Pine Creek Trout Fishing
WOW. This is the first time I have ever fished this creek and came out without a bite. Water color was good, temperature was perfect, flow was adequate, but no fish. My fishing experience on this creek is 15 to 20 years and about 10 to 15 times per year. I hope this is not indicative of the lack of fish being stocked so we can bolster the PA Fish and Game Commission’s pensions. I hope not, but feel this is the case. My sons will need to take up another sport. Bill

I hit pine on friday and did well from j and t down to rockys on rooster tails. I can tell you there is a 20 inch palomino there I caught and released but all other trout didnt even seem to be 7 inches very small and plenty of little smallmouths.

I agree tire-iron. There is not near as many fish as years past. I fished it Saturday and Sunday, got a few, but nowhere close to the numbers as usual. Deer creek is even worse!

I can attest to that, I hit numerous sections of that creek and came away with very few. They stock again soon so we'll see what happens

The PFBC has publicly announced the reduction in numbers of fish stocked time and time again over the last few years, so no real surprises. I don't think it's a reason to give up fishing though. There are still plenty of wild fish around, including trout.

fish ink agreed, by no means give up or stop fishing for trout, personally I really like just going out and exploring the streams and getting to the least fished places. I just wish I had more time to fish! ha

I agree with the past two posts. The world doesn't revolve around stupid fake fish that get delivered by white truck. Stocked trout are for the opening day wanna be trout fishermen lol(coming from someone who does fish for stockies occasionally). NOOO need for your sons to stop fishing. Get them into other species such as bass of any variety, cats, panfish, pike, musky, walleye, real trout, anything. And it's not all about the catching. I've had days where are caught fish after fish, but then there were some days I enjoyed much more and only caught 5 or less. It's the whole experience. Get out in the woods and walk along a stream, explore some back bays on a lake, enjoy the wildlife and the fresh air. Just being outside and getting away from it all is enough to me. If they quit stocking trout, I'd still buy my license(non-res actually which is expensive, live only 15min from the border) every year.

1st, Thanks for the replies guys. 2nd, Troutguy. This was a TROUT link. Not bass, walleye, pike, etc. So if you think I never fished for other variety of fish, you are mistaken. I have been taking in the whole fishing experience for 50+ years, but do expect more for the fee I pay for the yearly license and yes, stocked trout is one of them. I know I have explored more streams, rivers, and lakes than you can imagine. As for my sons and their children fishing, the PA Fish and Commission will price themselves OUT of the Market! Consumers only pay for value, and in my feeling this is not a bargain by any means. Let’s get trout back in the water in the spring. If the PA Fish and Commission pensions are an issue, let them pay for it themselves, like the rest of us!

I realize that, but what I was getting at is you(or whoever else) shouldn't stop taking their kids fishing because of the lack of stocked trout(when there's a bunch of other species to catch, and still even wild trout). That's what it sounded like anyways in your OP, that your kids should find a new sport because of the lack of stocked trout. I apologize if you took it the wrong way, or if I took it the wrong way. Yeah, with less and less trout stocked every year we feel we are being cheated of our money at times and I completely understand, but again it shouldn't stop parents from getting their kids into the sport. The more youth involved in fishing, the better. We do pay a fee for stocked trout, and yes we may get upset because of the lack of fish at times, but think about all the other stuff our license money pays for. Warmwater stockings, public access, stream/lake improvements, different programs, a bunch of stuff. I don't know about everyone else, but I am happy to pay the amount of money I pay for a license and I won't let the price or the lack of stocked trout stop me from buying a license nor should it stop anyone else who loves to fish. PA Fish and Commission will price themselves OUT of the Market! Consumers only pay for value, and in my feeling this is not a bargain by any means.
Unfortunately yes this is happening, but it SHOULDN'T. In my opinion(again, my opinion) it is a bargain to me. Paying 60 bucks(or whatever the exact price is with stamps and such) to have the ability to fish for whatever I want wherever I want across the state(public access of course) and enjoy the outdoors is well worth the money, especially if you're fishing at least once a week like myself. If you truly like to fish, it's a no brainer, but to the people who only fish a few times a year if that they might stop buying licenses(which I know is a bad thing). The trout stocking program won't stop me from fishing, and I won't let that stop my kids from fishing. And fwiw, I've been doing pretty good with stocked trout for the past two months in a bunch of streams, although I personally haven't fished Pine, but everywhere I have fished I was able to catch a bunch. Can't speak for everyone else.

I did very well fishing DHALO's in March and early April. But most of those waters are capable of holding fish over from previous seasons and even have some wild reproduction. I think the places hardest hit by the cuts in stocking are the smaller, warmer streams like Mingo, Pine, Bull, etc., especially when they can only hold fish for a short while. Unfortunately, that's the only kind of fishing a lot of people (especially younger ones) ever get around to. One of my favorite streams in Western PA was taken off the stocking list recently but it wasn't a big deal for me. I was actually happy about it, even though I've caught 4 and 6 pound trout there in the past, because it will give the natives in the stream a much better shot.
