Summer time fishing adventures

Thought I would post a new thread to take us through the late Spring and Summer.  Any and all posts are welcome regarding planned and unplanned fishing adventures.  Just something to stoke the fires until silly season begins in the Fall.

I'll be hitting the Upper Delaware with friends for a float trip this Saturday.  Hope the Hendrickson hatch is still on as I'm looking to wrestle with those native Browns of the West Branch.

Enjoy your late Spring and Summer.

I've seen reports with pics of seven to eight pound pigs taken.  The UDR could use some rain but any day out is better than being home.

Pretty much determined to take garden worms and look up some Summer Brookies up around Tug.
Did it all the time around the farm brooks here in CT as a kid and kinda look forward to it up there.
Summer was always decent for them. Heck thats when I always fished em in Scotias little brooks and did well so cant think why Tug would be any different.
Nova Scotia has GREAT Brookie fishing way back in the woods.
      New ground- old phart.
Hit or miss - fish or not--aint even the point. (although a few would be nice)

Don't forget a couple of really tiny rooster tails, use a cigar to trim the hackle back a little.  SOme days they will out fish the garden hackle up on the hill, and they are a lot less hassle and mess.   Anything that runs paralell to County RT 17 and has a stream crossing, or any of the culverts and bridges in the Little John are good.

    Thanks guys-
Fella up at one of the x country places told me that decent Browns are not uncommon up that way- seems the State stocks some of those streams.

Yeah rt mostly browns in the first stocking this year. Not a bad choice in reality as browns are more likely to hold over than brookies

Don't think the 3-5 inch brookies I've caught on the tug were planted.
Not that there isn't stocking going on but those streams are more than clean and cold enough for brookie repo.

Like places that are stocked and are ok for Brookie repro. There are a few -secret- places like that here in Ct.
Nice to catch some eaters and let the wild fish go.
Between a wild budget ride here  and buying and  gut rehabing  another house havent been Turkey huntin or fishing yet. Didnt even bother gettin a Turkey tag.
At some point am gonna have to get up to SR country to at least mow- and hopefully get a day or two to fish.
Even chubs would do it for me right about now.
Tried that 'life of leisure' stuff for a week or so when I retired- not for me -if ya dont keep the main muscle (brain) working ya may as well just curl up and dye

Sorry, those links are not working on my computer, but if you work your way through the fishstocking pages on the DEC website, you find where the hatchery trucks went, and those are minly browns.  Go to the headwaters, brookies.  The other pages are through the State Lands interactive mapper, and lands amf forest pages, and you can find the descriptions of state lands.  Intersect with streams and headwaters, brookies.   If it flows and is not posted (or it is state land), it will have brooktrout up there.

Speaking of stocking I forgot to mention.   A few weeks ago I am driving around up north and saw a DEC stocking truck in a South S parking lot.   It was from Quebec.  Driving through town I saw 2 more.   Anyone know what they were doing around.

Fished the main stem of the Delaware from Callicoon to Damascus this past Saturday.  Fishing was very tough with low water and a high sun.  Water temperature was 68 by mid day.  The hatches that were prolific a few days before were absent.  A few caddis and a couple March Browns but not enough to bring more than a dozen fish to the surface for the entire trip, some of those may have been chubs.  Worked on and caught a small rainbow on a March Brown emerger just after putting in.  Other than a chub that was it for me.

We did see large pods of shad throughout our drift and my buddy did throw dart/flutter spoon combos at them to no avail.  He did manage to take a nice two year old brown on a shad dart, go figure.  He also managed to take a couple of smallies.

Summertime conditions in the first week of May is not a good thing, we need rain!!!

Surprised to hear the Shad are that far up already, just a week ago they were reporting good fishing in Easton Pa,then it dropped like a rock.Used to chase them many years ago but lost interest as the years went by.
I reall hope we get some good tropical depressions over the summer...I don't want a repeat of last years water flows.

Jack,  Reports are that shad are up in the East and West Branch of the Delaware already.  Some of the roe shad we saw had good size to them.

Ahhhhh- budget is over for this year- As Budget Commitee Chair  have been nutso for a while- we managed a tax increase of only .29 of a mill- bout 22 dollars on the average house. Started out looking at 2.5 mills- slashed and burned- and got a smaller leaner Govt. In a budget of well over 200 mil that was a victory. Feelin good about it.
NOW with a whole week off time to get up and mow the lawn veg out with the Lab and do a bit of fishing---
Meetings and fights start again next week- lol.
Cant wait to move into the new house in a coupla months and resign. Retirement ??
     Different town- more possibilities----------

Gerry, awesome water all through there. I always liked fishing below basket creek inlet... nice cold water seem for a few hundred yards below its entry. Late evening hatches usually bring rising fish right near the shore. I also fished calicoon creek itself for years. Had a blast with breeder delly rainbows, stockies and some native brookies here and there. Heard the floods have taken there toll on it in the past ten years though. Its probably been fifteen years since i fished it.

    3fan, wheres waldo?????

Drew-Love the water but if the fish don't cooperate it makes for a long unproductive day.  Would have preferred to start farther upstream around Hankins and Kellam's Bridge but the guides thought because it was Saturday (weekend) that too many boats and wade fishermen would be hitting that stretch of water.
I may take a ride over to the Housatonic later this week.  Haven't decided where, either Bull's Bridge or Cornwall Bridge, both good water.

Drew- The CFS on the East Branch is 162.  While the water temperature remains in the low 60's the flow is ridiculously low for time of year.  We need a good soaker.
