Tuna, im with you. We heat with wood only. We keep the house between 52 and 62 on average but have some much chillier mornings. Wife and kids went away a few weeks back. I gave up on running the stove while I was at work as it was just a waste. Had one afternoon I came home and it was 33 in the house. I've yet to have a frozen pipe in this house and after these two winters I don't think its happening. Definitely proud to say I didn't burn a drop of fuel this winter and the cold is waning at this point

Great sunshine day. Ice was nice from 4 pm till 7.. Fish were so.. So .. Was cool to see a largemouth follow my jig to where I could see him and refuse. He couldn't on the back drop though :)

At these temps , my local lakes while having 22" ice will be difficult to access in about 2 weeks. Hoping to get in another 3 weeks on laker water , its been pitiful for me this year.

Yup, spring has sprung, anything from here on is just bump in the road

My muscles have shrunk in recent years but I'll try my best :) let me know when tuna. I've heard that all fish in fly zone were lock jawwed this past weekend with only foul hooked fish being played :/ there are other options though ;) let me know. I'll try my best to squeeze some time in. 2 weeks will probably start getting up near 1000... Lower end just iced out. Mouth was watering looking at town pool tail out on sunday

I am thinking of it too.  Very nice day today.  Got the tractor puffing black smoke now, but still a no start. Thing is making me mad.

Nice.  I looked at the 555 FWD 50 horse, 3cyl diesel that had a front loader and 3 ph with quick connect remote.  Drooled and thought about it for quite a while but, for all the more I would be using it, I decided the machine was more than I needed .  Got a 30 horse International FWD 3cyl diesel (it's the one, in the field, stuck in the snow) with 3 ph, no bucket and no remotes.  The engine does have glow plugs and it's equipped with a hand fuel pump to be used in case I miss the flashing red light on the dash and run her out of fuel. (or forget to fill a new fuel filter before installing it (BTDT)).  There is a 130 volt heating element to keep her warm on those chilly nights if, your close to an electrical outlet.  I do use fuel additives to help keep the diesel fuel from gelling during the winter.  Now with all those nice options at my disposal; I still would like to know why, the @&$#*! tractor is so hard to start in the winter.

Oh the joy of it all.  Take care and think spring

It ran rough I parked it changed the filters and Warmed it up with a heater as I thought it was gelled. Now it will not start. I tried everything from cracking the injectors to bleed it to a little ether. It chugs and puffs. It will not start

I have fuel at the injectors when cracking the lines at them. It will huff and puff black smoke, try to start and not catch. The center injector line will pump fuel to the injector when hooked up, but will put nothing out at the pump when  unhooked. It weird,  it just acts like it wants to but won't. Next step is to pull the injectors and see what they look like.

Re:Weather thread 2015/03/10 18:19:51 (permalink)
Clint,  if your getting some fuel to the injectors and your sure the injectors is not the problem, by chance does your tractor kill the engine using a air restrictor plate activated manually or by electric solenoid or, possibly a emergency shut down activated by high temp/low oil sensors.  If that plate doesn't open fully your diesel will first run liker a diesel with bad injectors and eventually not start at all.  Also the fuel filter housing, might there be a manual air bleeder that may be leaking?  Just thinking out loud..... BTDT.

Nope has a fuel shut off solenoid. Have not ruled the injectors out yet either. That is probably the next step to pull them and see what they look like. No other kill switch that I know of. It just puffs black smoke as Long as hit the starter and almost hits. Was running crappy, thought it was iced up, changed the filters and now nothing. Maybe bad fuel???????, but I doubt it.

Re:Weather thread 2015/03/10 21:59:45 (permalink)
The odd thing with your situation is the lack of flow from pump once the injector is tight and nut is cracked right after pump. Could it be a clog up in your return to pump line on that injector? I'm no diesel mechanic but I know my tractor and dozer have a loop to each injector. Do you have manual pump? Can you get prime after pump when manuallly pumped?

A few years back I ran that lcf with an international rough and ended up sitting for whole winter not being able to start. Started in spring time but ran horrible. Ended up being warped nozzles

Absolutely gorgeous today. I talked to the dealer today and he confirmed my suspicions. He said he is not busy so I think I will take it up there, for $300 or so he said he can take the pump off and put it back on. I will be responsible for getting the pump fixed which could run up to $800 or so.  $300 is worth a month of weekends working on it

Rich if your roof is only 4 yrs and you have leak problems you have a faulty installation and I hope who ever installed it will help you out.
I mentioned that I might try a little local fishing but with this sudden thaw and rain on top of it the streams are blown and more rain coming so it does n't look like I'll be out anytime soon.

Re:Weather thread 2015/03/12 09:16:37 (permalink)
Clint I spoke with a diesel mechanic about the symptoms you have with that tractor.  Fuel at the injector, no fuel at the pump, etc. and he is betting the culprit is air in the line and/or pump.  Without a manual hand pump or the use of a electric lift pump to force prime the system, evacuating the fuel lines of air can be frustrating.  The smallest amount of air will restrict the fuel line like a partially closed valve or, a bubble of air trapped in the outlet of the fuel filter will keep the engine from getting enough fuel to run.  Even if you filled the fuel filter before you installed it, air could have (leaking gasket, air not completely purged when filled, etc.) re-formed a bubble.  As for the use of starting fluids, I've watched "yard jockeys" use better than two cans trying to restart their "Yard Ponies" after running out of fuel.   Eventually a mechanic (usually madder than a wet hen) would have to go out into the yard and force prime the fuel system with a hand pump.  Got him on the horn now and asking for suggestions about priming the fuel system if there is no inline manual pump.

I can understand the frustration (BTDT) with getting your tractor running but I'd sure be sorry to see ya have to spend that kind of money if it's only air.

Any Chance there is a sediment bowl inline, that could be a trap also?

Great info btdt. Clint have you tried starting with the first injector cracked? I've had to do that with my dozer when I ran out of fuel. Luckily I have a manual prime pump (that frikkin sucks)... But final procedure was starting it with the first injector cracked. Have to be quick on retightening it once started as it sprays pretty good... Good luck man and hope the burden isn't too bad to your pocket

Re:Weather thread 2015/03/12 10:03:38 (permalink)
Thanks dime............  No arguing about the frustrations of getting a diesel motor to fire, especially in the winter.  Now if it would just warm up and melt the snow that is holding my tractor captive in the field.  I wanna go outside and play(lol)

Here's the suggestion from the mechanic:  Requires two people, one to crank the engine and the other to loosen and retighten the connections at the injectors.  Make sure you have a fully charged battery, crank the motor while bleeding each injector, "DO NOT STOP CRANKING", during this process and, continue to crank the engine until it starts.  Even if it fires a couple of times "keep cranking" til your sure she is running.  May require you to hold the throttle wide open till she fires and closing accordingly once she sounds like she want's to go.

Good luck Clint hope this helps..........................

BTDT sadly I have an in line pump and have tried pretty much all you suggested. I have ran the battery dead 5 or 6 times trying to bleed the system. I have only did it one person though. May give it one more shot. I trust the guy we are taking it to so he said he would troubleshoot before assuming it is the pump
