funny, Last 2 & this year I have been camping in snow conditions in early Oct.. Unlike the previous, at least this fall has seemed more like fall and now winter is surly knocking on our door.. I don't mind winter at all.. I don't care much for snow though.. The biggest kicker with me is daylight savings.. I don't do well when it's dark out at 4:30 pm.. Personally I'm fine with it being dark out at 7:30am in the fall, winter.. It's the early evening darkness that casts the blues.. Looks like opening weekend of southern NY hunting is going to be a toss.. Sat looks decent, Sunday looks like a walking day with 28 mph gusts.. My son put a few miles on today with the crossbow , it was windy Hunker down folks :)

Had our Ct opener today- Saw 4 in the first hour and took a skipper doe-by choice. First flathead and young Deer in several years. Been wanting a tender eater and a Liver with no adult pesticide warnings. Two more Rifle tags and then 3 with muzzel. Wouldnt even think of trying for that many Deer.

Congrats r3. Good luck the rest of the season. I would love to hunt my cousins property in Higganum but I don't think his wife would approve. Same to you HT, I hope a big boy wanders by. I have a doe tag for 4F if you need or want it. I plan to hit the watershed property 400 yards from my front door in the hope of putting a tag on doe or buck since I have tags for either. Must say I have had very little activity on my trail cameras set up in the corner of my yard on the food plot I put in the end of the summer.

Ct has some great Deer hunting---if you can get the right properties to hunt. Passed an early doe looking for horns or a skipper- half hour later a doe and two came in. Past several deer have been mature bucks with one fork as an exception- they eat like leather. Might take another skipper if I can. Nice to have venison you don't have to grind up. Hope you find some 21 and all the other forum guys heading out.

Windy, but still mild, holding up the rut here. I got most of my pigs back today 195# and 205# hanging. Still waiting for the smoked stuff. No room in the freezer for venison this year........

Ah , never had a tough burger . We grind about 80% . Back straps hit the grill and anything we cut from the hind is made to chunk for marinating or stew. We don't do chops and steaks , yuck .. There is just so much more you can do with ground meat . My pet peeve on cutting deer is they are so lean and lots of muscle , it's got to have meat .

Heavy rain for the last twenty minutes. I would like to see a little snow on the ground, perhaps one to three inches, to make tracking the brown buggers a bit easier. At least this rain will be a good test for the new roof I had to have installed last week after finding out the original roof had no ice/water shield or felt, just shingles laid upon plywood.

Anyone try having the hind qtr. of the deer in sandwich with steak sauce and onion? Freeze the meat, then thaw slightly so you can thinly slice, pan fry till it turns brown and put in long sandwich bun with fixings.

Got in my spot this AM and missed an 8-saw a doe and skipper while following up my shot by tracking in the wet leaves for a couple of hours and passed. No blood- never thought it was hit -but ya gotta follow up anyhow-- saw him again and he hopped off in a thicket without another shot opportunity. Was sure I flinched when shooting- gotta get over that -has happened in the past. SQUEEEZE and follow through in the scope- Dopy. Watched the one 2 days ago fall in the scope- this time found myself looking over the scope too quick. Dummy Mighta had some FEVER- hope to never loose it either.

I partially thaw the fillet and slice thin with a mandolin slicer. Quick brown in olive oil and blacking seasoning. Let get cold. Mix with a good Italian dressing, like from Teresa's LakeShore Deli. Put in fridge over night. Serve on a crusty roll with some shredded hard cheese.

That's a different twist on it Darby, but I like it hot out of the pan with a good Philly steak sauce.

Congrats Tuna. PA- there is a German Smokehouse deli near home that makes Schickenspeck, pepperoni, kielbasa, sausage and hotdogs with the venison you bring in. However my favorite is having a whole hind quarter smoked. It tastes almost like prosciutto.

A good shooters drill to correct the yips is practice dry firing your weapon with a dime balanced on the end of the barrel. Smooth, easy pull until the trigger breaks. The anticipatory response of the rifles recoil is often the difference between a good or bad shot. R3, I don't know what kind of smoke pole you are using but consider a smaller caliber that doesn't beat you up. A .243 is plenty of gun for deer in the northeast. A .308 or 7MM-08 are also a dream to shoot compared to a .30-06 or larger/magnum loads. Bigger is not necessarily better when choosing a rifle.

Using a Ruger #1 in 06. with a decent 4x9 scope. It isn't the kick or the gun- its my not keeping with proper procedures all the time. It never happens on the range. Love single shot guns. Jerking the trigger and looking up too quick on occasion-especially in quick shooting scenarios. Kinda like looking up too quick and trying to hit hard when playing golf and not just watching the club hit ball and following through. Keep telling myself to just keep looking through the scope till impact and SQUEEEZE. Picked up this trait a couple of years ago and fall back on it occasionally. The one I took Wed. was a hard shot through trees and over some large rocks requiring lots of concentration and all went perfectly- even saw it drop while still in the scope. Friday YANK and PEEK==dummy. Going tomorrow and likely he will be back- has the area all torn up and is there each morning.

Well today has been sun and clouds with an ice pellet or sprinkle every now and then. Had to do some patching on my roof to get it through the winter, especially where the water comes off the dormers. It just wore the shingles out, the asphalt is flaking off the felt and they are curling. I am not convinced they are holding up as good as they should though , but pictures to the manufacturer and the same excuses. Winter climate, most of the water from the roof going down a few spots, faulty installation ect ect. A few replaced and a half a can of roofing tar and I have done what I can. It should get me through, but it ain't pretty. New roof next year anyway. Standing seam metal with a complete tear off, then no worries.

Today was a bust in the woods . High winds, warmer temps and sunshine kept the deer staying low. We have a lack of hunters so if they don't feel comfortable moving and feeding then they just lye low which is what they did today When I walked around I jumped some that were bedded , when I sat , I seen none . Hoping to get back out on a camping trip Dec-5 & 6

Have not checked the low temp. for last night but, the white area in the woods, use to be water. Now that we have had snow and temp.s low enough, in one night to freeze over the ponds, I think it fair enough to call for.................... 4 months of "Indian Summer"! Happy Thanksgiving to all and, good luck to those (me included) still seeking the ever elusive White-Tailed Deer and/or Bear BTDT said that......... Update: 17.5` F. in my little piece of Penn's Woods last night.
