HOPE THIS HELPS

That time of year again, out on the boat fishing for perch and we start to catch the "junk fish" (anything that isn't a perch).  We all have different names for them and inevitably a minor squabble occurs with "that's a white perch, no it's a silver bass, no they're called a white bass" and on and on. So I decided to channel the ex-taxonomist in me and do a search on these 2 particular fish to find out exactly what they are called.  We all know perch and walleye are related, same Family: Percidae, just different Genus and Species.  What I found interesting though is that the 2 non yellow perch fish that we catch, the white perch and the silver bass, are also related, even more closely than the yellow perch and walleye.  Before I begin, let's throw away the term silver bass. We've all caught them, yes they're silver, and yes they resemble baby striped bass. Their true designation is the White Bass.  These 2 fish, the White Perch and the White Bass, along with the much larger Striped Bass are all in the Family: Moronidae. There's a 4th, the yellow bass, that is only found in the Mississippi, and down south.  Family Moronidae are known as the Temperate Basses.  And all 4 of these fish share the same Genus, but are 4 different species.   Morone americanus (white perch), Morone chrysops (white bass), Morone saxatilis (striped bass), and Morone mississippiensis (yellow bass).  There's a 2nd Genus, but they're European. And here's a little secret, white perch are delicious, been keeping them for several years now.  People around the Chesapeake have their fish fries with them. So there you have it. All that just to say a white perch is a white perch, and what we call a silver bass is actually called a white bass. But being the pedantic****that I am, I had to go on and on and...

Yeah, I can't remember the specifics off the top of my head, but she basically had to cancel her entire world tour for the surgery and recovery.  She is using the time to write her next album though, so there's that.

Excellent post Pikepredator2! Very thorough. I've always appeciated Cold's posts and found it humourous he posted tiger trout, lol! Burbot, AKA eelpout, lingcod and probably by a few other names also. Always did want to fish for them off the Erie piers in the brutal winter conditions at night. Big fun!!!

No other fish has stripes, spots, or other distinctive markings.  Those speckles, known as vermiculations, positively identify it as a tiger trout.

Good post, but I've eaten tons of white bass and they are by no means a "junk fish." I know you said not a perch. But I'd be almost as happy with a full cooler of them as I would be perch. I said almost... LOL
The fight hard on light tackle and are tastey too.

  Used to catch them by the bucket load off the old jetty on PI. We would walk out and watch for all of the minnows to start freaking out and then cast a white Mr Twister right into the midst of the ruckus.  Instant fish fry.

yeah plum, growing up we called em silver bass too, still do, even after my post here.  never heard my dad once refer to a walleye as a walleye, it was always yellow pike and he and his brothers used to troll for them in a row boat using june bug spinners and a night crawler.
