Donegal

Has anybody had an eye on Donegal? I'm just wondering what the ice looks like there. I'm hoping to get on Acme tomorrow, and if I go I'll try to swing by Donegal and check it out & I'll post a report if I do. Just wondering if anyone has any info already.
Thanks in advance.
Tight lines, & God bless.

Well, I did take a quick run out to Donegal yesterday afternoon. I didn't go out and drill any holes myself however there were  fisherman just 20-25' off of the boat launch and they said they were on 3.5 -4" of ice. They said they had fished the day before down by the dam and ice was about the same there.
When I talked to them yesterday they said they had not caught anything, and had only caught one fish the day before.
If you go be careful. I haven't been ice fishing very long, but I know enough to know that with this warm up it won't take long for mediocre ice to turn bad in a hurry.
    Tight lines & God bless.

Yeah, we went to Acme, all I can say is that I learned my lesson trying to take an overactive 4 yr old who can't sit still to save himself, ice fishing!
We got out and got set up pretty much in front of the parking area, I drilled two holes and he was scooping them out for me, he slipped and fell on the scoop and broke it in two (which was ok, thats why I bought a cheap plastic scoop for the boys to use, still I thought it would survive longer than two holes!) He proceded to tangle up both his rod and mine inside the flip over. And when I decided to try doing some hole hopping with him just to give him something to do he slid around on the wet ice until he was soaked to the bone and was asking to leave within 20 minutes.
    Never even marked a fish.
Oh well, wasn't really trying to do much besides spend some time with my boy, and now I know it needs to be a while before we spend time ice fishing together. Thats ok, he does pretty well on the boat, so we'll get some fishing done together in the spring/summer.
Next time I think I'll just take him to the zoo or the park.

Preacher, 4 is a good time to start. Just them being out there with you is great and they will remember it. It won't be long and he'll be taking you fishing.

Good for you Fishinpreacher taking your son ice fishing! I started my son open water fishing at 2 years old, but all that I had him do was to sit on my lap and when I got a hit, I'd put his hand on the rod so he could feel that "thump - thump - thump". Then I'd put his hand on the handle, help him turn it and bring in the fish. His little face would get the biggest smile when they hit! He remembers it still and he's 13 years old now. As Wally Cat wrote, 4 years old is a good time to start them out ice fishing and before you know it, he'll be taking you fishing. Tempus fugit! The time you have invested in taking him fishing in particular and being with him in general is well worth it. Good job!

Thanks Fish5000, the only thing I love to do more than fish is to fish with my boys. I have a 5yr old, a 4 yr old, and a 6 month old (all sons). My 4 yr old Caden might be a little young for ice fishing yet (more a matter of maturation than age I think) but he likes to fish out of the boat especially in the summer when we can beach the boat and go swimming.
My 5 yr Corban is a lot more ready and I think I could take him on a full day of ice fishing under the right circumstances.
Both of them have been fishing with me from as early as I could get them out. The first time I took Corban he was like 18-20 months old we were fishing a little pond crushing blue gills, I would hook one and help him reel it in then take it off the hook and help him throw it back he would say "bye bye fishey!" Then look at me and say "do it again!" Loved it!!! And I'm looking forward to getting my youngest Caleb out with me too. I hope to have many many years of father son fishing ahead of me!

Your welcome! Those are memories the boys will have for a long time and it's great stuff as it helps"bind" the family. If more parents would spend quality time with their children, there would be much less trouble with youths as they grow up. Unfortunately, I see it everyday in my profession.

Sadly 0 ice on Donegal... Some slush down at the corner near the dam and maybe some icy mud but other then that it's all open water... I was there for about 2 hours today and caught nothing...  I must say though I never knew that the lake bed was a steep as it really is I thought it was gradual little shelves not 2/3' then almost solid slope drop...

With the temps they're calling for up here this week. Next weekend should be safe. February is supposed to get real cold, so the season isn't over yet. We just don't need anymore days like yesterday.

At the boat ramp/dock, you could cast from shore and put your bait in 17-20ft of water. I have been all through there following the channel. It is a drop off. The entire area on the other side of the ramp is only 1-3 feet deep, and the weeds get really thick to the point they will stop your trolling motor
