Chime In Please looking for the correct answer

A pro bass fisherman over the weekend told me that when the smallmouth go up into the creeks it is illegal to target them. Now, I have looked it up in the book and I can't find anything directly stating that you are not allowed to. I have been fishing for them for years in the creek during the spawn along with quite a few other guys that I have seen throughout the years.. Any truth to this? Can I get I trouble? Illegal/Legal? any input would help..Thanks, Ed

    Below is taken from the Fish & Boat Commissions website....Link is below.
    If you fish for a bass on a redd and catch it or don't catch it.....no problem.  If you cast again to the same bass on a redd, you are in violation.
     
     
    "NOTE: It is not a violation of the bass regulations if a bass is immediately returned unharmed to the waters from which it was taken. It is unlawful for an angler to cast repeatedly into a clearly visible bass spawning nest or redd in an effort to catch or take bass."

    If they could only enforce this (they can't). It is put in place for anglers to respect the annual spawn of one of our favorite species. We can't be trusted with that, though- and we can't resist shooting fish in a barrel.

    Just my opinion but I prefer a smallmouth bass in all its glory aggressively attacking my lure as opposed to forcing a bass to defensively eat one. Really, where's the challenge in the latter?

    Sheesh...it's a good thing the law doesn't apply to making repeated casts to visibly spawning salmonids.

    People fish the streams over bedding bass every year since the history of the creeks.

    It's not illegal. There is a trophy season in place during the spawn that reads you can keep 1 smallmouth per day over 20". I fish for them every year and you will never have a problem with the wardens. I think the pro that told you that you can't target them is trying to keep you out of his honey hole.

    I laugh at those who call themselves "pros".  No truth to it.  There are laws against targeting spawning bass but even those are difficult to enforce.

    * It is unlawful to conduct or participate in a fishing tournament for bass on Lake Erie or Presque Isle Bay during the period from opening day of the trout season in April until midnight the first Saturday after June 11.
