2013 Yough Thread
Well, usually multiple "Yough" threads come up, from stocking, to water conditions, to what are they bitin on. So figured I'd start the 2013 thread for any and all Yough questions, seein we are just over a week away from club stockings getting started. Speaking of, if you haven't already, please send in your membership donation for your buttons, as these funds are what get the fish in the water. Don't be a deadbeat. Clubs are more important now than ever to get fish in streams. With PFBC in fiscal disrepair, they are cutting back on both fish sizes and fish numbers...... remember a few years ago, their mantra was to stock less, but bigger fish ? That sure didn't last long eh ?

Can you blame them though? I mean if they aren't getting the money, they can't really stock the fish, big or small. Also, if I want to help out with stocking, donations or lending a hand, how do I do it? Going to the Yough this Thursday with a few friends, only my second time, so far haven't gotten anything, but I'm figuring I could still help some way

Good post, Puffy. Support the river clubs, buy a button and help "Stock the Yough". All the clubs (Connellsville, Smithton, West Newton) have been stocking big-shouldered trout in the river for over 40 years. I agree about not being a deadbeat. I've bought buttons and fished the river for as long as those clubs have been stocking and can't tell you how many times I've watch guys rope a limit of trout and then walk past a guy selling buttons and never buy one. Support the clubs and help Stock the Yough!

Is there any way you can buy the button without being there? I don't ravel any more but years ago use to fish the spillway and down every year. I still buy hunting licenses every year but gave that up in 2004 due to health.

You can get them at Gander Mountain in Greensburg, order by mail, just go to the website and the address is listed or Rimel Rifles in Jones Mill has them.

I didn't know you could get them at Rimel's. I might have to stop by there and pick one up. I haven't been in there yet. It's just down the road. I don't trout fish much, but those trout do help feed the fish I do fish for, so I would like to see them continue going into the river.

Speaking of the Yough, I talked to a fellow that caught a 19 inch walleye near Connellsville today and I had a rather large fish hit a six inch stick bait but I didn't land or even get to see it. Strange but the way it did a head shake reminded me of how a steelhead fights. Could have been a large trout. I don't usually fish the trout stocked areas but always try and buy a button. I caught a couple 17 inch walleye there two weeks ago. Maybe I'll should start keeping a few.

Also, if I want to help out with stocking, donations or lending a hand, how do I do it? I know of 4 clubs that raise $$ and sell membership donations in order to put fish in. Smithton is the one I donate to, and I have donated to West Newton in the past. Each club puts fish in their respective locations.. I'll list the 4 clubs I know of. I'm sure each has a website that you can get in and click on membership to make a donation Smithton is only 10 lousy buckes and every bit helps. Smithton Sportsman Association West Newton Sportsman Association Perryopolis Sportsman Association South Connelsvilel Sportsman Association

That's a different twist on it, but the donation still helps, haha.

It's great when we get a little high water right around the stockings. Helps move the fish all over the river, especially bows, they love to head upstream.

I live in nearby. Where do they stock Sewickley creek? You are saying Apples Mills bridge. Is that the bridge on the bend by Glesk's and the body shop? I thought they stocked it up near Bells Mills covered bridge. Down on the sharp bend, that part of the creek has an orange tint to it. I have always thought that it would be a heck of a creek if they could clean it up.

Ok, you stock down past the Wachs property. I had heard that it was stocked right past Glesks if you are going toward Herminie. Before the power station there is road that goes down over the hill. I heard people saying that they saw people going down to the creek there.

I'm surprised with the local clubs getting fish in, that there's no traffic on this thread. I haven't gotten out yet. Maybe end of this week.

Yep, Friday caught over 20. Saturday evening, managed a tough 7. Wading Smithton area. Something changed. I know the water dropped a bit in that one day, and the water was strangely warm for early May.
