smallmouth caught 4/27
Went up to PIB Saturday 4/27. Only had one bite all day, but it was a 22 inch 6lb 11oz beast of a smallmouth.

I'd like to see more pics of hawg smallies. Anybody have some? They don't have to be new pics.

Not exactly a hawg, but I caught this 4.5# on Saturday on an Erie charter out of Conneaut, OH.

I'm positive there are guys on here with much larger fish but here are a few I had easily accessible: All on artificial and released of course. --------------------- KAYAK ANGLERS OF WESTERN PA www.kayak-anglers.com www.facebook.com/kayakanglers

Thanks for the photos. Keep 'em coming! My God, those are BIG! They don't grow them like that down here. My biggest smallie was 21.5" and 4.5 lb. That was caught out of the Allegheny. I was fishing for steel in Elk in Feb a couple years ago and caught a 17" smallie that weighed 4.5lbs. Football. I might make a trip up to try for one of those pigs.

20"+ river smallies keep me up at night. You aren't missing out on anything if you've yanked them that big out of the river.
To get that big in the Allegheny, you've got to be one mean fish.

Yeah. He was all beat up too. His fins were all cut up. He was a fighter. I was glad to put him back in the water. He deserved it. He was a heck of a fighter. That was the longest and heaviest smallie I've ever caught. I'd like to beat that some day. On a side note, why do some smallies have red eyes, but some don't? I've often wondered about that. I just assumed that hit had something to do with diet.

I've seen people talk about a link between spawning and the red eyes. I don't know for sure though.
The beat up fins are almost certainly due to abrasion against the rocks when building their nest.

I've caught them in August with red eyes, so I'm not too sure about the spawning link. IDK though. Stranger things have happened. I'm a little suprised more folks haven't offered opinions on this. We have a lot of people on these boards that have forgotten more about fishing than I have learned. I was sure someone would have a definite answer. Thanks PA Kayak for the pics and the answers. You really look like you know what you are doing. Those are some pigs man. Keep the pics coming!

Awesome pics guys. I appreciate the posts. They are beautiful fish, but even more beautiful when you recognize how tenacious they are.
