Fishing near downtown Pittsburgh
Taking a buddy out this weekend that is a beginner to fishing. Are there any spots on the three rivers close to downtown that we could get some bites? Also - any tips on what species to target or what to throw would be appreciated. We will be fishing from the shore. Just want to keep it fairly interesting for him. I unfortunately haven't gotten out yet this year either so any info would be appreciated!

Catfish are usually around the wharfs or the point, try chicken livers or stink baits. There is a fishing area off Browns Hill rd above the Homestead Highlevel Bridge that is fairly popular. It is a right turn just past the bridge. Southside Park at 18th street has shore fishing. You might catch almost anything there. Try using minnows if available or nightcrawlers

duck hollow is the place off of browns hill road that pghmarty is referring too. you can also fish at any length of the walk along the river on the north side near the stadiums. easy to find parking around there at this time of year. its a cool place to fish because of the location.

downtown is a great place to fish, take a bike and you can hit multiple spots along the trails outside PNC Park and head up river toward Millvale or Etna. From shore throw corn, (vanilla), bread, chicken livers on the bottom for carp and catfish. You will get the occasional bass or walleye if you toss out some bass lures as well. carp and catfish are your best bet. goodluck

Be sure to be careful where you go. There are a lot of lowlifes around some of the areas from what I have been told. I have never fished that part of the Mon. I have never fished past Glassport and that was a long time ago. I carry a gun when I'm out fishing anywhere. Just last year my brother and I were fishing a stream that is kinda by itself. Had a few guys that I think wanted to try to run us off our hole. They started firing into the creek about 40 yards upstream. After a few words directed toward them, they left.

In these temperatures I probably wouldn't target carp or catfish if I didn't have a specific place in mind. If you're just going out with a beginner to try your luck wherever you end up, live baitfish would be a good bet, giving you a chance at a number of species that are more active this time of year. Just use a slip sinker rig and see what you come up with.

Duck Hollow is a great place for shore access eyes at dusk. A regular crowd gathers almost daily (late afternoon), some guys in their 70's. Good group of guys that enjoy catching fish and bs'ing. The Sharpsburg pier is nice for pier fishing and working/walking/wading the shoreline up towards Silky's can be productive.

Finally decided to give the river a try on my lunchbreak. wasnt expecting much because i only had 15-20 minutes or so...ended up landing 2 nice smallmouth and a striper! Makes the work day go by a lot less painful hahaha

Ya ive heard of guys catching some big ones. Never saw them in person though. There were a lot of decent sized fish busting the surface while I was down there today. Im assuming some of them had to be carp. A few weeks ago I saw a gigantic school of bass busting up a bait pod just outside our building...Was pretty cool to see. Wish i had my rod and some creek chubs haha

NO Striper. Not to bust your bubble. But that is a white bass. The PFBC stopped stocking hybrid stripers in the 3rivers back in 2009. Few are still in the river because they have a short life span. Soon to be a thing of the past. Nice fish though. Congrats.

http://www.tpwd.state.tx....s/wbass_diagrams.phtml white bass indeed. Gotta love the lunch break fishing. I sometimes fish for trout or carp on my lunch break too. This is a good time of year to target white bass. Can be fast action at times. they seem to like real shiny flashy lures. Thanks for the report and pics

tough call on what it is, looking at fishing guys diagram A white bass only has 1 line that extends to the tail, Snags pictures show several that extend to the tail. I still think it's a hybrid, especially with the color, tinted green, never saw a white bass that tinted in color.

always good to get away from work for a bit, the smallmouth are so abundant down there. across the river from where you're at there are rock ledges. it's awesome from a boat, as soon as the jig or worm falls off the ledge a lot of the times it's FISH ON!. The Smallies are getting a tad bigger each year too which is good to see!

Blue lagoon i ALWAYS see boats fishing there and most of the time theyre catching fish. We have been wondering what the structure is like over there. Early in the morning when the water is flat and glassy its unreal how many fish you see jumping and breaking the surface

yup, rock ledges when the water warms up the fish will sit above them on the shoreline as well. The bigger smallies tend to stay a bit deeper though. I typically let the wind drift my boat down that whole shoreline up till the second bridge. The one year the trees hung over the water had swarm of insects of some kinds and every time our bait or they hit the water the fish would destroy them. The Mon river is excellent smallie fishing. I can't wait to get out.

Yup that's a spottie. I caught this smallie today, and one spottie at my regular spot. Also caught 1 spottie under birm. bridge. I attempted Hot Metal Bridge...not only is there no where to park (gee, that never happens in Southside) but the only way down I could find was on the right side of the bridge and it looked really steep, didn't want to risk it.

Nice. When I worked downtown we'd sneak away for an overpriced lunchtime beer at chez Kim's. I now see I wasted money and time.

This is a good thread. I can't wait to do some night fishing down at the point. I think they re-open the fountain in June. Never caught anything monstrous there, but decent carp and catfish.

That's a solid white bass. This time of the year you can often find them running the tributaries. If you hit them right, it's not impossible to catch a fish on every single cast for hours at a time.
