Nah, all the places except 1 have been zero issue and no people crossing my lines.
Pretty happy with this weather so far. Have ice earlier then last year and getting out frequently. Little snow to deal with . A warm event coming in next 2 days then back to the DEEP freeze :)

Why am I going to fish the salmon river ? Well friends and family are the driving force. NOTHING to complain about as I'm along for the ride.

Stay warm folks, it will be 70 degrees in my shanty :)

Great weather here ice is holding out. The thaw and rain muddied up the water and the bite sucked. Don't know if ice will make it through the next warm spell

Clint what is the ground like?
Is it a skating rink along the river trails?

Any place with that had compacted snow is ice. The ground is still froze up pretty good. We still have snow on the ground especially in the woods. Only been a few spots in the last few weeks, but would say yes be careful. I fell in my back yard tonight..........

Ok now I will say , this weather officially SUCKS !!
Pouring rain is killing my ice and if the salmon river release goes above 750 it will shoot my plans there this weekend to hell.

Heavy rain here too. Flow at 1000+ and 750 over the dam. If it rains tomorrow my day is garage duty and no fishing. We will see. 40 fr the next week so the ice may be done

The northern ice is still very solid in many parts but this rain is depressing.
I shelved some ice gear to make room to grab open water gear.
Clint, if you think the weather continues to rise the river tomorrow, I'd appreciate a heads up in the on site dept. We have a 24 hr cancelation window. I'll fish a grand flow with 750 release but over that release I need to back out and pull my ice gear back off the shelf for this weekend. I'd rather sit on top of hard water for 2 days then a barstool in altmar

Aside from just looking at the flow charts, anyone have a conditions report ?
I'm very close to calling it and getting my ice gear back out

I.been watching the flow slowly rise in the wrong direction since yesterday.
They been pretty tight lipped about updating the flow forecast.
1,100 is a bit much for 2 rookie anglers to handle and warming Temps mean more snowmelt.
We bagged it !! The hotel told us that was fine and their views at water were 1,500 so they agreed. Again , this place was very ok with us cancelling and we rebook ed
For February 3rd weekend.

Looks like I'm jigging for Lakers this weekend

I was just getting ready post and then text you rich.  I was in town and by the transfer station and it looked Like 1500. Never got above 36 here and only drizzled. Would be more afraid of what the 46 would do on Friday. I expect a bump Friday or sat to get ready for the warm temperature next week.  My ice here is done unless I go to 1000islands area or black lake

Climbed Sleeping Beauty with crampons on Monday, lake was unbroken ice. Hope you get some chasers and takers!  I'd like to hang  with you one day out there this winter.  Hope it doesn't get too warm.  Have fun....

I'm not so sure LG has any fishable ice . We been fishing schroon and heading back there .
Had lots chasers, even seen them through the hole but no takers.
Maybe this weekend will be better luck .

Enjoy it out there. Looks like my luck took a turn for the worse looks like I tore my meniscus in my knee I go Monday for a MRI for confirmation. Just hope to be fixed for April 1st the way the weather has been not to jinx it might be fishable like it has been the past couple of openers. Time to do some tying to pass the time and get ready for the seasons cant wait for them to get here.

Dang man , that's a bummer and hope you heal up quick.
I know once I hit 30 things felt different, now over 50 it's a whole new feeling of what different really means .

Still , this weather sucks !!

Ugly, good luck with the MRI.  Depending upon the orthopedic specialist you use may dictate whether or not they perform surgery.

I tore the medial meniscus in my right knee in 1999, the doctor removed 80% of the meniscus.  Three years ago I tore the meniscus in my left knee but the same doctor recommended leaving things alone.  Times have definitely changed regarding treatment.

If you do opt for surgery the recovery time can take months before it feels good.

Re:Weather thread 2017/01/22 07:57:13 (permalink)
We went for lakers on the hard water instead of steelhead in the high cold water.. I think the choice was a good one as the fish were there and semi cooperative, a few landed, a few lost ..  There was fog, drizzle and even some sunshine at times but the temps were in the mid 40's.  Conditions had about 2 " slush on top of 6-8" ice..  There was open water about 100 yards below us with a nasty pressure ridge behind us that I watched people push their sleds across then jump across, that's a little to nuts for me..

If this warm trend continues, it may put a major crimp in jigging lakers throughout the rest of the season.
I was unable to fish the Queen of lakes they call the King last season and I don't see it happening "yet" this year. I cant remember the last time it didn't freeze over in back to back seasons.
We been targeting lake trout the last 2 weekends on the secondary lake which is fine with me but it all puts added fishing pressure on such lake because it's the only game in town.. Still, no worries , it's nothing like salmon river pressure and we had all the space we wanted to roam, but, if things don't change for the better, the bottom end of the lake will start to open up and will force people to congregate to the northern end which still has a good 10-12" ice.
If this is the case, I think I'm looking at 3 more weeks before laker jigging is over.. Lets hope not and the artic air moves in and brings winter back.. Mud season SUCKS !!
If anyone wishes to give this type of fishing a try, look me up and lets go JIGGIN !!!

We got about 4" slushy sleet overnight. What a mess !!
Not sure if I want to deal with these conditions on the ice this weekend.
There was 2" slush on the ice before the storm, now there will be 5" snow on top of slush , gonna be a mess

Not much here except for the higher elevations. Less than an inch and what stuck  melted from the warm ground.

Worst weather of the season so far. A solid 24 hrs plus going of freezing rain,
Plowing was a disaster. Ground is to soft. Forests are crashing.
Local ice is gone and adk ice is getting heavy.

USGS data at Pineville has water flow at 1996. The max ever was 1850 in 1996.
I was going to head up tmrw but not sure now.
thoughts??

I see the flow skyrocketed.
All I'm looking for is a stable flow. Snow is what it is up there to me . It sucks if you are trying to drag stuff across it though.

Kinda related :
IMO , this is going to be the most dangerous conditions on ice so far .
Most everywhere in new York we have had above Temps and new weight added to the hardwater.
While I know places that are completely safe, I also know places the have had good ice have changed dramatically with the recent conditions.
Please, please, use extreme caution if venturing onto a water body this weekend.
I will be fishing hard water and will be checking every step .
While it's been a great ice season so far, it been one in which I fully don't trust where I tread without being sure

This has nothing too do with water flow or ice,but the ground in my area has NO frost in it.That is very unusual for the end of Jan.,I'm happy to report that the drought condition is now gone and the recent rains are soaking into the ground.

I drove past a few of the NYC reservoirs close to home, they were filled to the brim.  What struck me was they had little to no ice, almost all open water.  The high water levels will make for a promising opening day for trout season on the outlet streams.  The bad part is the put and takers will be out in full force due to April 1 falling on a Saturday.
