Nice Boat Eman! Congratulations! You'll have lots of fun on that thing. You gonna put a kicker on it for the HP restricted lakes?

Awesome boat man.  That is the exact boat that I was looking for when I was shopping for mine, although prefer 20HP over the 50HP, but not hard to add as a kicker.  Don't get too frustrated making the conversion from foot to water.  The success that you had on foot likely won't instantly transfer (didn't for me).  There is a learning curve, but I'm sure you will figure it out, and end up doubling what you did from shore.  Get some gear that runs a little deeper, you are likely used to fishing from shallow water going deep, much of what you do is now reversed, add to that you are elevated over the water too.  Congrats, be safe, and don't get carried away (it is true what they say about throwing money in the water after buying a boat).

I haven't decided if im going to be selling the 50 and getting a new 20 or if im going to keep the 50 and run a 9.9 kicker.. I love Erie.. And that 50 would go along way.. I just got done cleaning it all up.. I got a awesome deal on it.. I cant wait to get on the water. Ed

I had the same delema.  Most folks selling with 20HPs are asking a lot.  Most likely a 20HP isn't getting you on plane, so a 9.9 or 15 is just going to barge you along 2 mph slower than a 20HP.  The 50HP is nice too if you happen to get stuck in a storm on a restricted lake.  I have never done it, but wouldn't think twice about it.

Dude if it were me, I'd keep the 50 and get a 9.9
I have a 16' that I wish I felt confidant enough to put on Erie but with only a 15HP I just can't bring myself to do it.

If you are ever looking for company to share gas costs with to fish Erie let me know, I'd love to go up and pound some perch.

Nice boat man that is a good first boat and way better than my first one.  Just curious do you have your boaters safety certification, because of your age and the size of the motor you have to have it, its the law.  It is a good course and you will learn alot, i know i did when i took it.  I did the one online and it took about 8 hours to do while i was at work lol.  Have fun and i hope to see you on the water.  If you have any questions dont hesitate to ask

Nice boat eman. perfect size for a starter boat. Mine is about the same size but with a 70hp motor. Please be careful if you take her up on erie. Thats a very small boat for such a big lake unless your just planning on fishing coves and stuff not open water. I wouldnt even attempt it to be honest. Too much good fishing around here to risk losing yourself or your boat up on the big water. Thats a good size musky

When I say Erie, im not going out with all of the big boats just alittle bit off shore.. I had a hard time last night.. I spun in circles on the river.. And the fish finder is way outdated.. I need a fish finder, anchors, and drift socks.. Lots of work to still put into it.. Plus I want to put a 9.9 on it for trolling for walleye and musky..
What would you guys recommend on a fish finder? Im looking for something with down imaging, temperature, speed, gps, chartplotter.. I do like the Humminbird 597 combo.. Ed

Might as well spend the money and go with hummingbird side imagining or lowrance has some decent deals on finders with all those accessories. Both systems are really great and pretty detailed.  Nothing like they show on the commercials but still pretty amazing what it shows!

    Re:My first boat!!!! 2013/05/24 12:04:11 (permalink)
Do you have an electric trolling motor on the bow?  I use mine to troll with.  Have it point forward and use the transom motor(s) as a tiller.  Not sure you will go fast enough for musky trolling, but I think mine gets in the 2-3 mph range.  Definitely not going to work on Erie or upstream on faster moving rivers, but seems to work well on flat to semi chop smaller lakes.  It does get off track in high wind gusts too.  If you have the money, go with a 4-stroke, especially if using primarily to troll.  Going less than 1/2 throttle on my 2-stroke 15 = fumes in your face if trolling with the wind.  I don't have any issues WOT, or 1/2 throttle, which is 90% of what mine is used for.  I will usually only troll with my smaller 2 stroke if it is really windy and the electric won't do it.  If you are buying new, might as well price out the 20hp, since it sounds like that is your long term plan.  Doing that with a side imaging w/ GPS (mapping card likely extra), you are going to end up with a nice price tag.  If you have the disposable income, more power to you & extra congrats!  You will still catch fish with an old depth finder.  If you have an iPhone, you can get the Navionics app to take care of the GPS for relatively cheap.  A handheld GPS that will accept Navionics works well too (which is my setup).  Nothing wrong with fishing visible structure too...  A boat will open up 100s of new spots that don't need any electronics.  You don't want to end up overwhelming yourself and your fishing buddies with too many gadgets, while you are learning boating basics and adjusting your fishing techniques from the shore to boat.  I did similar with trying to troll with dipsey divers and making things much more complicated than it needed to be when I first got my boat.  Enjoy it, and test the water before diving in.  You have a great looking boat, that you can take years to build on.  Not to sound like an old man or anything...

