Fish Finder Help (Lowrance HDS Systems with Structure Scan)

Hey guys (& gals)  I have the above mentioned system and don't know a single thing about them. While trying to research them the other day I stumbled upon this webpage http://www.doctorsonar.com/store/dvd.html and found that he has model specific DVDs that I think might be very useful, but to get the the 4 that I would like to view it's kinda expensive.

Understanding Sonar & Interpreting the Display DVD $29.99
Lowrance HDS Educational DVD $29.99
Lowrance HDS Advanced DVD $29.99
StructureScan DVD - Understanding SideScan and DownScan $19.99

I was wondering and hoping if I could get a couple of guys to agree to a group purchase where we could view them and send them over to the next participant.

@ Blue Lagoon, I bought the system used and it didn't come with the owner's manuals.  Yes I've found them available on the web but its all too technical and 'm not the reading type.

Everytime I hit the water with the intentions of trying to figure the darn thing out, I feel guilty that I don't have a line in the water trying to catch a fish.

Put your lines in the water first...
Those manuals are enough to make a man drink, I've always had better luck just figuring them out as I go...

And it always will be until you dig into it.  That means reading your manual and then googling terms that you aren't familiar with...or Youtube it.  IMO youtube in concert with personalized searches would help you more than a video series.  It's a bit intimidating at first, but learn how to set your sensitivity, depth ranges, be able to see your position on gps, etc., then worry about tweaking those settings and fine tuning your understanding while you are on the water.  It's just one of those things you have to force yourself to learn....or learn to live without it.

I had an HDS-7 with the structurescan on my StarCraft Islander and the book made me dizzy on the boat trying to read and monkey with the unit. Did a ton of research & googling and decided heck with it, sold my boat with the unit and bought a 20' Lund Superfisherman. Did more research and bought the Humminbird 1198 that had all the bells and whistles and no regrets! So much easier to operate & the manual is simple to read if need be and a ton of insight on youtube and pros on facebook and other forum communities if I ever have any questions.

Some good information there.  After browsing a bit...it looks like these specific areas would be of help:

mrman, keep in mind that although the different HDS units (HDS5, HDS7, 8 etc.) have different ways to view the menu system, the menu systems and settings pretty much all work the same way.  So if there is a help topic or tutorial for, let's say an HDS 7, then most other units will get set the same way.  Also, HDS 8-10 have "hot keys" right on the front of the unit to access commonly used functions where HDS 7 and below you have to use the <PAGES> button to scroll to the area you want to adjust and then hit the <menu> button to access the settings for that area.  That is assuming you don't have the latest touchscreen units.

Excellent, exactly right, I forgot to mention that, my HDS-7 didn't have some of the fctns the 8-10 had. But I too was a frequenter on bass boat central boards.

Worth a shot...  Cool looking electronics.  Hope you are able to figure it out.  If not, I know someone with one of those Eagle Fishmark's that everyone is raving about.  I can throw in a Comadore 64 if you want to upgrade on the graphix...
