

Thanks bcain. I'm getting nervous about it. I hope I can at least do some lazy bank fishing in the upcoming weeks.

Mike [/quote As Walcat mentions the inguinal hernia surgery is not much to worry about anymore. I have had one on each side over the last 20 years or so, with the most recent about 4 years ago. The one suggestion I have is sleep in a chair the first night afterwards as it easier to get up. For the first one years ago I slept in a waterbed and couldn't crawl out of it the next morning. With the last one within a week I was able to pull an anchor up on Lake Erie and fish within a week with no problem. Was a little sore that first morning getting up from the lazy boy chair but healing time was much quicker. I had no external stitches the second time as they used glue.

That's good to hear. I have a bi-lateral inguinal...at least I think thats what the surgeon called it. Ha ha. Having both sides fixed in one shot. I'm not to stressed about. Biggest concern for me is keeping myself in shape for the upcoming bow season. If I miss some fishing time, at least it will be during the hottest time of the year. I enjoy fall bass fishing a lot more anymore. Thanks guys !

My friend has been going out there and doing well with bass and had some larger channels up to 15#. Since they have it lowered it seems the amount of people have decreased and the fish are still there and actually easier to target.

I might stop at the lake on my way back from an appointment this morning. Weather permitting, anyway. If I fish, I'll post how I do.

The fish comm, should of netted all the fish out of that lake and put those fish in the quemahonning dam instead of letting them die. what a waste of walleyes.

I keep forgetting to ask: 1. How deep is the lake now. 2. Can I get around with a trolling motor and not dig up the bottom ha ha.

I'd guess the deepest is around 10 feet and yes you could use a trolling motor. If fishing is slow watch for the ospreys fishing and I also saw a pair of bald eagles there about 5 weeks ago.

With the decreased water levels, has it been a bonanza for the nice blues that are in there?

If any one cares to try the fishing there with a boat I was able to launch a wide heavy 14 foot boat tonight at Lake Somerset. It was easier than before they lowered it. The hole they dug out is deep enough that I could keep my rear truck wheels about 5 feet away from the waters edge. You probably could not launch it with someone in the boat as once through the hole they dug the water comes back up pretty quick. I launched then waded out on the right side of the hole maybe 25 to 30 feet to pull the boat up on the old gravel launch to get in. Just be sure to bear to the left and keep your truck tires out of the mud at the shoreline. I was crappie fishing with an underwater light and it was slow. Probably caught 30 till 11:30 but only 7 or 8 were around 9 inches.
