Duck Hollow trail access

While cruising around on Google maps I was looking at access along the Mon and spotted this place.  It's directly across the river from the Waterfront and a little south of the Greys Bridge.   Does anyone have any cautions about stopping and fishing here?   Or is it a fairly "okay" place for lack of better terms or would you recommend avoiding it totally due to undesirables and possible trouble?

Not sure about the actual trail, never went down that far, but people do. The area in general is a very popular spot. Lots of folks fishing off the wall / parking lot and some wading out in front. I've fished it plenty with no trouble.

Awesome, Thanks MisterZ. I was skeptical with hearing about all of the issues as of late down near the trails... I was mainly looking to just park and fish at the parking lot or walk down to the shore at the creek when the river is low. Also, is it fairly deep in that are (channel or holes?). I'm also assuming its the usual suspects to be caught in that area or is there an abundance in a certain species? (I don't need hot baits or techniques.). Just want to know if I can throw divers and work jigs etc.

Mags, it's fairly shallow for a good bit with a couple deep holes. It does get fished heavy as Mr. Z said. I've fished it many times from my boat with very good success on Smallies & Spots. I have also caught a lot of white bass, small sauger and small walleye. I'd stick with the jigs, not worth losing a diver or two. IMO wading out would be a better idea to get away from the crowds a bit.

    Got Walleye???

ive seen people wading at duck hollow in the past.  ive never fished it myself though.  very interesting spot historically though.  i think that parking lot is where the barges used to park when they were "building" the 9 mile run slag heap.

Good info from TheBlueLagoon.  I've waded it quite a bit over the years. Just wading in river shoes and shorts (my skin has never melted off). It is mostly shallow but I've heard of a few holes out there that produce walleye and I believe I found them to be within casting distance. I wouldn't waste time fishing from the wall - you need to haul what few fish you catch up about 20 ft. and drop them back down to release them.

Usually I get a fair amount of small smallies and spotted bass (14" and under) a few times a year and I hear white bass come in at times. But last year was strange. I fished it about 6 times in the early spring without a bite. A few guys would fish there with livebait and kick my butt big time. Took a while to figure them out. Once it gets too hot out I don't bother with the rivers so no idea how it fishes in the summer.

Awesome info thanks everyone!  I may pass on it since it seems heavily fished but I can't resist new spots and such!

    Turd Hollow!

I used to live about a mile from there, in Greenfield, about 15 years ago. I fished it about 1-2 times per week, if I didn't want to travel to some of the better river spots. I'd much rather fish some of the popular Allegheny spots or Ohio spots if traveling though. Even some much better Mon spots heading away from town a little further. I wouldn't make a special trip. Safety wise, I never had any issues.

I would never wet wade that spot. Also never fish if any sort of rain is in the forecast. There is a combined sewage overflow right up stream from the "pier" and stream mouth, that will have raw sewage dumping into the river with anything more than a light rain. I witnessed some guys wading out there and caught in the CSOs opening up, disgusting. I used to wait at least two days after a rain, and still had days that there was toilet paper on my line... If you follow that, and hit it right, it had put up some great days. I did most of my fishing wading out on the creek mouth sandbar. Back when the wipers were stocked, I had a few good days on them. A lot of white bass, sauger and smallmouth too.

If you really want to see something disgusting, go right after a good rain. Carp will stack up right outside of the CSO and eat the crap coming out...

Turd hollow lol...Ive seen this at the mouth of pine creek on multiple ocassions. Sadly, some of the best carp fishing i had was on those days. Battling the toilet paper and tampons were some of the worst fishing memories I have haha

Ugh... Not even gonna check it out. I'm just looking for something a hair closer to hone that I don't have to use a ton of gas to get to. I'll scout the Yough I suppose.

The worse part are the prophylactics hanging on the railing.  IMO that area will change soon with the development above.

That Summerset has been developing for a while.  I'm not sure if they have any access (besides construction access) from below, so doubt that many are venturing down.  It would be nice if they cleaned it up and made for some river front park developement.  Until the CSOs are fixed, cleaning it up wouldn't really be worth much.  I think it is in the $30M range, just to plan the fixes to the CSOs and around $4B to actually do it...

Don't let this scare you off on fishing the rivers.  Hold off two days after a rain, and you should be fine.  The further from town, the cleaner it is, at least sewage wise (can't say the same about industrial waste, since almost all of the city's industry is gone).  Definitely still some sewage outside of town, but less density.  The Yough probably would be a better place to target, if coming from Greensburg.  Unless you are focusing on flatheads, the Yough has about the same fish available.  From Greensburg, you can probably access around McKeesport relatively easily, not really sure of any safe places around there, but sure there are some.  The Dravosburg side should be safe if you can find access.  If you are close to 70, you can swing down to 51, and hit Elizabeth.  There is a park under the bridge that is safe.  A good variety of fish and don't need to wade.  Not sure about flatheads, but can't imagine they aren't there.

They have already built an access sidewalk down to just above the rr tracks.  It is lined with lights and they are buffing up the landscape.  They have just about ran out of space to expand up there and the major construction will come to an end realtively shortly.

There are many small rats down there too.  One night I was fishing from the wall down near pee corner using cut bait and apparently got enough fish juice on the handles of my reels to coax the rats into licking them.  Later that night they stole half a trout out of the bait bag.  They weren't those big Erie rats, maybe 10" at most.

I haven't been down there for a while.  That is nice that they are cleaning it up.  Not that the pier portion is all that bad.  Hopefully they don't "clean it up" too much and kick out the fishermen.

There were a bunch of rats down at the Southside Riverfront Park.

I hear ya, I am afraid of being "cleaned up" from the area.

The google sat. images seem to be far behind.  They added a nice kayak/canoe launch on the east side of the mouth.  You have to wade out ~20' to get to anything deeper than 3" of water, but it is better than before.

Ugh nasty I guess I should toss my river shoes that I used around duck hollow! Just fished it this weekend by the way. Got skunked, but I saw someone catch 5-6 smallies and a nice walleye from shore. I'll hit it again soon and post results. Waiting for the water to clear up a bit.

I fished that area by boat this weekend. Cookie cutter smallies- white bass - sauger in the Costco area. Anyone fish the Streets Run point area? Didn't pull anything out below sand castle. Wind got a little annoying.

I was mainly looking for places on the mon, the only 2 i've fished are the PFBC launch area near the Spears exit on 70 and down under the rt 40 bridge in Brownsville.   Flatheads are a bonus but any cats/carps and other types are welcome.  I drive to L/D6 on the Allegheny quite often and don't mind it but if I could get something a tad closer and be fairly productive I'd be fine with it on a Friday night or something.  I hear tons of people say Lock 3 on the Allegheny is great I just haven't gone and scoped it out yet... lol