Ed, my buddy has the 597ci combo that we use quite frequently on my boat as well. The GPS and Chart plotter is really nice, small screen is a downfall but it's definitely good enough for any PA lake. It is very easy to use as well as it not being to pricey.

Yes I do pork , 55# thrust.. My dad pretty much preached the same thing to me.. Throwing all lf my money into the boat that I have taken out one time and just recently bought.. The first thing I want is a decent anchor. My dad laughed last night but I didn't find it very funny getting thrown into circles in the current lol. We are going out tomorrow to the Ohio River. He loves it.

    Nice Ride E!

If you're careful and watch the weather you can fish the big pond with her. If it doesn't have a vhf radio, get one. Don't forget you'll need flares too. As for the sonar, I would recommend getting a combo GPS/sonar especially if you're gonna fish Erie with her. Check out the new Raymarine Dragonfly, pretty sweet unit for the money. Defender had some good prices www.defender.com

FWIW, I've never cared for Humminbird, put one of the newer ones on my dad's pontoon... still not impressed. I have Lowrance and Eagle on my boat but if I was going to (and I may) buy a new one I'd seriously look at that Raymarine...

I had the same speach from my Dad.  I listened and put my money in an old house.  It gave me shelter, learned a ton while I renovated and made a few bucks when I sold it.  Although, it cut into fishing/boating more than I would have liked.  Sorry for the old man speach again...

Try using a second anchor.  I don't think the best single anchor will keep you moving around in wind & current.  The better anchors will keep you from pulling the anchor, but little they can do for side to side movement.  If you have a concrete block hanging around the house, tie it onto the back, and give a try with your existing (assuming on your bow).  You can get away with two cheaper anchors with a 16' boat.  Mine is 17' and probably as wide or wider, and holds me unless extremely windy.  I usually go and find cover in a cove or point with trees, if it is that windy.

Not saying mine is, first thing that came to mind that most might have laying around...  I have an old metal gear that my dad picked up from the mill 30 years ago and had his buddy weld an eye bolt on.  The other is concrete, but moulded with an eye bolt.  I got the idea from a 12' jon boat that I was perch fishing on, with some duud on the Muddy Creek section of Arthur...

Ed,It's not just the weight of the anchor. There is a formula, that I don't remember, but am sure that others on here do, that tells you how much rope to leave out for the depth that you are in. I think it is called rote or something. Anyways it has to do with the angle of the rope. Also don't forget to have an knife handy in case you get hung up in bad weather & have trouble getting the anchor up,especially if you have the anchor over the stern. I got into serious trouble on Pymy when I got hung up on a reef in a sudden storm. Also those heavy anchors are a bit** when you lift them a few times, especially if you are by yourself. Be careful & have fun.  sam

    Re:My first boat!!!! 2013/05/24 18:38:43 (permalink)
Eman89so- The figures you found may be OK for whoever wrote it up but around here  (including LAKE ERIE) if you use 3-5 X the depth you will be fine. In most cases 3x. In the info you found if you found perch in 60ft. of water in ERIE you would need 420-600ft. of rope to anchor- way-way -way too much! The type of anchor you use also makes a difference. For ERIE you should be looking for "Danforth" or a "Sea" type anchor for the front of your boat. The angle of the anchor rope when to anchor is down is called "scope". If you put a 4-6' peice of 3/8 chain between your anchor and anchor rope your anchor will catch sooner and you won't need as much scope = less anchor line out. This is just for ERIE.  For pym. or other small waters mushroom anchors - cement blocks or anything heavy will do, many, many anchors now call the bottom of pymatuning "home". Hopes this helps you out and congrats on the boat - she looks great!
