Is there 3 to 4 inches of black ice or is it mixed?  Sounds like some of these guys are half simple going out on it!  Especially sittin over 15 plus feet of water down at the Jamestown end.

Drove around the southern end this afternoon.  Only saw about 6 shanties out, and the area I was gonna check had some wet spots on it.

Maybe you should have walked out a ways and checked for yourself before you start passing judgement on us guys out there today. Some of us aren't afraid to walk on 5" ice, as we did today.

Yea really didnt mean anything personal about it but after calling a few bait shops and asking around guys was telling me it was unsafe ice.  I'll be on it tomorrow like the rest of you so before you sit there and assume I'm talking trash on you, you have no idea how dedicated I am to the sport of fishing so think what you want.  Fishing is about a tradition and enjoying mother nature.  Not smack talk.

Well.... How much did anybody have to pay for a fish today? I dropped everything I had down the hole today in many different spots and I sure couldn't buy a fish! Only seen 2 fish caught all day..... Ice was good on south 4-6. Jimmy town was only about 2.5... North was 2-4 of black ice. Marked tons of fish but they just had lock jaw!

^^^THIS. Frustrating has Heck. My buddy and I caught a handfull of nice gills and a few dink perch. Tons of fish marked. Tons of follows. Very few strikes. I did learn that the faint marks coming in on the Vex actually aren't faint marks. I kept seeing them, thinking there was a school of crappie on the outside of my cone. Nope. Gizzard shad. Drove me nuts.

4-4.5" of good ice off of Jamestown Beach #1
4" of IFFY ice off of Jamestown marina with 2.5-3" of Iffy ice scattered throughout.

BE VERY CAREFUL and I hope you did/do better than we did today.

My grandson and I caught a mess of  smelt  last fall down in the Jamestown marina. Those might not have been  shad.   We had the same problem yesterday...lots

Might have been smelt. I saw some dead gizzard shad and just assumed, but very well could have been smelt. One way or the other, it was some kind of small baitfish.

went out from McArthur road today quite a walk to fish in about 19 to 23 ft of water, ice was good and hard about 4 or 5 inches. Caught 4 channel cats, 1 perch.1 crappie and my buddy caught one walleye and rolled another. Lot of work for that......

Slammed the gills, perch, and a few crappie on Wilhelm this evening.  Stayed to about 10:30pm.  Between 2 of us over 50 fish through the ice in about 5 hrs of fishing!  Solid 6 to 7 inches as well on the main lake around launch #3.  Alot better then Pymie on Saturday fishing for 5 hrs without even a bite.

Had crummy ice out to the right off tuttle Saturday...was only 2.5" over the cribs I wanted to fish. Ended up sitting on 3.5" Ice was variable with the snow cover...seemed anywhere there was an inch more snow drifted up, there was and inch less ice....measured anywhere from 2.5"-4".
Lookers & no takers here too.

we will probably break even by saturday looking at the weather, maybe up to 25% worse by then, long as we get a good enough refreeze wed-fri eve, sunday could be a safe plan.  i wouldn't plan a vacation until then lol.

I'm not even that optimistic. I'll be suprised if there is safe ice on there anytime this season. It was iffy on Saturday. After 3 days of warm rain, we might lose it all. It takes forever for it to get locked up and be fishable. I'm just getting really discouraged. I hope I'm wrong.

Smelt? Really?  The only places in PA that I know of that has smelt are Lake Erie and I think maybe Raystown Lake.  I even looked through a bunch of the PFBC biologist reports and none of them show any smelt that were captured.

You sure they weren't spottail shiners(which kinda sorta might resemble a smelt to some people)?  Or golden shiners?
