I'm pretty sure you need a launch permit on any public water.  Here's the PFBC FAQ re registration.  It's 10$/year or 18 for 2 years.

The rivers around the city are nice.  I like the Connemaugh backwaters as well as those of the Loyalhannah.  Keystone State Park is a nice.  Northmoreland is closed to private boats(and no longer rent boats).  Yellow Creek Lake and the Keystone Power Dam are great as well.  Conn & KSP are electric motors only which provides an increased level of comfort.  I spend all my time in these areas, but I'm sure west, south, and north have excellent opportunities as well.  The PFBC also was water trail maps on their website.

I am not a rapids guy.  Occasionally the pinch below Lock 3 will give you a good ride and that's about my limit.

Shmoe, plenty of yakers around the area and a ton of great places to go as CJ mentioned. Definitely get a launch permit.

We just started a club, check out the FB page and the website below. We're planning an event for 4/20 on more throughout the summer, probably even get a few one day tournaments going. Lots of good guys with a ton of fishing knowledge.

Hope to see ya on the water.

Not sure if your confusion is what permit/registration per what waterway.  The PFBC registration will take care of most if not all that you need (USACE, State Park and PFBC).  I think Cannonsburg is a PFBC reservoir, but not 100%.  There are some county lakes, like Cross Creek, that you need a county launch permit (pretty sure for non-powered too).  I have seen folks busted on Moraine for not having registration, and guessing they ended up paying more.  Even if they didn't, they were asked to leave, which $12 is worth not ruining a Saturday...

Be safe if you are using it now, especially in the rivers.  Those barges make some pretty crazy wake.  Always paddle nose first into their wake & make sure you have a flash light with you, if you are out during low visibility.

it's not SouthWest PA - but you'd be hard pressed to find a better trip than Tionesta Creek from Kelletville to Nebraska.
Great scenery, great fishing and scarcely another person in sight for 15 miles.

****in my experience, generally after the first week of June, the water gets too low - be prepared for some portage (but great fishing opportunities in the deeper holes)

I would recommend getting your yak registered instead of getting a launch permit.  They cost about the same price, but you get more benefit from registering.  Launch permits seem to only give you rights to launch from a PA state boat launchs only.  Registration permits you to launch from pretty much anywhere AND supposedly all other states and be pretty much anywhere on the water.  Also with registation, your boat is on record, so in case it is ever lost, stolen, etc and some else tries to take claim on it, they will get busted and you will get your boat back (in theory).  Launch permits do not go on record and you will not benefit in that situation.  Better to go with registering in my opinion.  Happy yakin'!!!  See ya out there!

ok so let me get this straight
If i get my yak registered would i then be able to do state parks as well as county? or do you still need a county permit?  im trying to decipher the FAQs.. i just want to yak (:

I wish this was more straight forward... thats why i end up just going to waters that no one is going to check. but i would like to try some cleaner water.. thats for sure.

Yes, you would be able to do state parks as well as county with registration and will not need a county permit.  I got my yak about 3 years ago and did the same research you are trying to do and you are right, it is not as strait forward as it should be.  I talked to fish commision officer and they pretty much laid it out as I am now if my memory serves me correctly.  Some exclusions could be private lakes and stuff like that, but I've been pretty much everywhere and have not had any problems any time by having my yak registered.  Never been approached, but either way no problems.  Oh, you only need an "unpowered" registration as well.

Post any other questions and I will try to answer to the best of my ability.  Consider calling the fish commission yourself and ask any further questions so you can get answers right from them.  The main number appears to be

Shmoe, you only need to get a launch permit. I think everyone is correct, just using different terms. If you do need to actually get a registration that is news to me.

Launch permits are $10 for 1 year, $18 for 2 years.

I'm pretty sure you need a launch permit on any public water.  Here's the PFBC FAQ re registration.  It's 10$/year or 18 for 2 years.

You don't need a permit for the public waterway itself, you need a launch permit from any fish commission ramp or launch or state park as mentioned above.   It's the ramps, not the waterway per se.   For example, on the Allegheny River at Franklin.  If you use the launch ramp on the west side of the river, you need a permit, if you launch on the east side at the local park along the bike trail you do not.  You don't need any permit to float the river.

Unless you're powering the boat, you do not need a registration at all so I'd suggest getting the launch sticker.   That should keep you covered if you're going to use state and county parks and the occasional commission ramp to launch.

Ah-ha, I wondered why I saw kayaks on the rivers without either a launch permit or registration.

Registeering is actually bad advice for a kayak. Do not register the boat because once the VIN is registered the boat by law has to be registered forever. Just get a launch permit. Most states don't even require that.

This'll be my second full season with a kayak...2 years ago I got one in August, days before taking it on a week long trip (not recommended, but it was a great crash course in learning about it)...then last year I had it out a few times over the summer.

Really looking forward to using it a lot this year, in SWPA, PI, and beyond!

Me and my girlfriend just bought kayaks and went to the auto tag store in latrobe because the pfbc site said they sell permits and we got slapped in the face with rude comments from 2 nasty employees and a 20$ processing fee for each permit.. over and above the 18$ for the 2 year permit. Is there a seperate permit for any other lakes around here? One of the employee's made a smart comment on how this permit won't be legit for some places

The dealers that sell the permits charge the extra $2 for the processing fee.  The permit costs $18, but the processing is $2, which you would get charged by the PFBC as well.

That is the only permit that I use, but there might be permits for specific county lakes.  Anything that is state or federal, you are good to go.

that place is terrible. the employees act they are royalty and they overcharge. id only go there in an emergency. the only other lakes in the area i know of where you need a separate permit is cross creek.

If you register online you can print a temporary and they mail you the actual stickers in 3-4 weeks.

I just bought a future beach trophy 126 from dicks with 1 dry box and storage in the back, with 2 rod holders. I'm taking it up to keystone lake tomorrow, the reviews say its very stable for fishing, I will let you know how it goes.

I'm a wilderness guy myself. Tarpon and Ride are fantastic in my opinion. Jackson Cuda is supposed to be awesome too but never paddled one.

It all depends on what you want though and what kind of budget you're working with. And I'd suggest paddling a few before you take the plunge.

There's a ton of accessories now to make installing a ff on a yak fairly easy. There's also a ton of DIY's also.

The first thing I would look is if you want the transducer to go through the hull or over the side. I have a SOT an opted to put mine over the side with a transducer. How you will be powering the unit is next, I have a small 8 battery pack in a small dry bag.

These will give you some ideas. PM me with any questions.
