Gar in the Beaver/Ohio
I've never caught a gar, they are on my bucket list. I know they are plentiful in this system. I have had a few takes, but the hookset istough due to thier hard mouths. My question is this; I've heard that some guys will use yarn or some kind on nylon fibers tied to the hook along with the bait to help tangle in thier teeth. Has anybody tried this and what's the best way to set it up ? Or if not, whats the best way to hook one with standard tackle. Thanks in Advance !

Don't forget about the Allegheny system also. I have seen a few in lower Deer Creek too.

I've never caught or even seen a gar, but I've heard of people using wool to catch other toothy critters. I don't see why you couldn't use something like that. Check out M. Hood's channel on youtube. He does a lot of gar fishing videos.

You can take a 6 inch piece of rope, and unravel the threads on all but about 1/2 inch at the end. Tie this piece to the hook shank or just above, securely, and when the gar grabs hold the loose strands tangle in and around its teeth, making it much easier to get them to shore. I do this when fly fishing using nothing but the length of rope as my fly, and they will hit it. Gar do hit minnows, you just usually have to wait after their first run plus the time to position the bait in their mouth, in order to hook them.

I've caught 2, one had the hook looped around his top jaw. The other got wrapped up in my line and it was caught around it's pec fins. I tried making a small sparse rope skirt that I put on a jig head with a minnow, but the only 2I got it in front of wouldn't hit it.

Every gar I've caught in the Ohio river I got on minnows. if you want to target them use a small hook with a small minnow, they are very good at stealing bait. Also, they are a very slimey fish.

i have caught quite a few on the ohio below dashields. i agree with gravey. they love minnows and will clean you out pretty quick. the ones i managed to land had their noses wrapped in the line. they do put up a good fight.

The access road that had slipped away, is being worked on right now, and should be opened soon, i hope. I live nearby and will take a closer look.

thanks for taking a look. look forward to your post. its been over a year since that road gave way. has to be tough on the workers unless they have special permission on a hidden road to get access.

Fruntz, The lock workers use the railroad access road that runs along the tracks, at the entrance where the workers get on the access road they put up a set of gates that are locked. I assume the lock workers have the keys. As soon as i see that road work has been completed and road is open to get to the locks i will post here. Good luck and good fishing.
