Docto,We were talking about Approved Trout Waters open to year round fishing such as Twin Lakes. On page 13 of this yrs. digest at the bottom right,it states the permit is NOT required unless a person takes ,kills ,or possess while in the act of fishing, a Trout or Salmon. I may be wrong ,but that is the way that I read it.  sam

The carp were jumping all over the place at upper twin today, I will be up there tonight after work trying for one

Yesterday afternoon I saw 2 guys lose a carp apiece,1 almost almost lost a rod. Again to-day I saw 2 breakoffs which I assume were carp also by the way they hit & took off before thse guys could react. This was at the upper lake & both were hooked on Powerbait. I have not lucked into one yet,but they are on the prowl.  sam

I do very good with rice....
use a 28oz box of minute rice,24oz bottle of catchup,16oz of pinapple juice.....
I use a play mate cooler...dump the dry rice in the cooler... In a bowl mix the juice and catchup very well and heat in microwave for 3 minutes mix again and add it to the dry rice and mix it VERY GOOD!!! Let it set for at least 2 hours before you go fishing.....
I put a small split shot 2 inches form the hook and use corn pops for the hook DO NOT LOOSEN THE RICE SCRAPE WHAT YOU NEED A LITTLE AT A TIME.... Put the rice in your hand put the pop in the middle and pack it tight it will break in 3 to 5 minutes....re bait every 15 to 20 minutes.....Carp love this stuff........I pay lake fish ALOT and have won lots with this bait....Good luck.....

I had moderate success today with my first attempt at a pack bait. Cream corn, ground roasted salted soy beans, corn meal, wheat germ, bread crumbs, cornstarch. 6 runs, missed 3 landed only one and lost 2 near shore in about 3 hrs. Not too bad for my first carp trip of the year the day after a strong cold front. The bait packed nicely around bank sinkers and egg sinkers, a good sized hunk was reduced to about half in a half hour. So I'm trying to find a way to make it break down a little faster, but it's a good start I'd say. i wanted to put some oats in but didn't have any around, I think the more coarse grain may have helped. Had 4 kernels of sweet corn for the hook bait, on a hair rig.

you could try adding boiled millet to your pack bait mix. It makes mine break up in about 10 minutes, with the added benefit of giving the fish some particles to nom on. Can't go wrong with a few scoops of hemp protein powder either.

Will do thanks for the insight. I would have left out the corn starch too, but it was pretty wet. Is cornstarch helpful you think? Or should I leave it out of the next batch if I can get the consistency right without it.

Just finished making my second batch. Similar recipe, but with a bunch of parakeet feed with millet being the primary ingredient. Also hemp seed papaya, strawberries, oats, soybean meal, and a bunch of other stuff. Will post results eventually.

I like using corn starch in my hook baits. Not so much in my pack bait. Vanilla is my all-time favorite early season flavor. I usually switch to fruity flavors during post-spawn. That's just what works where I fish.

I have been fly fishing for carp in May-July on the Three Rivers within Allegheny County for a few years now.  It is intense on a fly rod when sight fishing for them, they fight like redfish down in Florida.  Find a mulberry tree and when the berries start dropping, they gorge in schools.  It is some of the funnest times there are.

Any simple purple yarn pattern.  ex: http://cdn.stripersonline.com/a/a0/a07628bd_vbattach367617.jpg

Google image search mulberry fly pattern and you will see some shinier stuff that looks like sucker spawn/crystal meth steelhead flies.  Simple works great too.

The carp were very active yesterday at Donegal.  Got 4 with the biggest going 33", must have been close to 20lbs or so.

Finding a mulberry tree hanging over a river is about as good as it gets for carp. You can use a glo bug or sucker spawn pattern with purple yarn and get hook up after hook up.

Docto, a long time favorite of mine has always been oats and cinnamon molded onto the hook with water or liquid flavoring. Ill give yours a try but what is the purpose of the oatmeal mded onto the sinkers? Is that so it breaks away amd creates chum?

After 4 straight days of fishing at twin lakes i finally got my first carp of the year. Not a big guy but it was nice to finally get one.

Jug, I can almost always catch a couple at that spot on corn. You can almost always see them jumping to the left of you.   sam

Jug that's right about the bait on the sinker. A mini chum pile right by your hook bait is the idea. Google pack bait, or method bait.

The gulp floating corn is really good stuff. Even if I'm using dough or boilies, I slip a piece or two on the hair. It makes any bait a semi-buoyant bait. The carp, in the places I fish, can't leave it alone.

Does anyone know if the spawn has begun yet? I never payed much attention to these patterns but im trying to improve my carping skills more than anything this year so im taking in everything i can. Slayed them at bridgeport the past few weekends but no size to them so im back at twin lakes today trying to hook into a behemoth. Hows everyone elses carping been lately?

Flyingmoles, i gave the gulp corn a try but no luck with it yet. Gonna keep trying it though.

Re:Carp fishing in April 2013/05/19 07:18:42 (permalink)
Bridgeport has been pretty crappy this year. The biggest I've gotten from there this year has been a 9lb mirror. I didn't notice any spawning going on yet. I'm kinda guessing that those few cold days may have pushed the spawn back a little.

When I use the gulp corn. I just use 1 piece with a dough ball or boilie. It's enough to make your bait sway in the water but not quite float. The carp loved it last year. I haven't gotten to use any yet this year.

I attend college out in greensburg and my buddy and I did really well down on the lower lake of twin lake using corn.  We caught four in about an hour one was about 15 pounds, that was the biggest one we caught.  Later that week we tried the upper lake and didnt have nearly as much success we caught a catfish and a small turtle.

My pack bait is working well. Fished some new water on the Mon in the rain today. Landed these fish, had one break my 30lb leader on a piling, and lost one more in a snag. I think the biggest was about 15 lb I couldn't close my fingers around it's tail and I can palm a basketball. His first run was about 50yds.

Hi,
nice carps i'm seeing here.
I read allot of you are fishing for carp with the flyrod.
I started to do that a year or 2 ago.
I only know good floating fly's to do that.
Do you guys also fish with a sinking fly?
And if so do you know a good sinking fly to do that?

greetings from a Belgian fisherman ;-)

Carp flies. http://www.flycarpin.com/p/flies-for-carp.html?m=1 there's several nice patterns on here. It's important to tailor the weight of the fly to the depth you are fishing. I wouldn't use more than bead chain eyes or a few lead wraps if the water is under 3' where you're targeting them. Also, some people swear that you should not use any glue or head cement on carp flies, as these odors will scare off fish. I don't know how much truth there is to it though.
