I fished the Oswego River a day or two after Hugo rolled through. Tough fishing at those levels but I did manage to catch a beautiful coho just above the tackle shop that was on Leto Island. Good memories.

1989 I'm thinkin. Didn't get any rain from the the recent cold front but, the weather dude says another one comin in tonight and says 90% chance of rain for my piece of the "PA. Wilds" this evening through tomorrow. Sure hope it last so, the water temps in the area streams, rivers and, lakes drops and the fishes come back to the shallows. Clint, do ya ever have problems from "Powdery Mildew" wiping out any of your squash and/or pumpkins? I have a heck of a time with that stuff even when I use copper based mildew sprays! Stupid mildew anyway!

Hugo was September 1989. I flew back from Florida with the wife and two infants the night it hit the coast. Waited on the runway in Ft. Lauderdale for three hours before we took off for LaGuardia. The storm plus a big jet skidding into the drink the day before at LaGuardia had things all fouled up.

BTDT yes I have that issue but it is never bad enough to hurt production. I did have an issue with bloom rot, but only bad on one kind of squash. Climbing trombone type it was my first year planting it. Squash forms gets about six inches and rots. Sprayed with calcium last week because there were still new fruit

Clint, I hear ya on the calcium, I laced the garden with gypsum this year and gonna add a bunch more this fall. First year I've had a good tomato crop since the heavy blight a few years back. Sweet peppers haven't been hit with "black spot" and rotting on the plant like they did last year. Curious to know if you use any ground cover under your squash plants like, straw or plastic? I'm using plastic and I'm wondering if no ground contact by the vine may be causing the plants to weaken and thereby, become more susceptible to disease? Dime, I stay away from Zucchini ever since the year I had so much I ate it baked, fried, deep fried, grilled, stuffed, in bread, in cookies and, I think we even tried making ice cream with the stuff. As for the cucumbers, we had pretty good production for about a week and then the plants seemed to say... see ya! Re-seeded and it looks like, if we get some rain, I may get another round before Jack Frost comes to town.

Same here btdt with our cucumbers. Our tomatoes have done fantastic the past 3 years in a row but this year is best out of last 3 for sure. I stay sway from the plastic myself, but otherwise I have no factual input

Calcium was the key for my tomato issues awhile back . I dosed them with bone meal mixed into liquified and actual calcium pills diluted in a water bottle stuck in the soil .
Gypsum huh ? I have raw gyp , lime , & iron where I work . Farmers take some our waste products but never seen them take gyp .. Never tired much additives to my garded besides the usual manure , mushroom compost ( which is loaded with grass , yuck ) and the calcium cure . Quite honestly there is no cure for a lazy gardener though ,, lol mine went to pot early with weeds and I went to the farm stands often . Next year we are scrapping the garden and opening up more lawn , play area space , in turn means more mowing :(

Gypsum (calcium carbonate) is good for most clay soils. I use to add it as a flocculant (soil binder) to make good lawns and aid in quick root development. It doesn't change the PH of soils, being neutral itself, just helps it take fine sediment and form it into small balls called flocs by chemists. The small balls of soil don't cake into hard pack so readily, like clay tends to do. Plants in clay soils tend to suffer from "flower pot effect" - the tenedency of the roots to be confined due to soil compaction- as if they were planted in a flower pot. Don't mind me, I actually was a professional gardener before I decided to nail dead plants together.

Absolutely hit the nail on the head fichy. Gypsum will break down clay soil as well as add calcium without having a drastic effect on the PH like lime does. Gypsum is also good for breaking high salts down and providing sulphur such as with dog pee on lawn areas. I threw the stuff on my lawn just around the house and it made a big difference with the grass. For those who do not like mowing grass..... don't do it.

Wow, impressive stuff here!!! I turned up a little bit of clay when I tilled my corn plot. The sod was over 8" thick in most spots. The soil was great though. The clay ranges from 12-18 inches Down. Thanks for the advice with the gypsum as I will use if I hit higher clay amounts in future plots. I'm probably gonna do oats in place of my corn next year and rotate the corn somewhere else.

BTDT I have both plastic under some and ground under others. The ones with plastic seem to better with the mold and they grow and produce better. Andy the cukes were funny this year for everyone not a great crop. First year I had to buy for pickles. Yes gypsum is great for bloom rot too. Andy if you have a trailer I can bring my tractor up to plow and disc if you want

The waves were 4-5 footers yesterday morning then laid down to 1-2's in afternoon so we took a shot and found one :) fish was super dark . There were very few boats out but in 60-80 fow off the SR the fish were stacked like cord wood ;) The weather has certainly changed for sure and yes it's salmon season. I would expect a good push of fish into the river very soon if not today. It's great having a designated driver and we hit the Altmar hotel pretty hard last night. Packing up the Daisy Mae now and going to load her up and bring her home . No fishing today and it was great to finally catch a salmon on my last trip out . So looking foward to next season already .. Now you'll all have to listen to me whine about the ice , lol It's been a great ride and we sure did go to hell in a bucket !!! Peace & Tuna

So the Mae is in the driveway . We had our first mechanical issue and thankfully it happened right near the launch . Something broke in the outdrive . Either a shifting cable or the outdrive gear itself , have to figure that out later but we got lucky being able to get it on the trailer. Now I left low 60 deg weather and here the wife has the A/C running . It's quite warm , sunny and a bit humid . Leaving on a Jet plane next week then see some of you fellas in salmon country . I will be up thurs 10-1 by first light and stay a couple days .Lets hope they start doing their thing .

For anyone worry about water levels or temps need not worry anymore. The weekends rain has north branch of salmon river spiked at 600 cfs. Run off and main branch are definitely contributing somewhat equal or more. Good cold ground soaking rain. Even with warmer temps in the forecast again, I think we're all good.

Well its turning in to fall with a quick snap of the finger. Cold down pours... Down to 50 tonight... 40's are common in upcoming over night lows. This coming week will probably be the best of the season (for salmon) (in my opinion) .. Water temps never reached 70... I landed a fish today that I chased near 150 yards that half died on the walk back up as I didn't have stringer on me. I revived fish when I got back to spot and roped it behind an oxygen pocket off bank and it stayed alive and thrashing when I left with it 2 hours later... So no worries of warm water and mortality. Heard the DEC did a clean sweep up above town with tickets and summons... Keep it up!!! Its salmon season!!!
