What Fighters !!! ..... Or Not.

Fishing the Yough last Friday, I caught two Eyes.  One 12" or son, and one about 15".  I didn't even know they were on the line.  Thought I was reeling sticks in until I felt a slight tug both times.  I liken these fish to the French...... NO FIGHT IN EM.  Haha.

The bigger ones put up a bit more of a fight, but pound for pound, they aren't winning many battles.  Arguably the best eating fresh water fish.  I prefer yellow perch, but much rather clean a walleye than 5 or so perch for the same amount of meat.  Some times you will find them aggressive, and they'll hit hard.  But usually can tell what they are after about 10 seconds on.  Getting a large one out of a good current is fun.  I landed a 30" in the Allegheny about 4 years ago in some current, and was convinced it was a channel cat or musky, it took 3-4 nice runs.  Nice surprise, and swam off to repopulate after measurements.  One of the cooler looking fish out there too, IMO.

IMO the size of the fish caught ..12" er  and barely 15" plays quite the role in the fight. The equipment you are using also plays a role in the "fight". Catching crappie, bulls or perch, on a medium or MH rod is no fun, catching them on ultra or light rod is a lot of fun. I guess the same could be said for eyes, on a medium light rod some do put up a fight with the head shakes and runs, others do feel like a "log".
As Porktown said they are sought more for the taste then for the fight. But personally I still prefer Eye fishing over any other.
