I can't believe nobody on here has commented on the guy sinking his car to the roof pulling his boat out at bear run on Saturday evening.

Supposedly went in to within inches of the roof and they pulled him out with a jeep winch. Happened around 8 pm. A guy drove to porters cove to pull his boat out because the ramp wasall backed up at bear run. I was hoping to hear true or false on it but iI don't know why the guy would make it up

Fished Arthur yesterday from 6:00 AM til 12:30 PM. I went fishless for the first five and a half hours and probably 350 casts. Then I caught a beautifull 4 pound 7 ounce large mouth. A beautiful fish. Caught it on a KVD white spinner bait with dual Colorado blade. Caught it along a sunken log near the 528 launch. Made the trip well worth it. It's the second largest bass I have taken out of Arthur. The largest was a 4 pound 11 ounce taken 3 years ago under 422. I will eventually get a 5 pounder out of there. I know there a many of them in there.

Anyone on the lake after the rains this weekend?  How did the water look?  Is it still neon green and warm?  Come on Fall patterns!

Anyone know if the lake has turned yet? or has anyone been out fishing with any luck. I haven't been fishing in quite sometime and might have a free pass here this Saturday to get out. Curious if the perch/crappie bite has started yet.

Thanks!

Fished on Saturday 10-5-13, the lake was a big green musty mess, algae everywhere! I have never seen it look that bad. Some of the coves weren't too bad. Perch and Gill bite was decent. Hope to get back out at the end of the month. Water Temp was 66.4 in the A.M and peaked at 70* mid afternoon.

Hit the lake yesterday.  Water temp 61 at sunrise and hit 70 by mid PM.  Still the musty green & marked a thermocline around 23' at any water deeper than 25'.  Still seems to be the Summer bite, early morning had action, then after the sun came out for a few hours, they went in hiding.  Got a decent wiper (22") and had another peel 20 yards of drag before self releasing.  Also a few other short strikes as well.  My father in law got two nice wiskers and a few nice takes without reward.  After a few hours of trying to find where the hungry ones went, we hit some shoreline structure.  It seemed like they wanted to be there, but just not yet.  Got a few pan fish about 10' away from the structure, hanging out in the deeper water.  Not a great day, but much better than the Summer doledrum fishing that I was getting fed up with...

I'm curious; have any of you had any success on Arthur using twister tail jigs of any type? That's my go-to on the three rivers and certain creeks, but in all the years I've been fishing Arthur I have never once had so much as a bite on a twister tail there, and when my brother recently told me the same thing, I had to wonder what's up with that?

Last time I tried 'em there a couple Crappie a few L/M & 4 pike in the 28 - 34" range on a hot summer Arthurnoon. Sm. Eagle claw jig with yellow twister tail 'bout 1.5" in length worked ok that day.

Hmmm...I have a bunch of yellow in the box, but I don't think I've ever strayed from either white, black, or Chartreuse. I need to get that Yellow goin'! I wonder, since I have good success with Hot Clown Rapalas up there, if the Golden Shiner population is the reason yellow works.

Re:Lake Arthur 2013/10/20 01:13:50 (permalink)
Great day on the lake today despite (or because of!) the blustery weather that repeatedly kicked up. I fished for about 4+ hours and got 3 decent Largemouth, several babies (literally babies; like, 3-4 inches long), and a bunch of nice sized 'gills. One Perch too. I wasn't keeping anything today, but could've had a near limit of nice 'gills.

I tried out the Gulp Alive Helgrammites (1.5") and they worked well, catching nothing but large 'gills. I switched to the Gulp Alive minnow (1" Emerald Shiner) and it was like suddenly ringing the food bell! They totally earned the second spot in my go-to for panfish, as they picked up not only the bigger fish, but the smaller ones as well. Had it been a warmer day or if I'd dressed properly, I'd have stayed and tried a few more areas to see how other fish reacted to them.

