Donegal

Went to Donegal today. My brother caught 3 trout and a bunch of gills. Another guy with us caught 5 trout and I caught 3 nice bows, 6 gills and a 14 inch Largemouth. It was a pretty good day. A little hot though. Seen a good many reptiles. A bunch of water snakes and the scariest one was I was sitting on the ground and heard a noise. A foot behind me was  3 foot milk snake striking at me. Not afraid of snakes but, that takes you by surprise.

Another thing. I saw something I couldn't explain today at Donegal. I seen something come out of the water that looked like the size of a small human like they were treading water. It never resurfaced so that rules out waterfowl. I have seen ducks dive before but it never came back up. It stayed out of the water longer than I think a fish could. Has anyone ever seen anything like this?

Call up Jeremy Wade, he'll figure it out

There was a guy swimming multiple laps of keystone lake on Friday, dam to the bridge. I saw him do it 3 times each way before I left

It could have been a person. I didn't know if anyone is allowed in the water. That is unfathomable to me because if it doesn't have chlorine in it, I wont swim in it. Lakes and rivers have never been my choice of swimming water. Didn't know if anyone has ever seen fish come out of the water for a couple seconds. Would have had to be a carp because the size.

Muskies will also swim around on the surface with their noses out of the water, but your description was not a very good one and I don't know if there are even musky in there.

There are very large Carp & Musky in there & also some large Snapping Turtles which also can cause surface disturbance. BTW a friend of mine caught a Crappie there this year that measured 18" long with a 15" girth. We had been doing well on Crappie there but nothing that big before.  sam

This thing came out of the water like you would see a person bobbing in chest deep water. I have seen large waterfowl dive under and stick their tails in the air but nothing ever resurfaced. Had to be some kind of fish but I have just never seen a fish do that. Fish usually just jump and splash. this looked like it was coming up slowly taking something out of the air. Could have been a thick musky taking something off the surface and just come out of the water pretty far. It was  a little ways away from me. Couldn't get a clear view. More than likely a musky from what I have seen them do while fishing Edinboro Lake. Seen some big ones there years ago.

No it wasn't my imagination. I am not saying it was something weird. I just don't know what it was. I have seen ducks and geese dive under water and look like that but this thing never surfaced. I remember years ago when I was a teenager. I was fishing Edinboro Lake. Right in front of my boat a BIG musky came out of the water probably a good two feet to hit something on the surface. I never seen what it hit, maybe a frog. I just didn't think there were any musky in Donegal. I am leaning towards a big musky.

You know walleye jigs, I have thought about that. Not in this case. I just have thought about what if someone would dump a big gator in a small lake like that. It could live all summer and into fall. Like I said, I don't think that is what I have seen but, you never know what some loonies will do.

There definitely are musky in Donegal. I watched one take a small duck last summer. It was intense. There are a few beaver at Donegal too. Maybe that's what you saw?

flyingmoles, now you got me thinking again. A beaver is another possibility. A beaver could look like a person at a distance. At the distance I seen it, if it just swam away, then I wouldn't be able to see it cause they carry their head pretty low in the water. I didn't know there are beavers there since I didn't see any beaver dams. Whatever it was, it was some kind of animal or fish. I have seen a lot of wildlife at Donegal. Multiple snakes the other day. A milk snake striking at me the other day. Last year we watched a young fawn swim across by the dam and run  up through the parking lot. That's why I like fishing. There are lots to see.

Beavers might surprise you with where they hang out.

I saw one last year on a creek with no beaver dams/lodges, very little sign (pointy stumps, etc.).  Just noticed a tree limb floating upstream...and this massive ball of wet fur dragging it.  Right near a highly populated part of town too.

There was a beaver dam there last year. It was in 4 mile run, just before it enters Donegal lake. They're definitely around the area.

Oh, the one I saw wasn't anywhere near Donegal...idk if that's what you were thinking...but that's pretty cool.  I know they can be destructive little creatures, but I think it's cool that they're around.

beavers are definitely one of those "not in my backyard" type animals.  really interesting, really fun to read/hear/see.  but it would suck if you had to deal with one on your own property.

Probably was a beavers tail coming out of the water since it looked like a human. Like I said before, I have seen a musky come pretty far out of the water to hit something on the surface. Didn't look like when you see a fish jump out of the water fast. It came out kinda slow. I also seen a big one in Edinboro Lake floating dead. That lake has some big ole muskies in there. Been years since I have been there. I think I might take a trip up there this summer.

was at donegal a few weekends ago nightfishing on the wooded side.  bout 10pm i start hearing this loud sound, the sound of something being dragged over dry leaves.  it was pretty close and seemed to be getting closer, my first thought was somebody/something is dragging a body through the woods.  sound seemed to be getting closer.  then i happened to think, i saw a tree earlier in the day that had been cut down by a beaver.  i'm betting that sound i heard was a beaver dragging tree limbs through the woods.

I accidently snagged this guy a couple years ago on Donegal.

I thought about trying to get my spoon back but his head was as big as my fist and when he started to strike at the side of my boat I decided I like having all my fingers and just cut the line.

I was at Bridgeport last year. In the grass at top of the hill before the boat ramp there was a snapper sitting in the grass. I looked around a bit and when I left he was still there. There was some little kids playing not far away so I figured I should move it into the weeds so no little kid goes sticking their finger near it. Well lets say, they can bring their head farther out of their shell than I thought. He almost got me when I grabbed the sides of his shell. I them tried putting him in a crate. He got turned around in the crate and he struck so fast, I felt his nose hit my fingers. I dumped him in the weeds. I like my fingers and that will be the last time I mess with one.
