New Park on Walnut

Millcreek supervisors to approve grant for Walnut Creek project By JOHN GUERRIERO, Erie Times-News

Millcreek Township supervisors today are expected to approve a $97,000 grant to stabilize a section of Walnut Creek and to make a park that would be open to anglers.

The grant is from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and the township will provide manpower and materials for the job, Supervisor Brian McGrath said. The township will help to build walking trails to the creek and an asphalt parking lot, he said.

The project will begin this summer, McGrath said.

The area is off Zimmerly Road, near two sewage overflow retention tanks behind the Millcreek Mall.

Wow, that's way upstream. Do that many fish even make it past the rr tracks? I've gone up past the tracks to where is posted and have only ever seen a few fish. Still nice though.

The boy scout hole was actually way up stream from there. More behind Granada apartments, top of Washington Ave.

Not true;  Every time I walk miles on upper walnut when the streams are loaded and water is low I see at least 1 steelhead.

With the number of fish they stock in that creek and the access available to the upper wooded sections, you would think the PFBC would do something about getting fish past the chutes and waterfall eventually.       Maybe make it a little easier for them to get past the project holes as well, while still keeping a decent holding area through there.  It would have to be easier than what they have already done with 4 mile.

One decent sized excavater could dig a whole lot of new stream in a week. Dig out a big, wide ditch, fill it with gravel, then connect it to the stream. The fish will fill up the stream, then you can increase the amount of fishable water. It's genius! LOL!

Simple, blow the waterfowl at the top of the chutes out and make from route 5 to the mouth 1 fish daily limit. I live on upper walnut, below buttermilk falls, I know upper walnut like the back of my hand, I have been fishing it since I was 8 and have been playing in those woods well before than.  There are fish around but not enough for 99% of you guys. Its sad, upper walnut is the most beautiful stream in Erie....IMO and the fishing used to be unreal. Things have changed, neighborhoods have moved in stealing water to there drainage areas instead of into the creek, everyone and there brother pounds and keeps those fish at the mouth, the hatchery on sterretania was shut down years ago (I am currently attempting to get it restarted and take over the fish feeding) and most of all the waterfall at the chutes, I cant say fish cant get up it, because they can, but I have sat at that waterfall for hours in every type of water there is, just observing, fish struggle...big time. Building a park directed for fisherman on upper walnut is kinda pointless, kind of like the vetrans park they just put in at the end of Love rd.

The Lord has blessed us all today... It's just that he has been particularly good to me.

in years prior when the waterfall wasn't curving in on itself, upper walnut was great to fish.  But, I don't ever see this happening, like a fish ladder or any of that.  It would defeat the purpose of having the project holes.

I think the purpose of having the project holes was just to create a better holding area with more fish and easy access for people.  Not to stack the fish up like cord wood, and create a situation where hardly any fish make it upstream to miles of scenic public access.

In my opinion there is probably a very small window where the height those project hole logs need to be, in order to create those conditions.  Right now they are too high, could be solved by cutting out small notches and reinforcing the wood, so fish can advance under lower conditions, but not advance easily enough that there won't ever be any fish there.  I don't think they would need a ladder on Walnut to get fish into the upper parts again, seems some things could be done to help without spending much money at all.  That waterfall could also easily be fixed without a ladder.

You and me both grew up there. I think I told you once that I became a cross country track star fishing that hatchery.  I hope that you can get it up and running again--let me know how that goes.

I am probaly going to get blasted for typing this but I would rather see some machinery come in and do some work on Elk Creek down by the lake.
From Rt 5 to the lake could be MUCH better holding water with some digging/and boulder formations.
Either that or open up the middle of he creek to the public,SOMEHOW.
We do not need any more access lots on the creeks in the currently public areas.
    Just my wish list.....................
I fished Upper Walnut about 5-6 years back found a pod of hundreds of steelies in a hole fished them hard 3 days in a row landed over 200 fish in those 3 days with a freinds help, it was silly.Best day out of the 3 I landed 76 fish lost track of hook ups.Fish can and do make it past the falls but the majarity do not.

The PFBC would probably rather have all the fish on Walnut stay from the chutes on down.  Much easier to patrol the creek from there.

A lot has changed just in the past 5 years.  In my beginner days I vividly remember parking at the rt 5 tunnels and seeing hundreds of fish in the tubes and all the way up to the tressel.  Stopped at buttermilk falls a few times this year and I agree, its gorgeous water.  Each time only a few fish (countable on one hand) and gin clear water.  It would be great to get more fish up there.

Used to catch a bunch all the way up past the Mall in the early 2000's, not so much anymore.  Then again, I don't fish Walnut that much anymore...  and when I do, I'd rather go slam a dozen or so out in the project holes at the end of the day, and maybe catch a laugh or two.

This is great do they allow overnight camping? Also, will there be a canoe/kayak launch? I want float this "new, pristine" section of water.
