Sure looks more like shad than smolts. What do ya think?

Most look too thick for shad, I'm guessing a mix of shad and smolt...

Curiosity killed the cat, but for awhile I was a suspect.

Most of those are probably the ones my crew gut hooked and tried to revive and release yesterday at Trout Run.  Kept tellin them to throw 'em in the woods, but they insisted on trying to revive them.  Now everybody's gonna be in a panic.

The ones washing up in Erie are a combination of 2 types of fish. One is the Gizzard Shad and the other are Alewifes ( which are a species of shad ). The Alewifes are commonly mistaken for mooneye.

The Gizzard shad get much larger that the alewifes. Alewifes are about the same size as smolt. Gizzard shad get as big as Small Mouth bass.

when I was a kid back in the 60's, my dad and his friends would go down to the dock and shovel up buckets of mooneyes and boil them down to get the fish oil out of them. They would fill jars with minnows and savored them with the fish oil. While no one else was catching perch off of the South Pier, we would be walking away with our limits. The boiled down fish would then go into my Grandfather's tomato gardens.

I do have one more question,  are these Crescent Mooneyes? If so, Waxing or Waning?  Although, when you look at the information at hand, one might figure that these just may be Mooneye playing Possum....

This huge Mooneye kill is an event that took place in the Battle of Presque Isle Bay.  The Sunfish from Walnut Creek Marina invaded the bay this January, and "lit up" the Mooneye's world.  I believe this is when the names MOONeye and SUNfish were given to these two very interesting species.

Coldfront...You ask     what is the difference between a MOONeye and a SUNfish?
About 12 hours ...... give or take a few.

You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

I better start fishing or these Mooneye.  I only catch 8 lb Small Mouth.  They only bite on Lead Balls and Trebble hooks.

If you guys were wondering,  Smolt and Smelt do eat well. Cook them under the Moon and keep a good eye on them. We once cooked Smolt over an open fire. Smelt great.
