Worth going out?

I got the itch to fish. Live real close to lake arthur, but with the boat put away for the winter, and no ice on the lake, I was wondering if its even worth going out? Id be fishing from the shoreline, so any input on the idea would be fantastic! Thanks

In my opinion, anytime you get out there with a line in the water is time well spent. If you go, let me know how you did, I have been anxious to try out some shore fishing at Arthur, but its about an hour from me and the rivers have had plenty to offer lately.

I agree with SRL anytime spent fishing is worth it, always something new to learn....many of the panfish have probably moved to deeper holes for the winter, and away from the shorline structure. I haven't fished the lake since late november so I won't be of much help. If you know the lake try and find access to some of those deeper holes. There are alot of guys on this site close to Arthur as well, hopefully they can chime in to help you out.

    Good Luck!

If there is open water, it is worth going out.  If you have the time and easy drive...  Some of my better days come right before ice starts and right after it comes off.  I would guess the fish are taking advantage of the open water too.  I'd fish areas that are usually filled with weeds.  I'd imagine they are pretty full of baby bluegills and other small fish.  Wherever there are congregations of small fish, there are usually larger ones stopping by for a snack.

Seems to me that if you've got the "itch to fish". It's "worth" going fishing.

I did end up going out for a few hours. The only place I could think ofthat was deep right off the shore line was the bay right beside the dam. Threw some minnows along the wall there and did a heck of alot better than I thought I would. 4 crappie, 2 largemouths, and a striper! And to think I was targeting the perch that usually lay on the bottom there.

And I should have been more specific. I had the itch to catch fish. During the warmer months I have no problem spending a whole day at the lake and not catching a thing. I have a slightly different mindset in the winter...

Awesome job dude.  Any size to the wiper?

Another deep spot with shore access is under the 422 bridge.  Not really sure how folks access.  If there is a legal pull off?  I have seen guys fishing from shore there before.  I know taking the boat 5-6' away from shore, it is already 15-20 feed deep.  A lot of places along the cabins like that too.  Where the North Shore day use area (beach) is, basically continuation of shore line from the cabin area, it is similar.  You need to go out about 20', and drops off almost instantly.  Also wading out on the sandbar by the dam island.  A little cold for that though...

I also have to agree with SRL and Spoonchucker. If one has the urge to go fishing and does go, it's time well worth spent. Gotta scratch that itch! You know the old adage "A bad day fishing...".

Porktown, it wasn't anything special. 23 inches. Not incredibly fat like some fish are this time of year. I've caught bigger whilst fishing the night bite out there during early summer, but I guess anytime you catch one of those while not targetting them its a plus. Also, in regards to there being a legal pull off on 422, not really. There are ways to get there though, and if you private messaged me id be more than happy to divulge.

23" is a quality wiper.  Probably larger than my average size this year.  I used to fish that same area as a kid, and had some nice days there.  Doubt that my Dad took me in mid Winter there though...
