Behemoths in Greenlick?
I spent many summer afternoons as a kid fishing from the shore at greenlick. In that time ive caught some nice bass and a few carp in the 10 lb range, but its always seemed to me theres got to be some huge fish in that water. I remember years ago when the fish commission did a survey of the lake but the nets didnt catch much of anything noteworthy. Also remember someone on here telling me about catching flatheads at night but i wont fish there myself after dark because of the ashsoles that frequent it. Anyway my question is has anyone pulled anything massive out of there? Stories or better yet pics would be great.I dont know why but theres just something about that place that males me believe theres got to be a monster or two in there.

Jug, for the record I have personally caught several 15 pound carp out of Greenlick, two were caught fishing in early March when I was fishing for eyes with small(4-5in) creek chubs during the day. I've also caught some 22+ inch walleyes there and returned them, always CPR there. As for flatheads I only landed one and it was 27 pound. It was returned to fight another day. Several bass in the 5+ range and many in the 10 to 18 inch range. Have also caught a couple of toothy critters from 28 to 36 inch. Hope that answers some of your questions. The flathead was caught on a night crawler while flippin for bass. The above information occured over several years.

What kind of a-holes are there at night. I want to start fishing it at night this summer. Just wondering what I should look out for. I don't fish alone not out of fear just not fun so I am not really worried about anything.

Ive always heard bad things about the people that place seems to attract. The one and only time i tried to night fish it some guys in a truck were heckling another fisherman on the other side of the lake, taunting him "Im gonna come down there and kill you." Probably drunks leaving the local bars. Id get a gun permit before i go there at night again.

Drugs, and other things. Then, the tax rock chuckers come and really make it dangerous. Seriously though, it has been cleaned up some. I still would never take my kids there at night and I still have not fished it at night myself. If you have a chl, I'd probably have your carry weapon on you if you fish it at night.
Was there Thurs. Evening with the family and there was two state cops bsing up on top of the hill above the main parking lot/swings.

Yes as said before, there are some really nice fish in there. Structure is hard to find butI think the fish hold tight to the bottom or close to the deep shorellines opposite the ramp and move a little more at night. I have caught a few nice Walleyes in the 22 or 23" range, real nice Bass...not good with weights but in the 20" range. I have heard about the big Flathead Wally spoke of and I believe in the bait shop that used to be there was a picture years ago. I have caught some nice Channels over 20 inches. Fishing at night anywhere anymore is becoming risky. I have a carry permit and use it everyday, everywhere. I carry a Taurus Judge and a 9mm Glock. I usually holster my Judge within view and that keeps creeps at a safe distance. Just get lonely because even the good guys get nervous and don't get close. As@^$%es throw rocks I'll throw lead. I don't fish it much from shore 99% of the time from boat unless I'm Bluegill fishing for Catfish bait. Anytime anyone wants to go I'll be glad to partner up, shoreline or boat. I'm 15 minutes away.

Weather permitting I'll fish at night by myself for eyes and bass primarily. Have had drunks, pot heads or just plain idiots scream at me and yell obsenities but have never actually been involved in any type of altercation. One night I observed several guys and a female brutalize another guy. Beat him bad and I started to yell at them from about fifty yards in the dark, at that they pulled the guy into one of the cars and left. Gave a partial plate # and car description to Mt Pleasent police but never heard or read anything about it. If it be a lake, stream or river after dark it woul be wise to carry legally.

Just a head up to you guys who may not be 21 but are 18, you can get a hunting, fishing, and dog training carry permit. Not a concealed carry, but it does allow you to at least carry when you do one of the above. Very nice if you are fishing in a sketchy area, or an area filled with bears, either or

I carry ALL the time. The events in Boston proved to me that you never know not that a gun would do anything to stop a bomb. Hell, I have one in my pocket when I am in Wal-Mart. Last year I was in Mt. Pleasant an hour after the guy was stabbing at people and stabbed the cop with scissors near Tractor Supply. Places like that or restaurants, I carry a Ruger LCP. Not very big but, better than nothing and doesn't cause a scene. I have a Glock 40 and my brother has a Judge. Does anyone know if it is legal to carry open while fishing or does it have to be concealed? I fished at Donegal up until dark and nobody bothered me.

The license I have, only being nineteen, is for fishing and hunting and it has to be open carry, if you have a concealed, I don't know if you can open carry? You might have to look into that one.

