west end bridge carp

took a trip down memory lane to the west end bridge on sunday. i fished this spot alot before erie fever took over. we went carpin with corn and burger king fries. i was impressed with the quality of the carp. nothing like i remembered from the 70's. beautiful, healthy chromers with snow white bellys that fought like no walleye ever could. a few smallmouth and a nice cat thrown in completed the day. i have gotten so caught up in expensive boats and tackle over the years that the pleasure of fighting these beasts was almost forgotten. one of the funnest days i have had fishing in a long time. anyone want to buy a trophy walkaround with a gizillion rod holders, electronics and lures?

Ahhhh, the old West End Bridge. One of my original favorite carp spots in Western PA.
I used to fish it on the South End of the bridge (27 - 30 yrs ago). Can you still get in under there?

Always had the biggest river carp (that I ever caught) lurking down in there. Never had a scale, but looking back on it - probably up to @ 20 lbs or so for the biggest of them.
I also remember HUGE rats as well. Especially once the sun went down.

I stopped fishing there when they found a dead body under there......................but have always wanted to get back.

    Maybe someday..........

on the west end!  ah well, just a SS remark to get everyone's juices running.  west end bridge is first bridge on the ohio down river from point.  easiest access is on the north side down by the casino.  i don't know if there is much access left on the south side.  just mapquest or google earth the casino and go down stream.  it's easier to fish farther up by heinz field.  you can park next to heinz field and walk down to the river.  also, there is a good spot by western pennsylvania prison.  It is actually well taken care of and yoiu don't have to fight the overgrowth and the rats.  again mapquest west penn pen and you'll see location and get directions.  good carpin and cattin to ya!

That's a very good point in getting caught up in all the expensive lures and getting "erie fever" and you tend to forget about just how much fun catching fish is. Anyhow how much you selling that Trophy for???? lol....

Glad you had a good time bud.

Was just under the west end bridge yesterday with the boat. There were 2 fishermen on the south side of the bridge--doing quite well. So access is apparently available.

forgot to mention.  on the south side of the bridge is where saw mill run (s - - t; as we called it when i was growing up in knoxeville) creek enters the river.  another interesting spot may be where chartiers creek enters the ohio down at the bottoms in mckees rocks.  i've seen people fishing chartiers where the aldi's / value city / chevy dealer shopping center is.  to get there head toward the rocks for the west end and instead of making the left into the rocks go straight and within twenty five yards you will be crossing the creek with the railroad brige to your right.  also you can fish near the point downtown and get into some good fishin.  has anyone fished off that area that you can walk down to by the convention center? good fishin to all.  and for any of you wild game guys, wholey's just took on a line of buffalo bob unusual beef sticks and jerky.
