Re:Weather thread 2016/05/25 06:59:46 (permalink)
It was supposed to rain off and on and Sun. afternoon was supposed to blow 30+ from the N.  Instead it stayed out of the SSE at around 7-8 and the rain amounted to a teacup full if I took every drop off my campsite.  The Hudson made some good memories for you HT, those fish are going out to make some more. We spent the whole winter training for  doing 5 days and 55 miles in a tougher section of the Grand Canyon (the last day we climbed out with the canyon full of swirling clouds and lightening hits up on the rim)  and we came back wishing to move out to Page, AZ. or Kanab, Utah.  Phenomenal landscapes!  I could chase stripers in Lake Powell. Nah, we're staying around here.  There's  little spots with small time windows  that I click off each year that produce nice fish if the conditions are right. Crappies, walleyes, carp, smallmouth, largemouth, rainbows, brookies; all came through this year in some degree. Hard to beat. And situated between the coast and the SR.  The striper fishing is going to be GOOD this year, and maybe, just maybe, we'll get  better runs. I hope you show some pictures of a screen lit up  solid a few miles out from the estuary, HT.  Hopefully, Jack's  2 weeks will make up for last year in spades. It'll be here very shortly.....

Just a heads up ,
The Olcott pro/am tournament on the lake produced a LOT of very large salmon and salmon of all size last weekend.
The east end of the lake is still struggling . Lakers are the main boxes .

The weather was nice so I gave stripers a last shot sat & sun and came up empty.
Time to move on . I did finally get my garden planted:)

Hey,at least we know there are Salmon SOMEWHERE on the big O,I believe it's common for them to be west this time of year and then migrate east as the summer gets here.Is that correct?
Anyone catching browns close in at this time or is that over by now?

The brown catch is considered way down by many this season. Right now the bay ( Mexico) and area is pretty dead .
Yes the western basin is always a good king fishery in the spring but last year the sizes were way down , mostly all skippers . This year the sizes are WAY UP with mature fish and a good mix of 2 year olds . To me this is GREAT news.
Usually the tournaments are a good indication of what's out there

No trips south or west USA this year so see you guys then .
Depending on how the fall goes determines when I pull the boat . It may be October.
Now I'm getting excited to catch some monster lakers soon on the Great Lake adventures:)

Not bad at all. The warm then cold then warm then cold really stifled them this year. This weeks hot weather should get the deer flies out. The lack of rain has kept the mosquito's at bay also

Clint if ya can use a few deer fly's I'll be happy to send some yinz way. lol

Mercy-sake, them things can bite!!!!

This afternoon the flying ants started, not that they intentionally bite, but after gettin hit with deer fly's, the ant's merely landing on me, had me jumping and flailing.

My front yard is 300 feet to the road and the wife says the "zig-zag" and "s" patterns look a little weird in the freshly mowed grass.

A quick up-date on my swimming pool.........  stupid pool!!!

Tight lines and good times to all yinz all.

I think it depends on where you are.  I was in Amboy Center at the end of April and they were swarming me, although they were not biting then.  We were in Pulaski two weeks ago and they  were nearly non-existent, but the same afternoon in Altmar, we got chewed.  Up on the top of the hill, they were bad and biting.  But they do burn off quickly on the Tug.  Not so much further up in the 'daks, I cancelled my trip for next week as it would be suicide to go back in the plains now, they will be so thick.

Well I  entered the 3rd annual Pickerel derby with my new fishing buddy Willy. Man this guy likes to fish. We really got them good today, but did not place. I did not have a leader and lost a few doozies due to bad line. biggest was 2.3# and just over 25. Lunker for the tourney was almost 3#, and I think the 4 fish total was almost 11# was the winner. I only had 8# and will had just over 10#

Nice catch. Clint!  Pickerel are one of my favorites. I grew up fishing for them and still do. I fish  a few ponds in Vt. that have them.  Live bait?

It was a nice night to start the wet wading season on the Hudson. After a day of pouring and finishing concrete it was very nice to stand in cool water feeling the tug of some smallies. Have a great weekend, everyone.

Last I heard leader was 12.5 and there were a few three pounders. What you see is our catch, I also garnered 15 of the biggest fish from the box at the tourney. Nobody keeps them because the are difficult to clean without bones with little return. With that many I just took the good strip from above and the tail.  Still took about two hours.  I have a Grinder and was always going to try patties maybe next time

A few months ago ,my Mom found a picture of me sitting on my Dad's lap, who's sitting on a rock on the side of Bear Pond. I'm reeling in  a bluegill and the back of the old B&W photo says I'm 9 months old. My first memories are of fishing off a boathouse in Lake Hopatcong sometime before I turned 3.

We used to anchor over by the boy scout camp and catch slab size 'gills, remember catching huge crappie and yellow perch up to 18" at Bear Pond. While fishing there one time we saw a bear swimming in that lake, guess the name Bear Pond was appropriate for that water! Some day I'm going to take aride over there just for the memories.

No complaints about the weather. Humidity broke and fresh water flowed .
Pool is a nice 72 degs ..
The Great Lake Adventure for the Daisy begins in 9 days and counting.
I hear the east is dead slow besides lakers but I have some new gear and methods to try out so I'm looking forward.
I can't wait to visit local farm goods , seeing friends ,swimming in the lake , fireworks at sunset and the 8am blast that Dans chicken shack is open :)

All threads from here will be Great Lake Adventures 2016 :)

Ps.= Edit :
Before I depart from this thread, here are a few of the last catches on the Mighty Hudson..
We had a smack down season for sure..

Water looks fine there and after the brutally hot weekend it cooled of nice. Too bad I have not eaten solid food in two days and the plumbing is working overtime.  It's raining here, but man do we need it. I am quite behind on the garden now because of my illness, but it will get done.  Hopefully I can hitch a ide with you RJ. Only did the lake thing once 20 plus years ago......

That's not fishing, that's farming. A whole  herd of cows there, HT. I hope  I can manage one this weekend. Gonna throw big flies in the dark, try to keep the micros off.  Giant tides this weekend on the new moon.

Rained off an on all day, hard at times. Cleared a bit in the late afternoon. Easily over an inch came down. Garden is in for the most part and the grass has started to grow already.

We've gotten a couple of storms like that in the last couple of weeks down here in WCNY, and some streams have hardly reacted.  Better than half the Gage houses in the state are red on the USGS map, indicating low water conditions, we could still us a couple of more inches (tomorrow and Wednesday, as I can fish those days and don't much care for dry flies in the rain!)
