We used to. Make them as high as possible, as high as in you still need to use a tether to pull the main line in to attach the clips to.
Our first try, we didn't make them high enough so the angle wasn't good enough and the clips didn't slide out really well and the mainline dipped into the bigger waves too much when we fished in sportier weather.
We made homemade jobbies out of stainless pipe for the masts, solid machined aluminum 4 bolt bases (we made them removable with clips at the bases) and used the big jon, wille or some other wheels and pulley with a spring up top to take some of the shock load from boards bouncing in the waves.
Having them on the gunnels at the back of the hard top made for easy one man setting at the beginning of the day and easy one man retrieval at the end of the day.
