ICE SEASON?
I doubt I'm the only one chomping at the bit after deer season to hit the ice... I guess I'll start the thread. If anyone would kindly post any updates about ice conditions, it would be appreciated! Hope we get a season....

The extended forecast upper 20s to 30 during the day, teens to low 20s at night holds true, might be fishing 3rd week of January maybe 2nd week for the early birds. just guessing. I feel safer waiting for thicker ice. There's already skim ice on some of the ponds around this area.

I really wanted to get into ice fishing last winter but there was no safe ice! Bought a bunch of gear too and didn't get to use it. Ponds in my area are freezing up and there's even some ice on the bigger lakes. I hope it's better this year.

Been muskrat trapping on ponds around me. Have to bust thru about an 1" or 1.25" ice the last few days.
Can't wait to get the ice gear out!

I saw some skim ice on the rivers last week, so hopefully it won't be long now. I should have been born in Minnesota or Michigan. Let the fishing season begin!

I think we may have just lost our season again this year. With such thin ice on the lakes this snow sure isn't going to help make any ice. It's going to take quite an extended period to produce safe ice. Maybe by February we might have some ice but wouldn't hold my breathe.

The only thing i can say good about the snow we got is it happened before the big water locked up. Thank God. My son and i set beaver traps today and i watched him walk on the ice a short distance before it broke. It was a little over an inch.

Sgt! Haven't seen you on here for a while! It's good to hear from you. Perhaps we can get out on the ice some time! I hope you had a nice Christmas. Are you getting any rats? Last I heard, they were only bringing $3 on a big one.

I've been fishing the river below the dam, up to the first snow fall. I caught a few eyes and some perch on salted minnows and jigs. Water is to high for me now and flowing fast.

Checked out Sugar Lake this afternoon. 3" of hard ice....some gray areas that looked iffy....skiff of snow on top. Parking lot NOT plowed but should be plowed by Saturday. South end looked better than North.

Pymy is completely locked up, I didn't see any open water. Going to venture out with the auger tomorrow to check thicknesses. I walked across a cove that was one of the first to freeze and not even a crack, so keeping fingers crossed and these temps they're calling for ill be fishing Tuesday and Wednesday (next days off work cause I doubt tomorrow will provide good safe ice). Ill update on what I find tomorrow evening sometime.
The worst day hunting or fishing will always be better then the best day at school or work!

Slabdaddy nice to be back. Had alot going on. My son wanted to try trapping and dad got hooked again with him. We caught 57 rats, 25 coon, 1 mink and 6 beaver so far with one beaver going 51 lbs. I pulled almost all the traps getting ready for the ice. Here is a tid bit of info one of my friends called to tell me that they are fishing Golden run at shenango today it was 5 inches near shore and 4 inches out in the channel area. My first real days of fishing will be next week on Wednesday and Thursday. The plan for now is to fish pyme and if that doesn't happen I will be at shenango or wilhelm. I catch alot of real nice crappie at shenango. If I fish Pyme I will be at manning or tuttle point. Just look for the black and orange otter shantie. My buddy has the same set up so if you see two you know its me. I have not seen too many of the Team Wild Otter shanties around. Good luck and keep me posted.

That's a pretty good haul. I hope prices hold up for you. I REALLY want to hit Shenango. I've been told stories about that place... SLABS I wouldn't waste my time with Wilhelm. It's the new Dead Sea. I can't wait to hit Pymie. I want to pull an 'eye through the ice bad. I won't be out during the week though. That sucks. Hopefully I can hook up with you some weekend. Another good friend of mine offered to take me up there and teach me some things. I can't wait to get out with him. He's a member here too. Who knows, maybe we could put our heads together a day and really smoke 'em! Please keep in touch Sarge. Missed ya. Glad you're back and glad you and your Dad and boy got to do some real man bonding. Nothing brings the generations closer than sharing the outdoors.

Slabdaddy, I have taken my limit of slab crappies so my times at shenango it's hard to keep track. The key is to find a stump in the channel and jig just off the side of it. I have most of the stumps in my GPS and found them with my sonar and underwater camera. Shenango is fun. I like to take my Camera and set it up watching my jig. The water is pretty clear and you can see the crappies coming. The kids love it!!! They love watching the fish eat the lure. I have seen on the camera just about every inch of the sreen full of crappies. It got a little tough because you couldn't see your jig sometimes because of all the crappie.

To those who PM'd me about going ice fishing, i'm happy to share some knowledge and have a good time, but PLEASE, if we get to finally get out there, don't show up without 2 things - ICE CLEATS so you don't bust your head open on the ice, and ICE ESCAPES - 2 handles with spikes that go around your neck or through your sleves, so if you fall in, you can pull yourself out. i hope to never need them, and always go on safe ice, but safe is better than dead...

I've seen this too. Those crappies come thru in droves but when you get them on the ice, they're 5 and 6" fish. Seen a guy the other day stackin those little suckers up around his hole. Fun to catch but a bugger to clean a limit of them. But if you're going to eat them, more power to you.

Just out on Edinboro. Feb 4th 1:45 pm. 2.5-3 inch hard black ice under 6 inches of powdery snow. This was at the big beach/ boat launch. Lots of slush around that area. I dont feel safe on that side yet. was going to check east side by rt 99, but since its a little deeper there and by myself, i didnt check. My guess is that side of lake will be an inch or 2 thicker since it was first to re-freeze over and thats where all the ice chunks and slush got pushed to in that heavy wind on thurs and friday. The entire outflow channel was slush and looked unsafe

Edinboro 2/6/13 6:30 pm. Beach/boat launch.... 1/2 inch crunch layer on top of 3.5 inches of solid ice. I'm not ready to go on it, but should be real soon. Virtually zero snow on it... so should mean thickening every hour
