19 April – The lake elevation is 894.62 feet; approximately summer pool level (894.67). This morning it is cloudy and 69 degrees. The water temp on Monday morning was 43 degrees. Sluice gates 2, 4 & 6 are open 1 foot each at the dam. The downstream water level was 3.08 feet. For daily lake information call 724-962-4384. Fished below dam yesterday and managed 12 trout,1 perch,1 bluegill. I used olive caddis. My brother did well with spinners and caught two goldens and 18 other trout.
They stocked at the bridge but not at the dam. Dumped a load of trout there. Good luck and wade safe.

Was there yesterday at the outflow with my girlfriend and buddy after a wasted Pymie trip.  Caught about 25 trout (Assorted bows and browns.) 2 small wipers and a few panfish.  Highlight was a cast into the plume and drift and something Large slender and brownish hooked up and ran me for about 5 minutes.  I was assuming it was a Musky for the size and brownish color but it could have been a large pike.  Anyone know of any Musky in Shenango?  Needless to say I wasn't expecting the fishing to be as great as it was.

I think my record is 7 species in one day from the Shenango, and I've caught more than 7 out of there(but not in one day).  One of the best multispecies fisheries I know of.

I've caught them both out of there.  Pike far outnumber the 'skis, but they're in there.

I fished it for a little bittoday.  Wasn't really planning on fishing at all today because of a long day of steelheading yesterday(cross the border and you'll find the fishies) but I just had to get out today since the weather was nice.  Nothing crazy but I caught a handful of trout.  And I reminded myself of why I rarely fish it in the month of April.  It was packed.

How do you go about running a drift at that dam and what do you use?

I was up on the wall (no waders this trip) and I just hucked it into the gate plume and let the current drift it. Probably could drift with a floating jig head too but I didn't have any. Just inprovised. Pretty hard to avoid snagging on the low head dam at the end of the outflow pool with that current I got hung up a few times.

what is the "low head dam at the end of the outflow pool" you speak of?
I have always wondered what the underwater topography was like next to the wall..

Maybe he means that underwater thing that crosses the river in the outflow pool????  I guess it can resemble a lowhead dam, but it's entirely underwater.

That's what I am talking about.  I don't know if they have a name or not but I always refer to it as a lowhead dam (best description to me at least)  Aside from the obvious it's under water.   And B****1990 they were mediums from what the price/title at the bait shop was.

That's the current breaker wall. Keeps the bottom from being gouged out from all the pressure building from the outflows. It goes across the dam end to end and is completly under water. Yea it will snag up the best gear you got ! Very deep on the oppisite side.

Very deep on which side? I assume the dam side but the water doesn't seem that deep right over the edge, unless I'm very easily mislead which is possible. I was assuming only 3-5' depth for the whole pool but I guess I'm wrong. I'm really curious now. I guess it would have to be fairly deep to hold trout and other species that don't tolerate very warm water well...

I don't know how it is today but a few years back the outflow was very low. I waded up to the wall that was almost sticking above water and stuck my six and a half foot rod over the other side of the wall and did not touch bottom! Don't know how much deeper it was or if it is still as deep just know that's what it was that trip. I have seen a few dummies actually stand on that wall and fish. There was only one drowning at the Shenango sluices that I remember in my 50 years of fishing there. There are metal grab rigs by every sluice if one would fall and get swept in they might save your life if your lucky. Beware wading up close the underwater rocks get much larger and harder to wade in .

Last year I saw a few gentleman standing on the wall. I myself wouldn't. And I wondered what those ring/chains were... I thought it was for when the core would clean major debris from the pool so they could tie off... All I know is I think that's my favorite place I've fished at in Western Pa.

Ugh... Hoping they close one or 2 of those gates by Saturday heading up for the weekend and that's going to ruin me if it's that order.
Ty for the report Mika as well.

you want 3 feet gage height
anything less is too low. with all the osprey and eagles down there, shallow water is no good

That's understandable but when you are fishing from the wall and they have gate 1 open it kinda ruins things quickly.  I have the gear and such to wade it but saving that for when they have 1 maybe 2 gates open before I walk around seeing as I'm unfamiliar with the underwater topography right up near the dam I don't want to have any accidents.  lol

Was there Saturday afternoon/evening and Sunday till about 2pm and caught about 30 trout, 20 White bass/Wipers a slab crappie and couple gills.  Got to see them cut the outflow discharge back and an Osprey fishing too.  Also met some of the folks who seem to frequent the area.  All in all was a nice weekend trip aside from no eyes at either Pymie or Shenango.
