hey folks, I kinda been off my game on the fishing dept but hopefully that will change starting friday..
Here are just a few more shots of my short , basically 6 day run on stripers.. The pic's suck and I was mostly alone.. Only kept 1 fish myself so thats really the only good one in the bunch..

After that this was a few from last weeks total colapse of conditions on the Ausable..
Again very few pics taken and I didn't want to trash the ole' ladys camera too bad..
Hope you enjoy, look forward to MANY more from me and I will look forward to yours as well..

Very nice Rich, someday I will get up there for those Stripers.
Those trout from the river are very nice for stockies, around here most of the state stocked fish are ssmmaallll,8"-10",at least they were the last few years.I'm trying to get into the fly fishing again for the local native/stocked trout and am buying stuff to tie those tiny flies that they like. The last 20 yrs I've been concentrating on the trib fishing, different equipment than the local scene.

Great Pix, HT.  Good to hear you were not frozen to D w that sudden spring blizzard!

I have also been playing with the local stockies and also have been pleasantly surprised by a few "perfect" little brown trout  (no fin wear, no tail changes, full colors, only 7" long) in streams that only a few years ago were only put and take streams, so things are looking up for the next generations.  I am also finding out why, when I was last in this small stream, small fly game I didn't see a lot of old timers out for the spinner falls (threading flies onto 5x in the near dark, even with a light, is quite a challenge anymore), and after about 15 years of tying where a number 10 Skykomish was small, parachute dries on size 18 hooks are nearly impossible!  But it beats coming home and listening to the neighborhood siren concerts every night, and there is still a thrill to watching a 12" fish come up for a floater, even if he spent youth in a concrete raceway.

Another 2-3 weeks of flyflinging, and then it is 9 days of Jazz from 5:30 to 11:30 every night!
Maybe I'll have a camera by the time I hit the 'daks in July.

Was going to go out this afternoon at around 4 , but the  winds a pretty bad at 13 to 15 with some larger gusts.   With T storms a possibility I have seen that lake go from OK to bad to worse in no time.   With just a 14 foot boat  I will probably stay in

Bummer Clint, maybe a night bite cruse if the winds die and T-storms hold off.

Well my wife wanted to go yakin this morning. Told her I had TONS of things to do around the house.. Then I got thinking, what better way to spend some quality time together, with my rod & reel of course.. I blew off the yard work and obliged my wife..
Only took 1 pic of many caught.. All were spared for another day as didn't feel like cleaning fish:

Finally I got home and worked my butt off just to plant a fraction of my garden, mess with the pool but looks like the lawn mowing will have to wait.. Neighbors are used to tall grass here as they are all 6' under and very peaceful..

Well my nephew called me a 430 and asked if we were going.   The winds were moderate, but he sounded like he wanted to go bad and who am I to turn down a kid who wants to go fishing.   Went out of Godfrey  at 600. Wind was from the south and there was a good chop, but it was manageable  and a good drift from deep to shallow.  Fished all around there, but no waldo's .   We got and huge bass, a white perch and a pretty big rock bass. The rock bass was one of the biggest I have seen and when he got it on he tried to hand me the pole because he was so excited.  One of the bigger fish he has caught.   At around 830.  A small front went through and man did it get bad fast,  lightning, wind, but only a few drops of rain.    Everyone high tailed it off.   It blew right through,  by the time were we were driving through Constantia wind was next to nothing and barely a chop.

I think I might be turning him on to it so I may have a new partner for steel this fall.    Some pics tomorrow

Nice smallies Clint.  Drifting using bait?  Experiment with that big ugly articulated fly drop shot style.

Yes drifting with a jig and a minnow.  When the season opens I will try with the fly rod.    No a bad idea though on drifting the flies.     Hmmmmmmm..................

Pretty sweet C, looks like will have an excellent steelhead partner . You should be proud and he grateful to have an awesome willing person and instructor.
I lack greatly in the patience dept. with my kids and grandchildren .

