Joe's Flies

Does anyone use Joe's Flies with the spinner blade for trout? Any hints on how to fish them. A friend of mine keeps telling me he has always had good luck with them. I have never heard of them until recently. Do they work in lakes or do they only work best in moving water? I have always used rooster tails with good results although last year I failed to catch one fish on them.

I use them in lakes and streams with the spinners.  I found that a split shot about 1'-16" from the knot is key when using 6# line for the #0/1 blades.  It keeps the line lower then the spinner to make it actually spin.  I've never had a ton of luck just pitching them unless letting them sink prior to retrieve.  In the past two trips to Mammoth my girlfriend caught 5 in about 2hrs while tossing a brown bugger type with 2 BB splits in the aforementioned area.  And on Good Friday I managed 2 on Olive/brown buggers with the same set up either fish them at a slow crank or a fast retrieve usually yields the best results...  They work well for Steelhead too just the "Super Strikers" I have had good success with.  I was always a Meeps spinner fan, Joe's Flies have their time and place like any other bait.  My only real advice and don't take this as a negative to them is put them in a good case with rust protection (Flambeau w/Zerust or the Plano with all the small holes) or keep them out in the air to let them dry or they will rust and become compromised.  But, aside from they work very well with and without the spinners.

When I fished for trout yrs. ago the Hildebrandt spinner flies were my choice over the Joe's.
Give 'em a try , been around for over 100 yrs for a reason.

They're very good for trout. Only problem is they don't cast very far unless you're using very light line or split shot as mentioned above. They do work well weightless, just have to have a long light rod w light line. I have better luck a them in lakes personally. Reel them just fast enough to get the blade spinning. Or use a slow twitchy erratic retrieve.

We started using joe flies in the mid 70's at Hereford Manor. We'd wait to see a trout rise, throw past it, start reeling, fish on. We used water bobbers. They are a clear plastic bobber you are able to fill with water(as much as you want) and cast a country mile. You can use any light weight lure you want and cast them a long ways.

I troll joe's flies on smaller lakes and they crush the trout, you can also add a split shot to vary the depth it will troll, when I fish from a boat for trout that's all I use is joe's. Crappie tend to like them as well.

These used to be trout killers on Canonsburg Lake - near the dam from a boat. A small split shot a few inches up helps in casting............
