Never fished the bay and ponds for small mouth, or any other species,so I can't answer your question directly. But three things I'd probably do if I wanted an answer to the question you're asking and not getting any answers:
1. I'd use the search function on this board. Maybe type in "smallmouth bay" to start, and limit your search to the Fisherie.com discussion boards. If that didn't turn up results I was looking for, I'd limit it to just "smallmouth" or "smallies" and probably include the northwest forum in my search since there are probably some similarities to catching them in the bay to places like Pymy and Shenango.
2. I'd send a polite PM to some of the board members whose posts showed up most often in my search, asking for some advice on info. I've done steps 1 and 2 quite a few times on here for different things and have learned a ton - probably more than I would have if I would have just posted a question.
3. And if I didn't get much from doing #1 & #2, I'd probably start with a universal type lure that can catch a wide variety of fish - maybe a 3" white power grub on a 1/16 or 1/8 oz jig head fished pretty slowly or a 2.5" Berkley Gulp minnow in an emerald shiner color on a 1/32 or 1/16 oz jig head or a Little Cleo (seems to be a favorite of some of the better bay fishermen on here) or maybe some type of suspending jerk bait or something a little more specific for bass like a tube jig, crankbait, a jig n pig or a spinnerbait. And if you get sick of throwing lures and want to try some bait, I would imagine the primary - and in some cases secondary or tertiary - forage for many species of fish in Erie - emerald shiners - would probably be a good thing to try.
