Correct Information About Kayak Registration?

I was told by the lady at the Washington County Park Office that in order to take my kayak onto Cross Creek Lake, I must have it registered with the state ($10), and also have a county sticker ($10), even if I don't use the boat launch. Is this correct? She didn't sound very knowledgeable or confident about what she was saying, and there can't be any harm in asking...so...her I am.

    From the PFBC website:

    LAUNCH PERMITS
Owners of unpowered boats (canoes, kayaks, rowboats, etc.) can launch their boats at PFBC lakes and access areas or Pennsylvania state parks if their boats display a PFBC launch use permit, OR boat registration, OR Pennsylvania State Parks launch permit or mooring permit. Pennsylvania State Parks recognizes PFBC boat registrations and launch permits. The Commission does NOT recognize launch permits from other states. A PFBC launch permit can be purchased online at the Commission’s website. An unpowered boat may have a registration OR launch permit, but is not required to have both.

County parks require the $10.00 permit.

For the record: The portion I C&Ped is in regard to the state only, so county regs. may tack on additional fees.

That said, the Launch Permit should work in lieu of a registration, and it is preferable, for the simple fact that once you get a boat registered, it must always be registered from there on out.  Not so with the launch permit.

When you fill out the form for the launch permit for Cross Creek COUNTY Park it does ask for the boats state reg #. That being said several friends and I have used the lake without the launch permit till we have time to go to the County parks office only thing is make sure you have the cost of the permit with you in cased stopped by the deputy on duty. $7.50 local or $10.00 other wise. Chances are the deputy is not going to bother you if you're not causing trouble and as for the fish commish if they sshow up more then once a year I'd be shocked. I've seen several boats from WV over there with no permits.

Hmmm, I'd be interested (in the OP's position) to talk to someone who knew what they were talking about.  I'd be surprised if whoever made that rule would specifically require a kayak to be registered as opposed to the launch permit, especially when the issuing agent says that they're synonymous for that type of craft.

Not saying it isn't true.  I've seen more ridiculous regs zealously enforced by stupid local govt., but I would be mildly surprised.

I'd sat if it is one person non-powered it should not need reg # just a launch permit BUT you're dealing with people who used $35,000.00 to buy a boat with county parks money put it on the lake every spring leaves it there till late fall and won't cover it 90% of the time.

All boats motorized or non-motorized and multi-chambered float tubes, belly boats, framed pontoons , etc require a county launch sticker, regardless of where you launch at Cross Creek Lake.

As I understand the rule you must only purchase a non-motorized permit if you also plan to use state owned facilitities like State Parks, Fish and Boat Commission Lakes/Launches.

They can be strict about the county launch permit. There used to be a park employee who sat in Ten Mile Creek park all day waiting for people to use the launch without one.