Yeah, I'll have to check into it. Like Youghmon said, Something bigger in view tends to keep the creeps away a little more. There are a few places near Pittsburgh that I'd like to try but not sure if it is worth the risk. It's a pretty bad area. Don't want to end up making the evening news for a few fish. My cousin works on the river there and has seen some big fish. I'll wait until I get a boat for places like that.

Yes you can carry it out in view while fishing. Not in Schools or government buildings and a few other places I probably don't even go to. I always carry near Pittsburgh, my daughter works there. When driving they are out in the open so I can get to them quick. Car jackers aren't on my list of model citizens.

I read somewhere awhile back that the police were gonna step up patrols. Like I said before, doesn't matter to me cause I am my own police. I am not gonna take stupid behavior from people when I am just minding my own business fishing. My nieces boyfriend and I fished Turtle Creek this morning. I caught one and he caught four. His one was a really nice one. Big fat bodied trout. Other than a couple guys that were a little ignorant and they think I didn't see or hear them, it was a nice day.

No big ones in there they are all really small..lol. Law enforcement has a very strong presence there. I have heard lots of stories about the place, but after fishing there a lot I have never experienced a single problem. I get my fishing license checked every other time I am out there it seems.

I've been in some hairy situations while night fishing too, though it's not the norm. You don't need a permit to carry a firearm in Pennsylvania as long as it's out in the open. You do need one to carry a concealed firearm or "open carry" while in a vehicle. So if that's what you want to do, lock it up on the way to the lake and then wear it on your hip while fishing. Greenlick is a pretty good body of water that holds a great range of species. I know that there are a few giants in there, but unless I lived nearby I wouldn't travel there specifically for that reason. It still quite a good place to fish.

I live very close, anyone have tips for this lake or the bridgeport dam? As a kid i just always fished below the spillway on jacobs creek and always caught massive carp & cats. Seen a big tiger muskee too right below the falls about few years ago.

At Greenlick, I never did any good over by the rocks where the people have picnics. I have fished other parts of the lake and did pretty good fishing for panfish. Caught a few 12"-14" Largemouth. I like it because it is fairly close to me. I have never wet a line at Bridgeport but i'd like to start fishing it this year. I myself was wondering what species are in Bridgeport.

I know bridgeport been getting a yearly stocking of tiger muskie since 2004 and when I was younger my buddy cought a 24" large mouth where the water pours out of the dam using a live bluegill. Just last weekend another buddy of mine cought the biggest yellow perch ive personally seen, beautiful colors, and another cought a decent size large mouth. I fished it for muskie this past week with no luck but I havent been using live bait only 4-5 inch lures.

I've always wondered how the muskie fishing was at bridgeport. Seems like they stock the crap out of it. I've gone blue gill fishing there for catfish bait and done well on 4-6"ers. seen some smallish carp and lm cruising around too. I've heard there's some channel cats in there too but only targeted them for a few hours one day with no luck from shore. It's a really neat lake with all the peninsulas. I've caught some small crappies there too. Plenty of muskie food in that lake. And not allot of fishermen.

Last spring, I found a 42" dead muskie below Bridgeport Dam. I've seen some pics of some real big ones coming out of the lake too. I guess that explains where all the little fish went.

Thanks for the information on Bridgeport. I really thought there would be more, bigger fish there, especially musky for the number that have been stocked there.

The survival rate for fingerlings is very low for Musky & Eyes, combine that with the fact that Tiger Musky do not reproduce, it is not too surprizing. Also the fact that Bridgeport has so much unaccessable shoreline & relatively few boat fishermen does not help' I think that the Musky that are caught below the old dam came up from the Yough & are few & far between. I was told that a few guys caught some Musky fingerlings & put them alive in Greenlick. The PF&BC bioligist told me that they have not stocked any Musky in Greenlick in the approx.20yrs that he has been in this area. sam

Then I guess the toothy critters I've caught in Greenlick over the years must have been northerns.

We have caught Northerns every spring for the last 15 yrs that I have fished it,but never more than a few. I guess after spring they go to the deeper water & are hard to catch from shore. I would guess that there is limited reproduction from Northerns ,but we never caught any" hammer handles". sam

posted on another topic but it applies here as-well and is lengthened Its been a few years since ive seen a real big cat come from there, ppl always used to get them while i would be riding bikes by the bridge. Theres also another hole up from the falls the Basingers showed me growing up. Its across from cherry lane. Theres even a swamp at the end of cherry lane we used to stock w baitfish. One year it dried up and we discovered it was home to some ridiculous sized catfish/carp, wonder if any were able to survive in the small water pool that was left. Maybe all the big fish are gone but there always seemed to be alot only a few years ago.
