21 lb Steelhead

This forum has certainly hit the skids, I guess. Not one post about a 21 lb. record steelhead caught at 20 mile?  And the fact that the guy caught it his first time trying to catch a steelhead, and didn't get it certified.

Wow I just saw the picture, that is by far the biggest steelhead I have ever seen. This spring has seriously been one for the record books when it comes to spring steelheading and I can't say that I am surprised given that most of the steelhead I have been catching the past few weeks have been pretty good size. Well if I compare them to the 21 pounder they are pretty small. Either way this spring has definitely been my best spring for PA steelhead fishing ever.

First I will say nice fish!!!!!!
Bigger than anything i caught in PA !!!!!!
Congrats to the lucky fisherman and I give him a big thumbs up on having a humble attitude about the catch!
But 34 and 3/8 inches thats a short fish for 21 lbs.
My biggest was ever was in NY it was 43 1/2 inch fat hen (shaped just like this one)and it weighed 19.5 on every scale it was weighed on(3 total).
Maybe this was a misprint and it was 43 and 3/8 iches-but I think the fish is closer to 3 than 4 ft.
If you look at pic notice the way it is being held out towards the camera away from body.
A great catch but I think there is a reason his experienced freind did not make him takit in for official weigh in!Maybe an reporter looking for a story that wasn't really there........

It 's a great fish and I agree it was a great spring for big fish in eri tribs.......

Com' on "jimmy 2 sh..s" and "Krott..."how big is this one.

I really hate to be skeptical, but that's a good point. If the fish is 34" he's holding it way out and it doesn't look fat enough to be 21 lb. If its a typo and its 43" he's holding it close to his body, and its huge. My biggest is a measly 31" and was 10 1/2 lb on a cheap scale. 3 more inches and not grotesquely fat doesn't seem to double the weight. I could certainly be wrong, but a girth measurement would have helped.

I think its possible. I caught a 31 inch, 14 and half pound female on Oct. 31. I could not believe the certified scale said it was that heavy because it was not very long.

I'd like to see a few pictures of a 43" Steelhead never saw one that long out of the Great Lakes ! My buddy got a 18 lber that was around 36 " out of N.Y. This fish looks big but I'd like to see a few more photos not holding it way out with one hand. I'm not totally convinced yet . There are too many photos doctored up on the internet today either they are somewhere else or it's just "one photo". Just me.......................Nice catch if it's all real.

Here is the current record steelhead, only 36 inches, could definitely be 21 because this thing doesn't really look 20 pounds either

Great looking fish for sure!  The existing record was 36.5 L with a 21.5 girth.  Plugging it in to a calculator, that works out to be 21.09 lbs(listed weight is 21 lb).  Using the same calculator with this fish at 34.375 L(no girth listed) it would have to have a 22 1/8 girth to be 21.03 lbs.  No good reference point in the picture to attempt photometric analysis, but it looks possible.  Looks like we will never know!  Still a hog!

I have no problem with the reported weight. This guy was not bragging , didnt care and and has no reason to embellish the weight. I have landed many steelhead in the 32 to 37 inch range and know how much they weigh. Fish was 21 lbs......WF

WF...don't get me wrong, I am with you.  Simple fact that he didn't care to me means he has no  reason to lie.  I simply ran it through the calculator to see what it would say.  It didn't come up with any impossible numbers so I hope the nay-sayers accept the weight.  I do find it funny sometimes how important it becomes to people to have proof.  It doesn't matter to me(or the vast majority of you) since I didn't catch it nor was it my record being broken.  All I can do is say conratulations on a nice fish and I hope he realizes they won't all be like his first one!!

I got to say after some thought and looking at pic again, looking at pic of current recorder holder, and reminding myself tha these Eri fish are built a little different then the NY fish(Eri fish seem to be thicker)it could be 21lbs.
I also need to call myself out on a mistake my fish was 42.5 inches not 43.5 inches(had it written down on old pic.)fishermans imagination I do have!
It took some digging but I found a digital copy of pic of my fish from NY it was taken on one of those silly cameras you put film in.I only have 2 pics of it and this is the best one.
I know I will read all kind of skeptical comments but Whatever I WAS THERE you are just looking at a pic.The fish was LONGGGGGGGGGG it looked like a king salmon not a steelhead in the water. For reference when looking at pic I stand 6ft 1 in and average baseball cap is 6 in wide.Just for my entertainment can anyone name the guide in the pic with me.
Captain Hook asked for it so here it is for all your entertainment............flashback to 2002!

I caught and released a 37" male on Elk a couple years ago and it was thicker than that fish,if his was 21 lb,I doubt that, that male was ?????.Why did n't I keep that fish you ask? It's simple,I don't keep any fish on the tribs, too much of a hassle and they don't taste that great.

Very nice fish WCW ! N.Y. fish had that long strain years back while Erie had the fat and sassy strain. Ohio has some wide girth shorter fish also. That's the longest Steelhead I've ever seen and looks to have a thick tail area to show that weight is justifiable. Nice photo..............here is a Lake Ontario Steelie I took years back on a friend"s boat no doubt the Skaminia strain long and full of good jumps. This fish was 35 " and around 14 lbs.

Yeah thanks yal' it was one long Steelie and I am still trying to beat it.
This thread kinda made me replay that day through my head,I was just starting to fish for steelhead after chasing Salmon up there a few years(its an addictive atmosphere to fish in PULASKI) if you have not spent time up there give it a try expect crowds but there is a reason for most crowds.Anyways I fight this fish knowing it was LARGE by the battle I was having after 5-10 minutes I get it close to shore(I was wading at that point but drift boat was parked close).
The guide was just standing there next to boat coaching me the whole time smiling.
I yell to him GET THE NET he just looked at me and said-NO beach it like a man you do not need a net!I was kinda ****ed but did what he said and it worked just fine.
Ever since I do not carry a net and just laugh at the guys who carry them around, sure there have been a few times I could have used 1 but  I will not ever carry one for steelied in tribs.

Yes everyone that saw said it was skamania.....
Captain Hook nice lake chrome there I have caught a few of its twins in the Staicase SRNY they too did some juming as they ripped line off my reel.

I think the numbers of Lake Eri steelhead being lower last few years has produced bigger fish personaly I like it and I feel I have a chance of hooking a record fish anytime I hit the tribs.
