Take a rod with a braid on it. Makes a BIG difference if the bite is lite.

Can be hit or miss, but they try hard to get you on fish. I agree, if you take your own rod make sure it has fireline or some kind of braid on it and I would also recommend sabiki rigs...

make sure you take a wind breaker ., shades, and

All good advice and one thing I would add is take dramamine or somthing like that for anyone that might get sea sick cause once you out there your not coming back for 6 hours. I have seen ppl sit there all day green as grass and not fishin a bit spoil a trip in a hurry.

The local bait shops carry them. I just wanted to show the color and style that has worked for me. These outfish crappie or perch rigs when fished side by side on my boat every time.

+2 on the sabiki rigs too.  If the bite is "off" you will catch more with a sabiki rig (seen it happen a couple times).  If the perch are "on" non of it matters.

PowerPro line and a sabiki rig

Had charter with other guy and he canceled out the night before. Called O'Danny O and they set us up as we were from out of town. We chose to use their equipment to be sure.  After the grandson kept missing bites, Capt Tim set him up with his personal rig, loaded with fireline and 3 green sabicki hooks. used dried salted minnows. Tim said "try this, you can feel them fart" after grandson quit giggiling he almost limited out.  I used it and now that is the set up we use off my son's boat .  A-1 group of guys and we had a great time.

Edward John went out yesterday on their first trip of the year, a scouting trip. Very sucessful! 10 guys and over 450 fish. More than half were white perch, but still lots of big ole yellows.

    fishin coyote,
Did not know that Fish USA carried the sabicki rigs. They must have started carrying them in the past couple of years as I have been buying these for quite a while.  I saw an earlier post with an Amazon link to the product and thought I would give another option....didn't mean to step on anyones toes. I have bought a fair amount of gear from their store on 12th St. over the years.

I agree with the fire line. I'm using it for the first time this year, and what a difference it makes. It's extremely sensitive. I can feel everything my jig touches. I haven't lost many fish so far this year and it's incredibly strong too.

Yep, make sure you get emeralds.  I personally have never had fatheads or goldens out fish emeralds.  If you going on a head boat then you don't have to worry about bait.  That is just for those that go on their own. Personally I like a little stiffer rod too.  I use my 6'6" med./heavy, I think it helps when you have a ounce weight on the bottom of your rig.

Absolutely. I use to use dramamine, but switched to bonine. It's good stuff. Went out on a charter in blue water a number of years ago and one of the guys that I went with spent the first half of the morning leaning over the side.

    True Dat.
I tried Motion Ease. It worked great. It actually reverses the effects of motion sickness.

Hi folks, I'm hoping to take my 6 yr old son out on the Edward John June 25th or 26th. It will be the first time perch fishing Erie for both of us, so other than the braid and Sabiki rigs, what other tackle do I want to make sure that I have?
    Thanks.

LOL! I'm not sayin' it won't work Bill, but I think I'll stick with the Motion Ease. I normally don't get sick either, but every once in a while it gets to me. I'm usually fine until I have to concentrate on tying on a rig or something. Also, going down into the hull of a boat does it to me. I avoid the cabin like the plague.

fishenpreacher- I would take a few extra spreaders  and #6 snelled hooks in case the sabikis aren't working and a few 1oz. bell sinkers for weights.  You'll also need a cooler with ice for your fish and a smaller cooler for your snacks and drinks. AND DON'T FORGET YOUR SUNSCREEN AND CAMARA ! They have a restroom and will clean your fish for a reasonable price and provide the bait (included with your trip fee). They work hard at putting you on fish - either way it will be a memorable trip. Good luck and enjoy the time with your little guy - they grow up way too fast!

I want to share a funny story a few years back I took a fellow fishing up port clinton his name was Lee. there wer 5 of us in my 24 footer. Lee was in navy for quite a few years,I was in marines for 6.Anyhow he kept comenting on how he hauled us marines all over the worlds oceans,he drove a landing craft and it would be a cols day in you now what if he got sick. Well we launched and were maybe 500 yds from the channel mouth and Lee was chuming over the sides then layed in middle of the boat all green and sick as a dog!!!! He was the 1st person I ever turned around and took him in shore anyhow he has been named Chum Lee ever since and hasn't retured !  It can happen happened to me twice 8 year old had to bring in the boat from trenches!!!!!!!!

Ginger Pills, sounds crazy, but they work.  My daughter gets motion sickness, in the car, on the boat.  Since I started giving her two of those about a half hour before, never again.  They are way cheaper than dramamine, and that stuff makes her like a zombie.  I have also given it to other kids that I took out that were already sick and they were fine in 20 min or so.  You can get them at any drug store in the supplement section.

Better too far back, than too far forward.

The ginger pills do work. My wife and I take them all the time, but we start taking them acouple of days before we go and if we are fishing alot we just take all the time as part of the daily routine. Hey, it was proven on Mythbusters

Thanks for the responses guys. Thanks for the heads up on the ginger pills I will definitely give that a try!
We are currently planning on going out on the morning run Wednesday June 26. My boy is already geeked about it and is telling everybody that will listen that "my dad is taking me out on a really big boat on lake erie to catch a bunch of fish!"  I'm looking forward to the experience, especially since  get to do it with my boy.