LBG- nice report, glad those Gulp Helgrammites and Minnows worked out for you. Panfish Love them. I wish they made a 2" version to target larger fish. I know berkley makes a 2" soft minnow that I use, but it is not as effective as the Gulp Alive. Someone had mentioned trimming down the 2.5" version has anyone tried it?

from the reports it seems like it will be a good fall for panfish, I'll be back out this saturday targeting perch. It'll be pretty fridgid, but that's ok, just means less anglers. I'll post a report.

I trim down the 2.5 all of the time & the fish don't seem to mind.  Usually I'll try the 2.5 by itself, but if get 2-3 short strikes, will trim.  You can't squeeze out the 10+ fish per one bait, like the 1" or whole 2.5, but can still get 5-6 before you need a new one.  I usually just scrap the other piece, but tried using a small chunk to tip jigs that they were short striking and worked.  I'm sure you could get creative with the scraps and an X-Acto.  For some reason, this late fall bite seems better with live fatheads for me.  I'd love for the bite to be on Gulps, to keep my hands dry in 30-40 degree weather.  Hopefully be cleaning up your scraps on Sunday.

Sounds good, I have some firetiger 2.5" i'd like to try and cut down. I will most likely pick up some live minnows too just incase the gulps are not working to well. Will also try to tip with a crawler.
Any Idea what time O'Donnell's opens? His site says 6 am but I quit buying live bait because it seems he opens later and later and I like to get on the water pretty early.

Wonder what this rain and large drop in temp will do to the fish? I'm thinking it might push them deeper. Saturday and Sunday are both looking like  ideal days to get out.

What's a good home-aid beer breadin' for the deep fryer?? Prob. get the ole skunkos  Are Chubs any good eatin' if they were raised on Cat food,  corn flakes, fruity pebbles, captain crunch, football shaped pretzels & crackers?

Re:Lake Arthur 2013/10/29 09:31:31 (permalink)
The key is feeding them Fruity Pebbles.  Delicious if raised on Fruity Pebbles only.  Horrible if they eat anything else...  Speaking of chubs, I set a trap last week, and nothing.  Checked it twice.  A few weeks back, had the thing filled so much with chubs and dace, that I had to throw back about half.  Even kept what I didn't use, and put back where I trapped for later catching.  I hope they didn't figure out my trap.

Crappy - I'm sure you'll be able to put enough in the cooler for a meal or two.  Hopefully a feast.  I pulled my boat this weekend for the Winter.  Hit the lake, and basically hid from the wind for most of the day.  Was able to get some perch, but none more than 9.5".  Did get a 13" & 16" largemouth.  If you can get out without the wind, I think you'll hammr them.  Today and tomorrow look ideal.  Hoping to run into a few more days like this to get into the Fall bite and have a fry of my own.

I tried chubs. I will not be trying them again. yuk. lol

Take the 2.5" Gulps and split them down the middle from head to tail. Then cut off .5" and be sure to keep the piece you cut off. Use the piece you cut off to tip lures. You can also thread that chunk onto a hook and push it the whole way up onto the line above the hook. Then bait the hook with whatever. The Gulp chunk adds color and scent. Works well when fishing for crappie/panfish under a float.

If Crappy is having a hard time pulling some over the rails, then something is up.  Thermocline rupture?  This past weekend's wind & low temps had to have mixed things up a bit.  Looks like round two the next few days.  Hopefully trigger the Fall pattern.

  Tim,

The Perch bite is as 'bout as good as it can get. Crappie better Arthurmoon. Pike & L/M decent Arthurnoon. Can't say 'bout from boat since I've only been wadin'. Sure the large ByrdsEyes are feedin' heavy now but not after 'em.

Went out last hr. ov Arthureve 'till rain hit 7:30. Hat blew off more than once. Got a 3/4 bucket full on back porch. 1st fry of season coming this week. Can't find the beer batter recipe I had from a old In Fisherman Mag. It was for Bass but was great for Panfish.
