Binghamton released its annual averages to date for this summer. I don't do sticky links... But do recall it saying Syracuse at over 17" of rain in which I believe 13" of it were in month of June making this past June the wettest month on record and this summer being in the top 5 rankings since records. Temps have actually been average to below average. Eastern lake areas and tug hill areas definitely got more rain than cuse area... The river Is running at 335 and all dam releases have gone as scheduled. Fish are running the river daily. Leaves are turning and weather is coming. I'd say we're right on track... Despite the overly dry periods we've had.

Brutally hot today with another scorcher on tap for tomorrow.  Predicting a chance a T-storms then back to cooler weather on Thursday (80's).  We definitely could use a big blow from a hurricane or tropical depression. Understory trees have turned yellow and the grass is crunchy dry other than some areas of my leach field.

Strange, very strange..  I haven't (to lazy) to look up averages .. It's been a brutal summer here.. Don't think I have ever used the A/C this much in my life.. It's taking a toll on my sinus..
The spring started out cold and wet in june.. We were out in snow squals on the mighty Hudson the last week in April and then a heat wave in the second week in May.. when we went to the Ausable river the first week in June it was back to 25 deg at night up there and rain in the day.. From July on out everytime we went to Mexico , we were swimming in the lake and only got rained on twice, all summer..
Our streams are a trickle, our brooks are just spring holes and very light at that, our ponds are milfoil and pulled back from shore a good distance..
P.S (edit)
Our corn fields are all cut down already.. Think that's the earliest I have ever seen..
Sure don't seem normal here..

Tuna I conclude more and more that averages are commonly just a combination of opposite extremes which is what this time period has shown. Bone chilling winter with lots of snow early... Bone chilling late winter with little snow... Bone dry april- may, soaking wet June til early july...with late July having isolated pounder storms here and there... Dry august (typical)... Hopefully rain does come in more excess so river can at least maintain minimal flow requirement of 335.… something tells me it will. And sooner than later 40 someye degree nights will be here, and if extreme keeps it's theme up we'll either be warm and dry come November or cold wet and icey... Or maybe somewhere in the middle...the meteorologists can assure us of whats to come after its happened...lol!!!

On a side note, my backyard pond acquired bass this past season in which we just found out yesterday as my son caught 5 of them. And uglyfish they were like you had explained: warm to the touch. All I can think is eggs got washed or fingerlings navigated through June - early Julys record breaking rainfalls. Its amazing how weather and nature works :)

Re:Weather thread 2015/09/09 06:58:45 (permalink)
I leave early tomorrow for 4 days camping in the 'daks, so rain is a sure thing!  I am glad we picked the coming weekend not last one.  As hot as it was, the bite was probably for an hour at dawn and an hour at dusk.  Once the tarps are up, I can live with the rain, and if it is cloudy, we can fish all day ( just have to remember to stop to eat!).  Hoppers are everywhere around here in big numbers, if it is the same in the meadows of the Plains, a greased muddler should do the trick, and the big fall caddis should be around as well.  It is a strange thing tying a Lafontaine deep pupa on an 8 hook, bright orange body with brown head, probably ought to move them to the steelhead box when the trip is over.  And if it rains enough, I have a few "secret" beaver ponds that I have not hiked into in a long time, and the feeder streams should be worth the time to walk them.

The pupae work well! I noticed some flitting about in the hemlocks on the SR, and had a few in the box as generics. Tried it out and it's now a staple. Mine are of the copper beadhead/ wood duck tail, legs, antennae/orange antron-rust brown possum dubbing mix, but imagine G.L.'s would work as well. Have a great trip, and I hope you get the cloudy. cooler, great fishing weather. Give us a report and take some pics, please?

North branch salmon usgs has 13 cfs currently... North sandy creek has 7,5 cfs currently. What an odd year to have such low head water flows yet more water in reservoir than the previous few years. Cool nights coming up will drastically drop water temps. Spring creeks in and around the river are not dry

Its stalled over tug hill and pounding right now... Pink center surrounded by red. This is a flash soaker. I don't think water is going to go below 350 for a while. We should be good :) there's some wide spread storms behind it to the west as well.

Crazy crazy weather for my area. big rain north and south and bone dry for my piece of Penn's Woods.

Counties south of I-80 posting flash flood warnings and the 'Burgh' appears to be getting a good soaking..

Oh well........ maybe next time.

Well the temps came down last night so the 90s are gone for a few days- THANKS.
The predicted rain came but only enough to make things wet-anthills on my sidewalk joints are still standing tall after the 'rain'.
They say 'perhaps' a thunderstorm tonight- anything is appreciated in this drought.
About 3 inches since June- and most of that in early July- leaves us many inches short.
Just for a comparison -Think someone said Syracuse has had about 20 in the same time.
Schizamm= a light drizzle has just erupted-GREAT

Got a brief spurt last night around 6:00pm. Today is overcast and a bit cooler but without the A/C working in my machine its HOT !! Area radar is just showing scattered showers here and there. Will check my rain bucket tomorrow when I get to the boat and see what's happened there since last sat

By the looks of north branch flow gauge yesterdays storm did not impact the northern end of reservoir. May have very well hit the basin of the main upper branch though.

Lol, same here . To little to late though . What it's purpose for me ( not putting wildlife in the equation ) from here on is meaningless now . Grass is toast and don't wish it to grow anymore anyway, garden is toast , pretty much non existent fishing locally and rain now only means a muddy fall around my yard . Sorry , I'm bummed about the dry summer , bring on winter .. Lol

It's funny. Although it has been very dry the past few months my lawn and garden is in excellent shape. Still have to mow once or twice a week and the corn is the best I have had in years. Just picked 3 dozen ears to give away at work tomorrow. Just pick a dozen each of butternut and spaghetti squash and there are still more to pick. They will stay in the basement for months and be eaten this winter.

Yea it's a tale of 2 cities (not that I ever read the book) between the zones of NY.. North and west are always 2-3 weeks and miles away from below the blue line and east weather..
I remember Hugo, it was massive here , severe flooding and we had a trip planned for Oswego county.. Well we went, we fished higher water but awesome fishing.. Never would have happened in this county that weekend..
Then there was this massive Ice storm up there one March.. We had my bosses cabin in Henderson and his drift boat in Pulaski..  No issues here at home but it completely shut power down for a week while we were there along the eastern lake.. We fished :)
Strange stuff happens in the strangest of places if you look at it right :)
Glad things are doing well Clint

Over an inch of nice slow steady drizzle - perhaps another lawn will arrive this year after all-haven't mowed the brown stuff in a month.
