Line ice question???

When Stillheding, I seem to have a lot of trouble with my line and eyelets icing up. I have this, gunk, that i put on the line and eyes but it doesnt seem to work well. I can say I learned that braided line doesnt work well in the colder months. That was a 1st year mistake. I like braid, 3lb spiderwire is my favorite for the warmer months but that stuff just ices real fast. Any suggestions?

Tough in the winter months to keep ice from forming. My guess is to apply your gunk before you start and re-apply when necessary.

I switch to 10lb mono with a 6lb leader when its too cold for braid. I start with the braid but if it freezes up I take a back up spool with the mono on it. I like braid too but in the winter It holds more water and tends to freeze way more faster on your eyelets. Mono wont hold as much water when reeling in and wont ice them up as fast.

You can try some chapstick on your line and eyelets , it helps the water to drip off easier and tends to ice up less frequent.

Thx Deetz. I'll give the Chapstick a try. The "gunk", i cant find it right now, probably in the car, to see the name of it. But its made just for helping with icing. You use 10lb mono, with a 6lb leader, is the leader mono, or fluro??

i use nothing but 4# pline. i fish the creeks all winter when ever i get a chance. first of all, dont let the ice get to bad. sit back and get it cleared before it gets out of hand. chap stick in the guides and reel magic on everything else every few casts. you will still get ice if its too cold, but it will help.

I use reel magic on the spool and chapstick in the guides. Clear the eyelets every few drifts. If you let it get too bad on the last eyelet you'll cast and have a mess of a rats nest.

Stanley Ice paste and Pam(cooking spray) work alright.
Its important to apply both to a dry rod the nite before.
After a while you will need to reapply.
I agree with other post do not let it build up.

You can also run the line over a candle.  Or a blob of bees wax.  For the eyes I've always used chapstick or vaseline.  And if you get a blob of ice on a knot or a bobber make sure to get it off.