Don't know much about Oneida but crayfish are deadly on smallies & eyes

If you have electronics use it to locate and drop shot the area.  Gently bounce the rig with that articulated fly about 1-2' off the bottom.  Drop shot rigging is easy and very effective. Might even work for waldo's too.

Went out oneida at 5:30 on saturday morning from bridgeport. Had an 18.5"er to the boat in the first hour on a rapala slow trolled with a bottom bouncer. Nothing else for the next 6 hours. As clint said (btw nice report clint) the wind just kept on shifting and there was a brief shower. In seven hours the wind changed sirection four times... i was happy to get the one keeper though. It was a fat non/hatchery fish too. Saturday evening had a shot at a monster small mouth on my first cast but it pulled loose without the hook set.... started pouring minutes later so that was that. On the way home we stopped at a trout spot before sunset.... my son and i nailed ten brown trout... he caught four himself... he had a blast. We kept eight between the two of us... oh yeah, earlier in the day we went to a little creek after igot home from oneida and my daughter caught a little creek chub too!!! Yesterdays dinner was outstanding with walleye brown trout and locally grown vegetable salad... yummy...was gonna go for evening smallies afterwards but working in the sun most of the day and the fishing all day saturday knocked me out...tight lines

fished oneida on friday and sunday, friday started with a keeper on the first troll then couldnt buy a bite. I use mainly bottom bouncers and worm harnesses, switched colors and weights nothing. Pulled out the planer boards and lures and pulled them till noon, nothing. Sunday decided late to go I was out of lumber to finish the new front porch and lowes being the only place on sunday to get my stuff, figured hit the water for a few then finish the work. Leave the marina and starting heading towards one of my spots and see a charter captain I know working a closer spot so pull in behind him a half mile or so back and follow him, nothing not even marking a thing, move over and hit it again nothing. Start seeing boats running in and notice how black the sky was west, I look at the charter captain and he isint moving so I stay also. It rained buckets for ten minutes thank goodness I have an cuddy I keep fishing watching the rods from inside. After two trolls not marking fish I run down the lake ten minutes and set up on a schoal, two trolls and mark some fish but no biters, move again and the same marking them but no biters. Off by ten pretty bummed, then home to build the new front stairs.

John, thats a bummer... the guy i went out with was mainly pulling bottom bouncers with worm harnesses but i had a rapala on my one rod and thats the only thing that worked... im definitely interested in trying the night time bite as i hear they come up to the top then. Action looked pretty slow for most boats i saw on saturday.

I too want to try the nite bite,   but I know very little about the lake andam a little nervous.   I do think I will try the little shoal down from  Godfreys at least once though.

John quick questions,  how far is Shackleton shoals from Godfrey launch.  My boat is a little 14 deep V with a 20 horse.   Looking at the map I want to hit it for perch  (hopefully eyes too).   On a nicer day I am going to give it a try, does not look that far off.
I really do not know how good my fish finder is other than for depth.   I do not think I marked 1 fish  out from the launch  when it dropped to 30 plus feet.  when driving around.  Do you think it was the case of no fish there.

clint,
while i'm not trying to sink you but i suggest to get to know your boat and you will gain confidence in your boating skills..Id love to have that rig..
I have a flat bottom 14' jon boat that had a 1955 7.5hp and now a 15hp (I liked the 7.5 better) .. I have taken that thing almost everywhere in most all situations.. Its been on Lake O, Oswego river, Mohawk river and battles the tidal waters of the mighty Hudson, even in the midnight hrs..  Sometimes it seems crazy but I know my skills and limitations..
I truly think your capable and just need a little confidence..
Plus, give those big boats that throw wakes to almost swamp you the 1 finger peace sign as they smoke fat cigars and wave when they drive by ;)

Re:Summer time fishing adventures 2013/06/03 20:23:17 (permalink)
RJ,  I think you are correct.   Before this year I only went to Redfield res, Sacketts and Henderson Harbor and then I stayed in the harbor.    I know the boat pretty well ,  just not the lake.  It is a close to perfect size for 2 guys.   Tows and launches easy.     I do need a bit of more confidence on the  bigger water so I am starting slow and working my way to explore at bit more.  I am learning the Godfrey launch area a bit so it will probably be my first after dark try.

Story about how I got the boat.   I had a REAL deep V Lund Side console.   That and my current boat were in a barn that collapsed under snow.   Got the insurance and bought  a 20 ft Starcraft  I/O had it for 2 years or so   and when gas went to $5  gallon the first time I wanted to sell the Starcraft.  I asked my buddy about the 14 footer and he said he still had it in his  rebuilt barn.   It was a little bowed in one spot  and had a dent in the bottom,   but held water as well before  with only a cup or so an hour leak.  Talked to my buddy and he was the only guy I ever went fishing with.   He had  traded in the 15 horse (that was beat up from the collapse) on a 20 with electric start, but never used the boat in 3 years. We came to an agreement  I fixed the boat  up got it water ready and I sold my Starcraft.   We fished in it a few times,  but his wife had a stroke and he could not go anymore.   He offered to give it to me but I did  not take him up on it.   He is a life long  friend and he has  used it  10 or so  times in last 5 years (all with me )   as he  can never get away.   It is registered to him, and  he offers to sign it over every year, but I know it makes him feel good to have it.  It stays at my house all summer and in his barn all winter  At some point I will get it signed over.

Andy, I have had 3 in it a few times.   Just limits the top speed and for the most part 1 pole per person.

Darned near sunk in a 12 ft flat bottom with a 6 horse Merc on a nice sunny Salt water  day when the wind suddenly picked up while Blue fishin a small inlet.

Never again - went to a 14 Ft high sided side console Fisher with a 40 Merc .It was advertised as a Walleye boat but was GREAT on Blues and Stripers within  a mile or so of shore. Lasted a lotta years too with few repairs
Dont miss it- bought waders and went to SR country.

Clint shackelton is southwest from godfrey, probably 5 miles across and another 3 to for up the lake. The shoal I was refering to is messenger shoal and the bay. My favorite spot to fish is out in front of godfrey, when you leave the launch look straight across the lake and youll see a cell tower aim for it. I troll at 1.0 to 1.2 miles an hour as you get closer to the cell tower start looking to the left or east and youll see blind island another killer spot lake goes from 40 to 3 feet I usually stay aways off as there will be 30 boats and I like the unpressured fish. Back to godfrey, most times i fish in 30 feet west from the launch with you fish finder or if you have a map look for three bowls I call the the water basically is deeper in the center and shallower oround the edges Ill fish that area alot. Just tring to help here another tip I will do if the wind allows is if im marking fish on the bottom and not getting bites I will make passes over them from different directions, sometimes the presentation coming at them from a different angle triggers them. Oneida can get ugly fast Im always watching the sky and other boats if people start running for shore there is usually a reason.

Thanks for the help John, I will try those spots.   Probably about a 20 minute hike to shackleton with my boat as it will go 15 mph maybe a bit faster.  Is it closer from the south shore state launch????   That's one of the main reasons I have not ventured too far from the launch as every time I have went this year there was always a chance for T storms and high winds and do not need a long ride on an ugly lake.  Thanks again man.

I was up at the Cornell Field Station last fall on Schackleton Point, and you can basically see the State Launch from there (there is an island in the way, otherwise you could read the registration numbers with binoculars).  If your concern is the lake kicking up, the south launch has to be a lot closer than running across and up the lake.

Good morning, new member here.
I have been coming up to the river for 20 years for salmon and steel, but have never been up during the summer.
I'm thinking of spending a long weekend up at my camper this summer and was wondering what type of fishing I can do with the flyrod while I'm there.
Thanks for any help.

Swing streamers and larger nymphs...anything buggy with a dead/drag free drift in the AM and late PM... you stand a chance at a smallmouth, atlantic, or steelhead... the bigger flies will keep the smaller creek chubs and salmon/trout fry and smolts away. Cone and beadheads on nymphs and streamers would help in deeper spots. Cover alot of water and you should catch something... goodluck
